Six years ago, I walked into a local animal shelter on a cold, rainy day. Although my house was already full of cats and dogs, I still couldn?t resist an occasional visit to the shelter. This time as I was walking down the row of pens full of barking dogs I noticed a small boy looking into one of them.

He had a malnourished(营养不良的) looking body and a bony face with a big nose sticking out of the middle of it. He was looking at a small, golden dog. Its bony ribs were showing and its thin tail was folded between its legs. It wasn?t begging for attention like the other puppies but was hiding in the corner instead. The boy looked up at me with sad eyes and asked what was wrong with it. “It was probably abused and abandoned”, I said. “That is why it is so scared.”

The boy immediately turned to an older lady and said, “Grandma, I want this one.” The old woman smiled and walked to the front desk to fill out the adoption forms. I followed and asked about the boy. I found out that he?d had a rough start in life too. She had just gotten custody(监护权) of him after the state had taken him from his parents. She had hoped getting a dog would make it easier on him. I looked back at him, holding his scared puppy, and said a prayer for them both.

It was yesterday. I was driving down the road enjoying a gloriously sunny , spring day. Then in a green front yard I saw the boy. His teenage body was tall and strong. His nose no longer seemed big but fit well into his smiling face. He was throwing a ball to a healthy, happy dog with shining golden hair. His little act of love and kindness had indeed gone a long way. It had saved a dog?s life , healed his own heart, and given this middle-aged man fresh hope

24. The author entered the animal shelter because .

A. pencils

B. holes

C. cages

27. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

B. The boy?s nose has become smaller than before.

C. The author enjoys watching people playing with dogs.

D. The author is a kind-hearted old man.

Cultural TV programs make a comeback

Cultural TV programs have made a comeback this year. TV shows such as Readers and National Treasure rekindled people?s interest in traditional culture and enhanced their knowledge.

China Central Television …s Readers, for example, sparked fresh enthusiasm for Chinese literature. The weekly show, aired from February to May, invited people from all walks of life—mostly celebrities—to read aloud pieces of classical poems , essays and books they like or wrote.

V oice—recording booths were also set up across the country for recording and broadcast use. The booths attracted throngs of ordinary people who hoped to make appearances on the country?s largest state TV network.

Life slows down

This year also marked the success of programs that seek slower- paced lifestyles such as Back to Field, The Chinese Restaurant, and Dear, Inn.

The Chinese Restaurant stars famous actresses, actors and a TV hostess. They run a Chinese restaurant on the Thai island of Koh Chang to bring Chinese delicacies to foreign people and to help Chinese travelers experience hometown tastes. The ultimate goal of the show is to help spread China?s culture to people overseas. In addition to well-known Chinese dishes, the beautiful seashore , the sound of waves and lives on the island also brought refreshing experiences to audiences.

Four years after its first season was produced and aired on Hunan Satellite TV, its popularity has stayed steady. The term“underemployment”has three related meanings. In one sense, it refers to a situation in which someone with excellent job qualifications(资格) is working in a position that requires less qualifications, as for instance in the case of a lawyer driving a school bus. In the second sense, it means working part-time when one would prefer to be working full-time. In the third sense, it is a form of over-staffing(人浮于事) in which employees are not being fully made use of.

All forms of underemployment have effect on the economy and the health of the business community. Long- term underemployment can also cover up the truth behind the employment situations. When nations collect employment statistics, they usually come up with a base number of “unemployed”individuals, using that number to judge the health of the job market. This number does not include part-time workers looking for full- time jobs, as they are considered employed, and it also doesn?t reflect workers who are underpaid, considering their qualifications.

In the first sense, underemployment is a common problem in many of the developed world. Many people with college degrees are working in low-level or service industry jobs because the job market is full.

The issue of part-time employment is also very serious. Some people are forced into part-time jobs, while others find themselves taking a part-time job because nothing else is available, even though they really need to work full-time. This problem is especially common in areas with seasonal employment, where employers find it cheaper to maintain and lay off part- time staffs, rather than keeping a full staff at all times.

