Spending time online is normal behavior for teenagers. But too much Internet use by teens -- or too little, for that matter -- might be related to depression, a new study finds.

The findings, reported in the journal of Pediatrics, do not mean that the Internet is to blame. For one, teens in the study who spent no time online were also at increased risk of depression symptoms.

Instead, the researchers say that both heavy Internet use, and non-use, could serve as signals that a teenager is having a hard time.

For the study, Dr. Pierre-Andre Michaud and colleagues at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, surveyed 7,200 individuals ages 16 to 20 about their Internet use.

Those who were online more than two hours per day were considered "heavy" Internet users, while those online anywhere from several times per week to two hours per day were considered "regular" users.

The teenagers also answered a number of health-related questions, including some standard questions about "depressive tendencies" that gauge how often a person feels sad or hopeless. Compared with regular Internet users, the study found, kids who were heavy users or non-users were more likely to be depressed or very depressed.

Among male teens, heavy users and non-users were both around one-third more likely to have a high depression score, compared to "regular" users. Among girls, heavy Internet users had an 86 percent greater chance of depression, while non-users had a 46 percent greater likelihood compared to regular users.

That was with factors like family income and any chronic health problems taken into account. However, the average depression scores among non-users, regular users and heavy users alike were all toward the lower end -- between 1 and 2 on a scale of 1 to 4, with 1 being "not depressed at all."

Since teenagers typically go online to connect with friends, the researchers speculate that those who are never online may be more socially isolated.

English is a language particularly rich in idioms, which usually don?t obey logical and grammatical rules. Without idioms English would lose much of its variety and humor both in speech and writing.

In the old days the written language (novel, poems, plays and the Bible)was the source on which idioms were based. This was the case up until WWII. After the war new mediums(新闻媒

介)had appeared in English-speaking society, there was a channel for the American way of life and the popular culture of the US TV, movies and nowadays the interactive(相互作用的) medium have changed the English language more to the American English direction.

How then does American English differ from British English in the use of idioms? There are no radical(根本的) differences in real use. The main differences are in the situations where idiomatic expressions are used. There have been many studies recently on this subject. American English adopts and creates new idioms at a much faster rater compared to British English. Also the idioms of American English origin seem to spread faster and further. After it has first been established in the US, an American idiom may soon be found in other variants(异体) and dialects of English. Nowadays new British idioms seem to stay on the British Isles and are rarely encountered in the US. British idioms are in fact more familiar to other Europeans or to the people of the British Commonwealth than to Americans, even though the language is same. The future of idiomatic expressions in the English language seems certain. They are more and more based on American English. This development will continue through new mediums like the Internet and interactive mediums. It is hard to say what this will do to idioms and what kind of new idioms are created. This will be an interesting development to follow, and by no means does it lessen the humor, variety and color of English language.

1. According to the passage, we can infer that__________.

A. be used all over the world

B. be laughed at by British people

C. be found to be used in England also

4. The future of idiomatic expressions in the English language may mainly reply on__________

A. American English

B. British English

C. The old idioms

D. Language?s humor and variety

5. Which one is the best title for the passage?

I am here to announce my retirement from the game of basketball. It won't be another announcement to baseball or anything to that nature.

Mentally, I'm exhausted. I don't feel I have a challenge. Physically, I feel great. The last time in 1993 I had other agendas(议题). I felt that I wanted to play baseball and I felt that at my age, it was a good opportunity and time to do it. And with the death of my father, and I was basically trying to deal with that.

Actually I talked to Jerry last year once the season ended and I told Jerry at that time, mentally,

I was a little exhausted. I didn't know if I would play next year. I wanted to put him on awareness so that he could possibly prepare going into next season. And Jerry, once we had our conversation, wanted me to take time as I did in 93 to make sure that it was the right decision because it was going to be the final decision.

I retired the first time when Phil Jackson was the coach. And I think that even with Phil being the coach I would have had a tough time, mentally finding the challenge for myself. Although he can somehow present challenges for me. I don't know if he could have presented the challenge for me to continue on to this season." Even though middle way of this season I wanted to continue to play a couple more years, but at the end of this season I was mentally drained and tired. So I can't say that he would have restored that.

