Several years ago, Jim Turner heard a program on the

radio for the N.C. Children’s Hospital and decided he could use

his love of origami art to help the hospital raise money for

much-needed programs.

So at the age of 13, Turner began making origami greeting

cards and selling them to florists and stationery stores to benefit origami

the hospital. His fundraising program, known as Heartbeats for

Kids, has since raised more than $ 2,500 for the hospital. “The first cards I made had a heart in them and you could remove the heart from the card and make it beat,” Turner says, explaining how he came up with the name for the fundraiser.

Now a 17-year-old high school junior, Turner has less time to devote to card-making, because origami is labor intensive and each card can take up to 30 minutes to design. But Turner still enjoys origami art and has created original designs that have been selected for exhibits that tour the country and world.

Turner is an interesting mixture of engineer, artist and philanthropist. His mother, Peggy Turner, says folding origami is a combination of math and art that has helped her son develop his spatial visualization of 3-D objects. Turner is also involved in community service at school and at his church. He was named a Distinguished Finalist this year for the 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for his community service activities, including the Heartbeats for Kids project. In the process of his volunteer efforts, Turner also managed to be one of the only 381 youths in the country to earn the top score of 2,400 on his SA T.

Making and selling the greeting cards has taught Turner about managing a small business. “I learned you need to have somebody who will support you,” he says. “Business es I sell to have been very nice to me.”

The cards benefit not only the hospital, but also the people who buy the cards or get the cards. Turner sees it as a way to bring people together.

56. Turner’s original purpose of making and selling his cards was to _______.

A. show his love for origami art

B. collect money for the hospital

C. learn how to manage a business

D. bring more people together

57. From Paragraph 3, we can learn that card making _________.

A.needs physical and mental work

B. is well worth admiring

C.takes up a lot of Turner’s time

D. is difficult to learn

58. What does the writer tell us about Turner?

A. He has already become a successful businessman.

B. He spends a lot of his time working for his church.

C. He designs a heart in each card that has been made.

D. He does well in both his lessons and community service.

59. The passage is mainly about ________.

A. a kid who makes a difference

B. origami art that helps earn money

C. making and selling greeting cards

D. getting involved in community service

Dear Dad,

Today I was at the shopping mall and I spent a lot of time reading the Father’s Day cards. They all had a special message that in some way or another reflected how I feel about you. Yet as I selected and read, it occurred to me that not a single card said what I really want to say to you.

You’ll soon be 84 years old, Dad, and you and I will have had 55 Father’s Days together. I haven’t always been with you on Father’s Day but I’ve always been with you in my heart.

You know, Dad, there was a time when we were separated by the generation gap. You stood on one side of the Great Divide and I on the other.

The Father-Daughter Duel shifted into high gear(档位)when you taught me to drive the old Dodge and I decided I would drive the '54 Chevy whether you liked it or not. The police officer who sent me home after you reported the Chevy stolen didn’t have much tolerance for a stubborn 16 year old, while you were so tolerant about it, Dad, and I think that was probably what made it the worst night of my life.

Our relationship greatly improved when I married a man you liked, and things really turned around when we began making babies right and left. Somewhere along the line, the generation gap disappeared. I suppose I saw us and our relationship as aging together, rather like a fine wine.

But the strangest thing happened last week. I was at a stop sign and I watched as you turned the corner in your car. It didn’t immediately occur to me that it was you because the man driving looked so elderly and fragile behind the wheel of that huge car. It was rather like a slap in the face delivered from out of nowhere. Perhaps I saw your age for the first time that day.

I gue ss what I’m trying to say, Dad, is what every son and daughter wants to say to their Dad today. Honoring a f ather on Father’s Day is about respect and sharing and acceptance and tolerance and giving and taking. It’s about loving someone more than words can say,and it’s wishing that it never had to end.

I love you, Dad.

While some scientists overlook the existence of a sixth sense for danger, a new research from Washington University in St. Louis has identified a brain area that clearly acts as an early warning system and helps us adjust our behavior to avoid dangerous situations.

“Our brains are better a t picking up not obvious warning signs than we previously thought,” said Joshua Brown, PhD, a research associate in psychology in the Feb. 18 issue of the journal Science.

The findings offer exact scientific evidence for a new way to form a concept of the complex control processes taking place in and around the ACC, a brain area located near the top of the frontal lobes and along the walls that divide the left and right hemispheres(大脑半球).

“In the past, we found activity in the ACC when people had to make a difficult decision, or after they made a mistake,” Brown said. “But now we find that this brain area can actually learn to recognize when you might make a mistake, even before a difficult decision has to be made. So the ACC appears to act as an early warning system—it learns to warn us in advance when our behavior might lead to a negative outcome, so that we can be more careful and avoid making a mistake.”

