How to Use a Modern Public Library

Has it been a while since your last visit to a public library? If so, you may be surprised to learn that libraries have changed for the bette r. It’s been years since they were dusty little rooms with books. They have transformed themselves into places where you can develop your love of knowledge meet interesting people, or find out how to start a business.

Check out a book. While libraries still loan out(出借)books, you’ll find it easier to get a copy of whatever you’re looking for, thanks to a cooperative network of area libraries. Via such networks, libraries share their books with each other through the use of delivery vehicles. Once the book y ou’ve reque sted is delivered to the nearest branch, they will inform you by e-mail, so you can pick it up.

Check out other items. The library is now a multimedia zone, loaded with information in many formats(载体形式). You can borrow movies on DVDs, music on CDs, and popular magazines. Some libraries even loan out toys and games. If a popular magazine you want isn’t offered and the library keeps a list of such requests, they may bring it in when enough interest is shown.

Join targeted reading groups. Libraries will often hold reading-group sessions targeted to various age groups. Perhaps you’d like to learn a language or improve your English. The library may sponsor a language group you could join. If you have difficulties reading, ask about special reading opportunities. Your library might be able to accommodate you. And you might find it relaxing to bring your small kid to a half-hour Story Time while you sit quietly in a corner with a good book.

Start a business using the help of your local library. If you want to have a business of your own, your local library can become a launch space for it. In library books and computers, you can find

information on starting a business. Many libraries will help you with locally supplied information about business management shared through chambers of commerce(商会)and government agencies, and they will offer printing, faxing and database services you need.

Why can some people sleep through noises like a honking car or flushing toilet, while others are awakened by the lightest sound?

To find the answer, sleep researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital conducted an unusual

study of 12 self-described deep sleepers. After tests confirmed that the healthy volunteers were solid sleepers, they took part in a three-nig ht study in the university’s sleep laboratory. The participants spent the night in a big and comfortable room. But the room also included four speakers positioned near the top of the bed.

During the night, the deep sleepers were subjected to 14 different recorded sounds, like street traffic, toilets flushing, and an airplane flying overhead. Next door, the researchers monitored their sleep patterns and brain waves.

As expected, all of the participants slept relatively well, but there were differences in how they responded to the noisy interruptions. Some of the sleepers didn’t wake up even when a sound was blasted at 70 decibels; others were awakened by sounds at 40 or 50 decibels.

The researchers discovered that the difference in a sleeper’s reaction to noi se could be predicted by the level of brain activity called “sleep spindles”. A sleep spindle is a burst of high-frequency brain activity coming from deep inside the brain during sleep. The source of the spindles is the thalamus(丘脑), a part of the brain that sends sensory information to the rest of the cortex(皮层).

Before the study, the Massachusetts researchers theorized that the spindles are the brain’s way of preventing sensory information from passing through the thalamus and waking the rest of the brain during sleep. They found that sleepers who experienced the most sleep spindles during the night were also the soundest sleepers and were least likely to be awakened by noise.

Scientists already know that most people become lighter sleepers with age, most likely because older people experience less “slow wave sleep”, which is the deepest stage of sleep. People also produce fewer sleep spindles as they age. But even when controlling for the stage of sleep a person was in, the number of sleep spindles still predicted their risk for awakening because of noise.

More research is needed, but the findings suggest that a better understanding of sleep spindles could lead to new behavioral or drug therapies for people with sleep disorders. For example, future studies may try to determine whether diet, exercise or other behaviors may influence the number of sleep spindles a person produces during the night.

26. Some participants can sleep well through loud noises mainly because _________.

A. their brains don’t respond to outside noises.

B. their brains react differently to noises.

C. they adapt to the environment quickly.

D. they don’t pay attention to the monitors.

27. Scientists believe that the key to affecting deep sleep is _________.

A. sleep spindles

B. stages of sleep

C. sleep disorders

D. sensory information

28. It can be learned from the passage that _________.

A. The older a deep sleeper becomes, the lighter his sleep must be.

B. The more “slow wave sleep” one experiences, the deeper sleep one has.

C. The more frequently a sleeper’s brain works, the less information it sends.

D. The deeper sleep people have, the more likely they will be awakened by noise.

29. From the passage we can predict _________.

A. more factors in influencing sleep spindles may be discovered.

B. more solid sleepers will take part in relative experiments.

C. sleep spindles will be applied to change one’s behaviors.

D. deep sleepers will probably enjoy a more healthy life.

30. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The differences between the deep sleepers and the light sleepers.

B. The experiments conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital.

C. The discovery and the importance of “sleep spindles”.

D. The new behaviors or drug therapies for people with sleep disorders.

C

Bit by bit, the sand dust that fills the sky is dying down. The blue sky and the burning sun once again hang over the desert.

