How to improve reading and writing skills?

陈小伟Reading and writing are the same important for us all,but how to improve our skills of reading and writing,especially for middle school students.

Now I’ll talk about my practice in reading and writing.

A. How to improve reading skill?

We all know,reading has been playing an important role in learning a foreign language all the time.Actually,we can also tell from our own experience that it’s quite valuable to receive special training in English reading.We can come to know the knowledge about the local conditions and customs in English speaking countries through reading.Only through wide reading we can broaden our outlook and improve our sense of knowledge.

Improving reading skills,in fact,is improving the ability of thoughts. It’s along-time course and we all should follow in order and advance step by step.We teachers must regard every practice of reading as a course of training students’thoughts.We should use many different kinds of ways to put up questions and situations in order to develop the students’ thoughts in reading、listening、talking and writing.And students will realize that the different ways of thinking in different countries bring difficulties of understanding.So,improving the ability of cross-culture thought is also important.

Skills of reading comprehension can be trained by the means of intensive reading and extensive reading.Texts are often used as intensive materials.

From my own teaching experience.After prepaying new words to the students,I usually give them some before-questions and after-questions in order to help them understand the content and feedback the level of reading comprehension.

Such questions can be listed as the following several kinds:

a:True or false questions and multiple choices.

b:why-questions-the anseers to the questions can be chased from the reading material directly.

c:How –questions-the keys to the questions can be found from among the characters and lines.

d:The answer can’t be searched according to the reading materal directly.Instead,you must try to discover the keys by deducing a conclusion from the intention of the materials.

Explain necessary language points through the study of texts.Analysis of complex sentences is quite difficult for middle school students.As a teacher,we shoule give a detailed explanation on the structure of sentences.The order of the words within an English sentence doesn’t usually agree with that of Chinese.

To explain the words,phrases,sentences and paragraphs in English is also a practical method in intensive reading.The ability of using dictionaries is one of the most important methods in training students’independent reading ability.

In this new pattern,I’d like to emphasize another point –interest.Everyone is

full of affecting.Stimulating reading motive and arousing readinginterest is also quite important in improving reading skills.When people have special aims,the aims can be changed into motive.When readers hope to get information and knowledge,the consciousness and enthusiasm of readers come into being,and they will affect readers’reading.When readers take interest in the material,they can be a state without tiredness and worry for a long time.Once readers having some interests, their minds go into a state:desiring to get information as mush as they can.And the resust of reading is really connected with the effect of studying so we must encourage students to have extensive interested in all kinds of different readings.

If the students have mastered the basic knowledge and formed the habit of listening and speaking,it will be necessary to put emphasis on reading so as to improve their communicative ability. In conclusion,focal points should tally with the actual demands.

B.How to improve writing?

While our students are interested in reading,we teachers should think how to improve their writing.

A lot of teachers sometimes may think that it is a hard job to guide writing and dear that students are not able to write well.Especially for middle school students I think,the problem lies is the fact that students don’t have much reading.That’s to say”Guide writing through reading.”Only by reading enough material can we make full use of .In my opinion,from reading to writing is a good method to train students’writing ability.a certain amount of reading plays an important part in collecting materials as well as in choosing or thinking up right ways of expressing.Without reading widely and frequently,students cannot write properly and correctly.At present,Chinese students are busy with many subjects and therefore they can spend little time doing extensive reading.So it’s practical for teachers to encourage students to read again and again the familiar articles in the textbooks,and try to make full use of them as examples.

Before dealing with a text,we can ask the students to collect as much information as possible connected with the topic of the text,and discuss it in groups or pairs.Iregard it as a good chance for students to learn to think in English and express themselves in English.Secondly guiding writing through homework design.1. Copy the writing materials they’ve learned in each unit.Writing materials include words,sentences and short passages.It seems too easy for the students to copy the materials but in fact,students often make mistakes in spelling,and some students; handwriting is very terrible.At the same time,ask the students to learn the texts that they learn by heart.From this kind of homework,students can practice English writing.2.After class,they can write an outline of the passage using the words I give.After learning a text,we can do some imitation exercises.For example:”Go for it(Unit 10 P63 3 a”New Year’s Resolution Survey Results”)After learning it. Ask the students to write the plan “Talk about your plan”3.Make new conversation.”Go for it”includes too many pictures. After students learn and grasp the language structures and language goals of each unit,we can ask them to make new conversations,using the pictures or prompted information.This king of homework can improve students’

writing ability.4.Diary:Ask students to write a diary every day then correct the mistakes they make in time.Read the best ones to the students.This kind of homework can slso help the students improve writing.5.There’s a topic in each unit,we should train students,writing ability by compositions.According to the topic,we’d better arrange a composition class in teaching each unit.Give the students necessary circumstances information and eccourage them to write compositions.Then we correct the compositions carefully or get the students to correct each other under the teacher’s guide.Step by step,the students will no longer be afraid of writing compositions.

There are many different ways to improve writing ability.They are the ways Ihave ever tried and they have better effect on training students’ written English.On the other hand writing anility is not a single ability,which connects with listening,reading and speaking.They can’t be separated from each other.

So “practice makes perfect.”keep reading and writing continuously in our daily and we’ll surely be successful in the future.