By providing a clearer picture of the cognitive mechanisms(认知结构) by which we self monitor and control our behavior, the study is an important step in efforts to develop more effective treatments for mental illnesses. It also provides a new way of understanding inappropriate behaviors that often accompany mental illnesses.

“Our results suggest how injury of the ACC mechanisms can lead to breakdowns in the early warning system, so that the brain fails to stop or control inappropriate behavior ahead of time,” said Brown. “On the other hand, in those persons with mental disorder, the ACC might warn of an upcoming problem even when no problem is in the existence.”

Known to be an important part of the brain’s control system, the ACC is believed to help adjust between cold, hard, fact-based reasoning and emotional responses, such as love, fear or expectation.

64. According to the passage, the ACC _____________.

A. refers to the sixth sense for danger

B. deals with obvious warning signs

C. connects the left and right hemispheres

D. sends warning messages in advance

65. The new research is beneficial because it __________.

A. provides a new way of avoiding mistakes

B. adjusts emotional responses in time of danger

C. helps find better treatments for mental illnesses

D. assists people in predicting and avoiding danger

66. The new research helps us understand ____________.

A. why we are likely to make mistakes when the ACC is badly injured

B. why people with mental illnesses usually have strange behaviors

C. how the ACC works when something dangerous happens

D. how our brain warns us of failure in advance

D

The Celebration Experiment

In the 1960s, Walt Disney pictured in the mind a future utopian city with underground roads and a climate-controlled round roof. The real community of Celebration, Florida, built in 1999, applies the social and environmental goals of both Disney and the New Urbanism movement.

Disney and the New Urbanism have imagined communities that promote social and local communication. Celebration has a central Market Street district to reduce traffic and encourage social contacts. The idea is that if the downtown area is neatly and closely ranked, people will walk and meet their neighbors. Downtown events like art festivals also bring citizens together. Narrow, tree-lined streets are “traffic calm”—with slower speed limits—to encourage bicycling and walking.

Moreover, housing in Celebration includes both single- and multi-family houses that encourages socialization. Apartment buildings are located close to downtown, and houses are built close together with small yards. They feature entrance halls to encourage citizens to socialize.

“Many aspects of that kind of design are really aimed at maximizing social communication between citizens, not just on the streets but also in community institutions that are very much a part of public life there,” says Andrew Ross, a New York University professor who lived in Celebration for one year.

Utopian communities such as Celebration are also designed with environmental protection in mind. The town itself is built on 4,900 acres surrounded by a 4,700 acre protected greenbelt. The greenbelt parks, and common areas accommodate native wildlife and animals.

High-rise office and apartment buildings provide close office and living space in a small geographic area in order to reduce urban sprawl, the spread of today’s cities onto nature areas. Buildings also minimize environmental influence by using cooling and electric systems with insulated(绝缘的;隔热的)glass, cooling towers, and energy-saving lamps.

“The town more or less borrows very heavily from New Urbanist principles …to create

environmentally friendly alternatives to sprawl and to create communities around people rather than vehicles,” Ross said.

67. Celebration mentioned in the passage is a __________.

A. city offering living spaces

B. community promoting socialization

C. special occasion in the market

D. downtown area with high buildings

68. The purpose of holding Art festivals mentioned in Paragraph 2 is to __________.

A. exhibit art works

B. attract artists for profits

Now it is job hunting season again. The job fairs flood with hundreds and thousands of 2011 graduate students. Owing to the global financial crisis, most of the graduate students admit that job hunting is not that easy any longer.

It is always a painful process for college students to find jobs. 71 However, job positions are quite limited. In order to get a job, the candidates should be more competitive than ever before.

A Chinese expert predicted that the job hunting pressure in China, with a rocketing increase in the active labor force, would reach its climax in 2006. Yet, this situation continues in 2010. In order to transfer the human resources that are more than needed or wanted to the less developed areas in China, the government has tried to launch a series of policies to help release the pressure.

72

73 A higher education may be more helpful to find a good job in the future, while the temptation of an exciting job and the strong will of being a “real” adult urge the youth to step into society early. For example, when an undergraduate mechanical science and technology major at a famous university is preparing for his postgraduate exam, he receives an offer from a big foreign company one day. 74 Anyway, it is really tough to prepare for the postgraduate examination.

75 This is a tough time and everyone should have some shining points to win the employers’ favor. As products of universities, college students are expected to be first-rate talents and should step into the excellent group in the society. However, these students may achieve unexpected success in the fields where their professional knowledge functions to its maximization.

A. Most probably, he is so excited that he decides to quit the exam next year.

B. Almost everyone worries about the result of the postgraduate examination.

C. “Survival of the fittest.” Darwin’s evolution theory appear s in the personnel market.

D. With many colleges enlarged in recent years, large numbers of graduates need to hunt jobs.

E. What’s more, financial support is provided to encourage the graduates to start their own career.

F. To go on with further education or to find a job is one of the hardest decisions for the graduate students to make now

G. Competition for a job would be fierce as graduates this year will have to join the job hunting group from previous years.

