Trapped in an elevator These holes can help you out.

Have you seen that tiny hole on the elevator door It might just save your life. Say the elevator you’re in stops at a floor and the doors don’t open. It could be a power failure or an equipment failure. But getting out isn’t easy. Elevators are equipped with lots of features(特征) to keep the doors from opening freely or when they’re between floors.

“What you’ll usually see is that the fire department, or sometimes the building worker will come and use some ways to get the people out while the problem is being worked on.” says Robert Solomon, the director of building and fire protection systems for the National Fire Protection Association.

That’s where those small holes come in. Opening the doors requires a special tool. It is pushed into the door to release the landing door. Since the fire department began requiring them in the 1970s, manufacturers such as Otis and Schindler have equipped their elevators with them.

The keys are usually held by a special number of people, such as an elevator worker or building assistant in charge. The fire department also requires that special access tools for each building be kept in a secure location such as a Knox Box that firefighters can open.

“Fortunately, it’s rare that using the keys is necessary.” Solomon says.

28. Why are elevators fixed with special features

A. To make sure of safety.

B. To open the door easily.

C. To increase of efficiency.

D. To let the air in.

29. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 probably refer to

A. Keys.

C. Small holes.

D. Tools.

30. Where should special access tools be put

A. In an obvious place.

B. In a safe spot.

C. At the building corner.

D. On the special shelf.

31. What can be a suitable title for the text

A. The steps you escape from the trapped elevator

B. The right key elevators should be opened at once

C. The measures you should take in the trapped elevator

D. The real reason elevators have those small holes

D

A common argument for expanding renewable energy sources is that technologies such as solar panels (太阳板)release far less carbon dioxide than power plants(发电厂) that burn oil. Only about 3 percent of the Earth’s water is freshwater, most of which is frozen—That means only 0.8 percent of the planet’s water can be served for human use. Water is a necessary, but limited product. And nearly 1 billion people worldwide lack of fresh water. In the U.S., 45.3 percent of the freshwater is used to cool off thermoelectric (热电)power plants: nuclear reactors and plants that burn oil.

To provide electricity for an average home, a nuclear power plant requires 615 gallons of cooling water a day, a coal-fired plant, 199 gallons per day, and a natural gas power plant, 114 gallons per day. Let’s look at how much water each power source takes to make one megawatt(兆瓦)-hour of electricity.

Nuclear reactors are the highest, at 13,000 gallons. Then comes coal, natural gas. The water needed by solar panels is lower. These numbers only reflect operations to make electricity; they do not include water used to get the fuel or make the power. For example, fracking (水力压裂)can use hundreds of thousands of gallons each time to make a rock cracked to release natural gas. Large quantities of water becomes vapor. The rest is sent back to the environment, but some of that is fixed with chemicals, and most of it is hot, which can kill fish and other living things.

Natural gas, coal and nuclear power plants ranked one, two and three in 2016, according to the total amount of U.S. electricity made in a year. And natural gas is projected to become even more important through 2050.

To protect fresh water, it seems clear that the country should change toward renewables. This would make more freshwater for food production and human use.

32.Which uses the most water to make electricity

A. Coal-fired plant.

B. A natural gas power plant.

C. Solar panels.

D. A nuclear power plant.

33.For what purpose does the author provide so many numbers

A. To provide proof to scientists.

B. To state the fact of making electricity.

C. To tell readers to treasure freshwater.

D. To prove that non-renewable energy uses much more water.

34.What suggestion does the author make in the passage

A. Fresh water should be protected.

B. Renewable energy should be put into use.

C. Non-renewable energy should use less water.

D. People should save fresh water.

35. What is the main idea of the text

A. Non-renewable energy pollutes environment.

B. Renewable energy saves water.

C. Electricity needs much water to make.

D. Ways are listed to make electricity.

Today, most homes have a can opener. 36 Canning food is a great way to make food last longer. We can buy many types of canned food―meat, fruit, vegetables, and soup. And a can opener is the tool that we use to open the cans easily.

The idea of canning food originally began with glass cans. Peter Durand invented the first tin cans for preserving food

in the 1800s. At that time, these first cans were developed

for the British Navy. However, they were difficult to open.

37 The instructions for opening the cans said,“ Open with hammer and chisel.”

Thinner tin cans were developed around 1860. In 1858, Ezra Warner developed the first version of the can opener. It

worked like a bayonet(刺刀) and sickle(小镰刀). The

“bayonet” pierced the can, and "the sickle" lifted the lid

up by turning it. This can opener was only available at the store at that time. 38

The first can opener consisting of a sharp rotating

cutting wheel was invented in 1870. 39 Then, a breakthrough design came in 1925 when a second serrated wheel(锯齿轮) was added to hold the cutting wheel on the ring of the can. This easy-to-use design has become one of the most popular can opener models.

40 Now many people have electric can openers which make

it much easier to open the can, and you don’t have to turn it yourself. However, it is a good idea to keep a can opener that is not electric in your house.

A. It is impossible for the ordinary people to own one.

B. Cans would be opened before the customer left the store.

C. Over the years, the can opener has been improved greatly.

D. They were made of iron and weighed more than the food inside.

E. This is because most of us have some canned food at our homes.

F. But it was considered too difficult for the ordinary consumers to operate.

G. Therefore, many people were trying to replace it with a more practical one.

You would think people like this have special brains. But accordingto a recent study by researchers from the US and the Netherlands, the brain structuresof ordinary people and 23 of the world’s leading memory athletes show no difference. That’s because good memories can be trained. New research inthe journal Neuron suggests that you can become a super memorizer with just sixweeks of hard training. Researchers found that technique called loci, invented by ancient Greeks, can greatly help improve memory. By using loci, you are using your imagination toimprove the brain’s memory ne tworks. You can link something you need to remember with aplace that you know very well. For example, to remember a list of numbers, imagineyourself walking through your house.

Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______.