In the sense of shortage of workers, underemployment appears in a variety of situations. Some companies maintain a full staff to be prepared for seasonal work, or to keep well- trained, qualified workers so that they will be available when needed. Labor laws and union pressures may also prevent a company from cutting down on staff or working hours, leading to a situation in which people report to work , but have nothing to do.

31. The purpose of the passage is .

A. to show underemployment is becoming more serious today

B. to explain the meaning of “underemployment”

C. to imply women are laid off more than men

D. to tell the present economic situations

32. According to the text, underemployment means .

A. the same meaning as the word—unemployed

B. people who do manual work for wages

C. qualified workers get a low salary

D. employees are not fully made use of.

33. When it comes to unemployment statistics, .

A. it implies the people who are jobless

B. the underpaid workers are included

C. the part-time employees are included

D. it shows the employment situation of a country

34. Which of the following is NOT TRUE to the 4th and 5th paragraph?

A. People with college degrees sometimes take a part-time job.

B. Underemployment only occurs in advanced countries.

C. Part-time staffs seem to benefit from firms less.

D. Companies need full-time staffs indeed.

35. Some companies maintain a full staff .

A. to compete with others in the future

B. to disobey labor laws and union pressures

C. to get the skilled workers paid

D. to make preparations for seasonal work

Time is something that we all are taking for granted these days. We spend hours watching TV or playing mobile games, thinking that this is just normal. I find this a waste of time. 36 Every second is valuable and we should rethink of ways of spending our time.

Firstly, spend time in doing things that really matter. Spend time with your family and friends. Enjoy a nice hot meal and eat it slowly. Give yourself time to play and spend enough time in sleeping. 37 But the truth is the little things matter most in life.

Secondly, you have to know what is done cannot be undone. Do not allow your mind to stay in the past. Every day is a new adventure. 38 It may not be an opportunity like an immediate get-rich chance, but it may be an opportunity for new experiences.

39 If you have only one chance to do something for someone, why not do it to the best of your ability? It should not matter whether you are being rewarded or not. You will take pride in your work because you?ve done your best.

Trust me, quality efforts will be rewarded in time.

Lastly, every moment you spend in doing things is the time taken from your life. Don?t waste your time away working day and night just for money. 40 The value of your time is measured by how you spend it and whom you choose to spend it with.

A. You will get whatever you want from working.

B. Spend more time on the important tasks instead of time-wasters.

C. Do your best in every task as if the world will end tomorrow

D. That is not your life?s worth.

E. It is hours of our lives that we can never get back.

F. Little things like this may seem meaningless.

G. You have to keep your eyes and ears open to the new opportunity.

When I was ten, I was once asked to deliver a speech titled“A Challenge in My Life”. To talk before the whole class! Just imagine how 61 (terrible) shy I was the moment I thought of that with so many eyes fixed upon me. I had no other 62 (choose), though. First I was to draft the speech and that was just a piece of cake for me, because I was a good writer—something to pride myself in. But the hard part 63 (lie) in my oral presentation; to read from the paper was not allowed; I had to give the speech 64 my memory and in front of such 65 big audience! A real trial began when I stood on the platform with my legs 66 (shake) and my mind blank. How much time had passed by?I didn?t know. Artists and designers both create visual works using a/an 1 knowledge background, but their reasons for doing so are 2 different. Some designers consider themselves artists, but few artists consider themselves 3 . So what exactly is the difference between art and design? Perhaps the most fundamental difference that we can all agree on is their 4 . Typically, the process of creating a work of art starts with nothing, a blank sheet of paper. A 5 of art is born from a view or value that the artist holds within himself or herself. They create the art to share that feeling with others, to 6 the viewers to relate to it, learn from it or be 7 by it. The most renowned and successful art today is something that establishes the strongest 8 connection between the artist and their 9 . By contrast, when a designer sets out to 10 a new piece, they almost always have a 11 starting point, whether a message, an image, an idea or an action. The designer’s job isn’t to invent something 12 , but to communicate something that already exists, for a purpose.
