Thanks our opposite fellow debater. But we can’t agree with your opinion. We insist that money can buy happiness. To set the framework for our opinion, we believe it is necessary to state happiness. Our definition of happiness is the satisfaction of material and spirit.

We’d like to demonstrate our standpoint from two aspects, people who are struggling to afford themselves and people who are financially stable.

For people who are too poor to feed themselves, food is essential to keep them alive. As money can buy food, food will ease their pain of starving, so, for them, food will provide happiness. Therefore, money can bring happiness to them.

For people who are too poor to get the medical treatment for their illness, the most important point for their happiness is to be alive without pain. Imagine if a person has serious illness and unfortunately the person cannot afford the medical bills, he or she can only wait for death. I want to ask the opposite debaters, will the person feel happy? What if th is person’s relatives or friends could do nothing about it, will they feel happy?

For people who are too poor to have a place to live, a permanent home can keep out wind and rain, preventing them from cold. What’s more, a roof over head can bring the sense of security, which is a kind of happiness. To have such a place, no matter purchase or building by themselves, people need money.

Consequently, for those who are struggling to afford themselves, money can buy happiness.

For the people who are not struggling at the poverty line, most of their happiness can be derived from spiritual level.

First, people can have happiness by doing their hobbies. We think money is the foundation of the overwhelming majority of people's hobbies. Most of our hobbies need material basis, and we need money to get them. For examples, music lovers need money to buy their musical instruments at first to create fabulous song. Tennis enthusiasts must use their money to get rackets and tennis balls. They even need the money to book the playground.

Second, people can get education with their money. The process of exploring the unknown field will bring the satisfaction of spiritual level. For example, many older adults use their money to attend the university of the aged in order to learn the new skills, such as how to use the computer and Internet. Keeping pace with the time makes them get happiness.

What's more, people can use their money to help others to fulfill their own spiritual happiness. Some people in our world are straitened for money. They are suffering from starving, illness and coldness. If we give our money to them, which is what they needed right away, they can live a better life. Helping others can bring happiness to rich people because they can realize their self-actualization. That's the reason why many celebrities who are the outstanding people in their career devote themselves in philanthropy.

To draw a conclusion, whether people in the state of struggling to afford themselves or in the state of financially stable, money can buy happiness.

Thanks our opposite debaters, according to your speech, here comes our rebuttals.

Firstly, our debate is “can money buy happiness” instead of “the more money you have, the happier you will be”, in the case of a certain economic basis, money is not the key of happiness. Accordingly, your speech misses the point. And opposite first debater hasn’t make a definition of happiness, so we don’t know the criterion of happiness level in the data you gave. There are many factors of happiness, when the sense of happiness make by money cannot offset the difficult that other factors brought, people will not be happy certainly.

Secondly, opposite second debater gave the example of the rich man will be confused by many questions but I want to say, making blind and disorderly conjectures that resulted in money is his own problem rather than money. And in the end of your first point, you said “money is necessary for a happy life, it cannot buy happiness”, you have admitted the money is the significance condition of happiness, so we are confused by your point.

Thirdly, opposite second debater said money drove people to cheat and steal, I want to ask you, if money cannot buy happiness, why people try their best to pursue wealth? Everyone has the instinct of pursue happiness, the point you gave just shows that money can bring them the sense of happiness, otherwise they will not pursue money.
