The Best Ways for College Students to Deal with Depression

In recent years, there is a widespread concern over social issues resulted from psychological problems of university students. Those psychological problems are stemmed from various pressures that they are suffering from inside or outside, such as study stress, emotional problems, and employment pressure. Once students endure too much pressure, they are likely to fall into depression. So what can college students do to deal with depression? To my point of view, we can take measures as follows.

In the first place, we shall take a correct attitude towards depression. Faced with depression, I think different people may have different attitudes to it. However, among various attitudes, the most advisable attitude I believe is to face up to it optimistically. A maxim in the Bible says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Besides, the famous French writer Hugo once said, “Thoughts can change paradise into hell and vice versa.” Therefore, it is better for us to get depression out of our systems earlier than to fear and dodge it.

Secondly, it is right for us to analyze the cause of depression and find out appropriate methods to dispel it. Certainly, depressions aroused by different reasons correspond to their particular solutions. For instance, if one falls into depression on account of enormous employment pressure, he should first have a proper understanding of himself, neither thinking highly of nor belittling himself, and then improve his comprehensive quality and set up updated employment views. Finally, he must possess the spirit to bear hardships and is willing to start at the bottom.

In addition, appropriate catharsis is necessary. Catharsis is a good method of mind cure, which can reduce or even eliminate stress. Usually, we will unbosom ourselves to our families or good friends when we feel depressed. Besides, taking exercises and listening to music are good ways to relieve ourselves. According to reports, music possesses healing powers to pain and diseases. Since the beginning of 20th century, many hospitals have used music to neutralize patients’emotions and reduce stress. Moreover, release therapy has recently become current.

Through our lives, especially during college years, we will encounter many setbacks that may sometimes result in our falling into depression. When faced with it, I think the best ways for us college students to deal with depression are optimistic confrontation and proper catharsis.