I will support the Chicago Bulls. I think the game itself is a lot bigger than Michael Jordan. I've been given an opportunity by people before me, to name a few, Kareem Abdul Jabber, Doctor J, Upjohn Baylor, Jerry West. These guys played the game way before Michael Jordan was born and Michael Jordan came on the heels of all that activity. Mr Stern and what he's done for the league, gave me an opportunity to play the game of basketball. I played it to the best I could play it, I tried to enhance the game itself. I've tried to be the best basketball player that I could be.

Plants have family values, too; it seems, with new research suggesting they can recognize close relatives in order to work together.

An ability to tell family from strangers is well known in animals, allowing them to cooperate and share resources, but plants may possess similar social skills, scientists believe.

Susan Dudley and Amanda File of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, report they have proved for the first time that plants can recognize their kin.

This suggests that plants, though lacking recognition and memory, are able to compound

social interactions.

“Plants have this kind of hidden but complicated(复杂的) social life,” Dudley said.

The study found plants from the same species of beach-dwelling wildflower grew aggressively(侵略地) alongside unrelated neighbors but were less competitive when they shared soil with their families.

Sea rocket, a North American species, showed stronger and healthier root growth when planted in pots with strangers than when raised with relatives from the same maternal(母系的) family, the study found.

This is an example of kin selection(亲缘选择), a behavior common in animals in which closely related individuals take a group approach to succeeding in their environment, the researchers said.

Kin selection also applies to competition, because if family members compete less with each other, the group will do better overall. “Everywhere you look, plants are growing right up next to other plants,” Dudley said,“ Usually it?s a case of each plant for itself. But sometimes th ose plants are related, and there are benefits to not wasting resources on being competitive, and there is not really a cost to not being competitive as long as your neighbor is also not being competitive.”

Learning and memory appear to be important fo r kin recognition in animals, but this isn?t a choice for plants, she noted.

Some researchers speculate(猜测) that plants communicate through their roots, identifying themselves using tiny chemical signatures specific to each plant?s family.

1. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. Plants Can Recognize and Communicate with Relatives

B. Kin selection is Important for Plants.

C. Animals Can Recognize and Memorize Their Relatives.

D. Competition Asks Plants to Recognize Their Relatives.

For questions 1~7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C, and D, and then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. For questions S1-S3, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1. One of the best parts of university life is living away from home. You get freedom and the chance to meet new people. You are living away from home, planning your own routine and even cooking your own meals——and that means looking after your own money. At university, it’s all about the cash. Fees, student loans, rent, bills, overdraft (银行透支款)——you name it, you might have to pay for it. An important aspect of being at university is managing your own time. It’s up to you to decide when you’ll study, when you’ll go shopping and when you’ll have a night out. Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? Of course, it is a good idea to organize your time with a weekly or monthly schedule. Remember, you can be as flexible with your time as you like, but you’ll always need to make sure you get out of bed for lectures, meet essay and project deadlines, and schedule in plenty of revision days before exams. After a hard day’s study, going out and having fun is what student life is all about. You can get involved in voluntary work and student representation activities and you could contribute and learn new skills with student magazine and r adio station. It’s the perfect way to make friends and add a bit of sparkle to you CV(个人简历). University life is about learning. You’ll be expected to go to all your lectures and classes. Most courses are assessed through exams, essays, practical work an d projects. You’ll have anything from one to five hours of lectures, in a day. But on top of that, you are expected to do a number of hours of self-study. Every student has a personal tutor to help with any problems you might have or you can speak to your lecturers and other tutors if you have questions. If you plan you time and your workload, you’ll have plenty of free time to enjoy student life at university. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheetwith a single line through the center. Passage One Science is not a set of unquestionable results but a way of understanding the world around us. Its real work is slow. The scientific method , as many of us learned in school, is a gradual process that begins with a purpose or problem or question to be answered. It includes a list of materials, a procedure to follow, a set of observations to make and, finally, conclusions to reach. In medicine, when a new drug is proposed that might cure or control a disease, it is first tested on a large random group of people, and their reactions are then compared with those of another random group not given the drug. All reactions in both groups are carefully recorded and compared, and the drug is evaluated. All of this takes time and patience. It’s the result of course, that makes the best news—not the years of quiet work that characterize the bulk of scientific inquiry. After an experiment is concluded or an observation is made, the result continues to be examined critically. When it is submitted for publication, it goes to a group of the scientist’s colleagues, w ho review the work. Einstein was right when he said: “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right, a single experiment can at any time prove me wrong.”
