Topic: Gender Equality in Political Participation

Since the twentieth century, women have made indefatigable effort to fight for their rights. One of the result from the struggle, women come to have gender Equality in political participation.

Pakistan is a Muslim country, this means that the women here have more strict rules to obey, are more limited. According to Islamic teachings, women are made with man's ribs, so they are doomed to be the affiliate of men. Muslim girls and boys study at completely different schools, girls mainly focus on f the cultivation of housewife, unlike boys learn more social and natural science content. And Pakistan still admits Polygamy, means men can have more than one wife. If a woman marries a man, she can’t get divorced or marry others, even if his husband dies. And most marriages are arranged by their parents. In Pakistan, family violence is very common; some husbands even killed their wife with” maintain family honor” as an excuse. Hundreds of women are killed in lynching every year. And women have less freedom in their daily life. If we can’t change the situation that Women’s Status is below men’s, we can’t discuss the “gender Equality in political participation”. So we have a long way to fight for gender Equality.

However, Pakistan takes effective steps to change the situation. Nowadays, the statuses of women gradually improve. Career women are changing Pakistan through education. Schools which Urban group founded is all around our country .By

founding school, we have successfully solved the women elite employment problem. 80% of the staffs are women, 90% of teachers are women. Besides engaging in professional work, these professional women also play the role of wife and mother. Today, Pakistan's female diplomats, female press and female professional workers are getting more and more, this shows the progress of the society.Because of the impact of globalization, more and more Pakistani women aware of their role in society. And Pakistanis also get to know women’s value to national development and social progress of the contribution and potential role.

On 15 November 2006, The Women's Protection Bill (Criminal Laws Amendment) was passed by the National Assembly of Pakistan. It is an attempt to amend the heavily criticized Hudood Ordinance laws which govern the punishment for rape and adultery in Pakistan. And Pakistan is focusing on reform to build the equality between men and women.

Also, more and more women take part in political participation. Now, men and women enjoy the right in politics, even can take part in participate in parliamentary election. We have many female politicians, such as Benazir Bhutto, who was twice as Pakistani prime minister, and many female ministers.

Pakistan will continue to reform to fight for gender Equality. And we hope other Muslim countries to respect women’s right as well. We are looking forward to a better day for women.