Recently, a survey on homework preference has been conducted among senior three students. The results are as follows: more than half of the students, about 54%, usually put their math homework in the first place while only 7% would rank Chinese as the most important. Meanwhile, English is regarded as most significant by 18% of the participants, and the other subjects attract the attention of 21% of the students.

There is a profound difference between math and Chinese. Without doubt, some students hold the view that math is most interesting and challenging, and it seems easier for us to have a sense of achievement in it. However, each subject has its unique charm and they are of the same value. Therefore, I think we should take every subject seriously and improve our studies in a balanced way.

立意:Encouragement helps make more progress

As can be seen in the picture, a boy with two wings is flying high in the sky, his face shining with a confident smile, while below him there are many people holding up their thumbs or giving signs of victory.

What the picture tries to tell us is the importance of encouragement. Since life is full of challenges and difficulties, people need to be encouraged when facing difficulty. There is no denying that almost everyone is likely to do better if others see more of their advantages rather than their weak points. It is other people’s support that gives us the wings to fly. Encouragement from parents, teachers and friends can promote one’s ability and enhance one’s confidence.

In my opinion, everyone should learn to help and encourage others on their way to success.

M: I was born in California, and we lived there until I was seven.

W: Oh yeah? Where did you go after that?

M: Well, we spent a total of ten years in Germany and Japan, and then we returned to the States, but I think my parents would have stayed in Japan, let's say, another 20 years had it not been for my education.

M: I m a student at Purdue University.

M: What bad luck! Tomorrow I’m taking my driving test once again. I’ve already failed it twice before, so I’m really nervous. The first time I did the test, I wasn’t surprised that I failed because I hadn’t studied the traffic r ules. In fact, I broke a lot of traffic rules during that test. I was quite disappointed about the second test, though. That time I had studied all the rules and had practiced driving for ages, but I still failed. This was because when I was driving along, a dog suddenly appeared in front of my car. I hit it before I could stop the car. I wonder what will happen tomorrow.

Text 9:

W: Today, we have Dr. Smith here, an expert on agriculture. Dr. Smith, you are working with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Would you please tell our listeners something about diseases recently spreading among animals?

M: Well, animal diseases were reported recently in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Some of the diseases are deadly. The UN officials give two reasons for animal disease spreading.

One is the increased international trade in animals and animal products. The other is the movement of people and animals from country to country.

W: How can we prevent and treat animal diseases?

M: Well, no country can claim to be safe from animal diseases. Medical care of animals is very important.

W: Do animal diseases kill human beings?

M: It was reported that Bird Flu killed over 200 people in Vietnam last month.

W: How about the other animal diseases?

M: Several years ago, China reported outbreaks of SARS, and thousands of people lost their lives. Last month, foot-and-mouth disease was reported in South Africa. In just one month, 36,000 head of cattle were killed to control the disease.

Text 10

Once you’re in the exam hall there is unfortunately no escape and so the best thing to do is get on with it. However, a little bit of preparation beforehand can make the whole experience less challenging.

Here are some tips.

Get a schedule—Before you start, sit down and make a list of all the exams you are taking including dates and times. This will ensure that you cover all areas.

Keep it brief—The idea of review notes is that they are brief and include only the most important points. Write down dates and the main points of a process or event – making sure that you have armed yourself with enough information to answer any questions.

Restrict your time—Reviewing in 20 minutes is usually advisable as any more than that will make you bored. Taking regular breaks will let your brain absorb the information. Two to three topics a night is a good way to get through everything.

Calm down—Once you’ve done the review the only things you can do then are: calm down, drink plenty of water, try to get lots of sleep and eat properly so that you can concentrate effectively.

All the houses are painted white and the skies are clear. It's not surprising that the life here is very relaxing, and it is also home to plenty of cafes and art galleries. Wengen in Switzerland Do you ever wonder how the world was before cars were invented? The village called Wengen might just help you realize your dreams. Cars have been banned from this area for close to 100 years, and everything looks like it was taken right out of Heidi. The locals have kept their Swiss culture undamaged. Shirakawa-go in Japan This village is certainly known for its unusual houses with triangular roofs which seem to resemble hands joined in prayer. It's designed to keep snow from piling up on top of houses. These houses are the symbol of the area but there aren't many of them left anymore. Eze in France France in itself is pretty, but its most attractive village is Eze. This community seems to be frozen in time. This village is the perfect melting pot of cultures because of its closeness to Nice. During the Middle Ages, it was desired by invaders(侵略者),and while this was a cause of sadness for the local people in the past, today the village enjoys its rich heritage(遗产).The architecture here is so diverse. A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