He is on the road, driving his beat-up yellow cab. The sides of the road are littered with damaged vehicles. Masses of smoke in the distance tell him that a war is being dragged on throughout his country.

It’s a fine day despite the choking heat. Not a breath of wind is blowing.

A group of vehicles are traveling towards him, carrying many passengers. The scene reminds him of the market days in this country when crowds of trucks transport folks to the markets; the only difference is, this time, they are not trucks, but tanks, carrying foreigners, guns in hand. He stares at them. They stare back. So they pass by one another.

“The damned war!” he whispers bitterly. Two days ago, a bomb fell on the market in front of his house, destroying nearly everything in sight. He survived by luck. He decided then and there that he would give up this cab business. This will be his final run. After this, he will leave this place together with his wife and children.

“Shala and my children, we’ll soon meet each other again, after I’m done here.” He turns his

head to take a glance at a photo of his wife and children. The glass on the frame is broken, but their smiles in the picture do not fail to provide him with the only comfort that he has.

Shortly he arrives at a checkpoint. Tanks sit by the side of the road, the sight of which sends a marked coldness through his backbone. A bunch of soldiers armed to the teeth stand by. A foreign soldier signals him to stop. He calms himself down and pulls over. During the past few days, nearly no civilian vehicles come out of the capital city, his car being the only one on roads.

A few foreign soldiers come up to him, one, two, three, four, five. The leader bends over to have a look at the old car, then a t him. “Where do you come from and where are you going?” With a smile on his face, he answers with a broken speech in the tongue that the soldier can understand, “Sir, I come from the capital. I’m leaving that place because it is a very dangerous place to be, with the war and everything.”

While talking, he hands a cigarette over to the soldier, then lights it up for him.

“When will the war end?” he asks.

“It won’t take long. We’ll soon give all of you in the capital the true freedom.” The soldier breathes a deep mouthful. He seems to have spotted the photo in the car, “The cigarette is not bad at all. Are those your wife and kids? I have two of my own, roughly the same age.”

“Oh, yes, they are mine and they are constantly on my mind. They left the city a bit earlier, and I’m on my way to be reunited with them. Perhaps I’m never coming back. Driving a cab around during war times is too dangerous. I’m giving up the business.” He looks at the soldier, still smiling.

“After we overthrow your dictator, you won’t h ave that to worry about. You can come back and pick up your life again.” The soldier is leaning on the door of the car. It is perhaps the first time in many days that he has seen a happy face among the local people. It cheers him up.

“Maybe, but I have to go to see my family. If you would pay us a visit, my wife will prepare a good meal for all of you. Come with me. This is going to be my last business run and I won’t even charge you.”

“Can’t make it. We’re on duty. Give our regards to your wife and kids.” The soldier is a bit excited, thinking maybe quite some locals have open arms for them after all. “Oh, yes, I almost forgot. The south is battle-infected. Where is your family?”

Still smiling, he picks up the broken picture frame, presses a kiss on the photo, then turns around, staring into the eyes of that soldier, not quite himself from excitement, and the other foreign soldiers holding guns. Words drop out of his lips slowly but firmly:

“Paradise.”

Perhaps the last thing he sees is the confused, fearful, twisted expression on the face of that soldier, and the cigarette end dropping from his fingers.

Then he pushes the button.

Easy Ways to Give Yourself a Fresh Start

It doesn't need to be complicated or challenging to turn a fresh page on each new day.

Whenever we mark a new year---by turning the calendar, returning to school or celebrating a holiday---we are looking for a fresh start. 36But how? Here are some easy ways to connect with that feeling of starting fresh, whether it's a new year or simply a new day in our life.37This means you have realized what serves your life now and what can stay in your past. Or invest in a new pen and a new notebook. Having fresh supplies can stimulate even the common task of creating your to-do list.

Moreover, you can learn something new by opening a book you've been expecting to read, searching a question that's been on your mind, enrolling in a class that motivates your interest. Of course you can simply ask a friend for a fresh idea about an issue. 38

Take a break from technology---for an hour, a day, or a week. 39You should be able to put some space between yourself and digital routines.

One reason we sometimes struggle to start fresh is that you get stuck reflecting on worrisome thoughts about the past, the future or even the present. 40 Allow these thoughts into your day only at a brief (30 minutes or less), specific time. The rest of the time, focus on what

you are doing that is new and positive.

How do you give yourself that "fresh start" feeling?

