Chapter One Introduction
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.1 General Description of the Research
Jennie Gerhardt is one of the famous novels written by Theodore Dreiser. It is a classic in American realism literature. Theodore Dreiser is an American novelist born in Indiana State. He received early education in public schools and later he went to study in Indiana University. Most of his life was devoted to his journalist career, and he had an extensive understanding of the society. This also accumulated affluent materials for his literature creation. Jennie’s tragedy is the main trail of Jennie Gerhardt. Theodore Dreiser describes the worsening unemployment and crimes of capitalism in the novel. The novel depicts extravagant and dissolute life of the bourgeois. This novel movingly describes the true living conditions of the ordinary people who are living in the bottom of American society. It rips out the hypocrisy of the bourgeois and creates a vivid image of Jennie Gerhardt, a common working woman who is industrious, pure, frank and has the spirit of self-sacrifice. It is considered to be an important and meaningful novel in American realism literature.
Eleven Chinese versions of the novel have been found. Among these versions, there are four versions which are extremely famous. Four versions were translated in different periods. Respectively, Zhu Baoguang, his version A Small Biography of Jennie Gerhardt（《珍妮小传》）was published in 1949. It appeared in the founding period of the PRC. This version is followed by Fu Donghua’s which was finished in 1959, ten years after the founding of the country. Pan Qingling published his version in 1987. This version appeared after the reform and opening up. The fourth one is the version translated by Fan Wenmei. It was published in 2003. This period belongs to the new century. This thesis chooses these four famous versions and it will explain the features of each version in chapter four in detail. Reason exploration about the different features will be discussed in detail in chapter five.