A. Electronic Products might not be serving you best.

B. Newness or the freshness can guide us on a positive path.

C. Limit your daily "worry time" and make an appointment with yourself.

D. All of us enjoy newness, but what is it that leads to a sense of freshness?

E. Realizing your past mistakes, you should move forward with enthusiasm.

F. Increasing your knowledge on any topic means taking your mind into a fresh area.

G. First, even letting go of a single box or bag of items can give you a refreshing sense.

第七部分书面表达(满分20分)

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My name is John and I must share with you an event which took place on Flight 1553 out of DCA. My wife and I were traveling to Miami to celebrate an achievement for her and as you can imagine, we were looking forward to fun, sun and laughter.

We boarded the aircraft, without a care in the world. It was cold in Washington and we were ready for Florida. Shortly after taking my seat, I began to feel sick. I knew something wasn't right but just couldn't find out what was happening. Being a doctor and a stubborn man, I resisted efforts by my wife to call for assistance. As the aircraft began its departure roll, I lost consciousness for a short amount of time. As I came around, I quickly realized a few things. Firstly, something very bad had happened to me. Secondly, the aircraft was too heavy with the fuel to go back home. Thirdly, my loss of consciousness had been so deep that I found myself out of control. So not only did I have a medical issue to deal with, but I also had to figure out how to deal with an embarrassing experience.

My wife gathered the crew as soon as it was safe to move about and I made my way to the washroom to attempt to clean up. I did my best and the flight crew members were so supportive, checking on me often and reassuring me that there was nothing to be embarrassed about.

It was their sympathy and support that helped me so much. During the flight they kept watching over me and I suddenly had a small group of nurse, bringing blankets, food, drinks and caring and smile. I was thankful to them.

M: Yes. And I phoned her and explained it to her.

W: Did you go to the film yesterday evening?

M: Yes, but it was too noisy, so I didn’t finish watching it.

W: Neither did I. I was always wondering why the children were so excited that they were talking loudly from the beginning to the end.

M: What was worse, they ate snacks and threw rubbish everywhere.

W: I’m afraid that their parents should be blamed.

W: Aha, what a good job waiting for me!

M: Are you smiling to yourself? You have found the right job?

W: Sure, Prince William and his new wife Kate are advertising for servants.

M: To help them with their housework, right?

W: Right, their day-to-day life, including everything.

M: They only need one servant?

W: God, we have just one Prince William in Britain.

M: And there are only three princes in Britain now, I know that.

W: You know they have so many important things to do every day.

M: You mean they will find a team of servants?

W: At least four to help them when they are staying at their new London apartment!

M: You will have a try?

W: Absolutely, you know I love Kate better than myself.

W: Hello, Jim. I’m a journalist from the youth. I’d like to have a talk with you. OK?

M: With pleasure. What shall we talk about?

W: OK. You look over 2 meters tall, don’t you?

M: No, I’m 1.98 meters tall. I’m the third tal lest in my team.

W: When did you begin to play basketball for the National Team?

M: Two years ago when I was playing in the Gold Cattle Team, I was asked to join the National Team.

W: Is it very tiring to practice basketball every day?

M: Oh, no. We d on’t play all day long. Generally speaking, we practice before breakfast and then

M: Chinese, English, math, politics and history. Life in here is very interesting.

M: I hope so. I’m shopping around for Christmas gifts for the staff of our company.

W: May I ask you who are buying for?

M: CBA company. There are so many choices that I can’t decide.

W: CBA company. We’ve done quite a lot of business with your company in the past, I believe. M: That’s right. That is why I come to your store first.

W: Excuse me. Mr. Blake has resigned?

M: No. He has been sent to the headquarter. So I take over his position and I am in charge of choosing gifts this year.

W: I see. Glad to meet you. Would you like to step up here for a close watch? We’ve made great improvement since we last did business with you.

M: Later on, perhaps. Right now I’d like to have a good look at your booklet.

W: Certainly. Take as many as you need. Come back any time you’re ready.

M: Thanks.

Hello, I am Oasis. This year, I am running for treasurer of our class. Twelfth grade will be our last year at this school. I believe none of us wants to end the year with no fun! As a result, I want to do something different in our class than in other years. Please vote for me because of the following reasons:

First of all, I have great quality to be the treasurer! People think it is easier to take care of your own money than others. And yes, it is true. But I am capable of this challenge, I am organized, responsible, and ... good at math. You can definitely trust me with our class money.

I will keep treasury clear, make sure every income and withdraw beneficial for our class. This is my duty for being a treasurer and I will take it seriously. I will set up a document that shows our class bill monthly. In that way, everyone can ask questions and give advice. You will know how our class donation is doing and how every spending is used, and actually be a part of it.

Lastly, I want you all to trust me that I will do what I said today. Please think more before you vote, and give your twelfth grade year a good treasurer and an Oasis.

Vote for me. Thank you.
