Founded in 1927, our university is one of this city’s earliest un iversities of liberal arts. It is staffed with an excellent faculty, and has a total enrollment of over 10,000 students. In the past years, it has turned out numerous well-qualified students and found its graduates active in professions of all walks of life.
Since its establishment, the university has always steered itself toward the objective that its students have an overall healthy development. Not only does it provide the students with basic academic courses, but it manages to expose them to the up-to-date knowledge. Every year hundreds of thousands of people in China take civil service exams conducted at various levels in the hope of becoming government employees. Among them, college graduates are a fast-growing force that can’t be ignored. The craze for being a civil servant is not limited to liberal arts majors, as it’s also gaining popularity among science and engineering students.
In the final analysis, this growing trend among the youngsters is mainly attributable to two factors –ambitions and comforts. On one hand, many ambitious college graduates view these exams as a springboard to a higher social status, greater power and prestige, on which many of their other wishes rest. In recent years, college students find it increasingly difficult to get a job. It sounds strange since young college students are usually intelligent, well-educated phenomenon, aspirant and eager to bring their talent into full play. Then what underlies the strange phenomenon?
There are several reasons for this. To begin with, nowadays college students aim too high. All they want are "good" jobs which could offer good salary, comfortable working conditions, high social status among others. Consequently, most college students are unwilling to accept vacant jobs they consider not "good" enough. Another reason is that there is a big gap between the majors some students study in school and the demands of vacant jobs. So companies think some students are not fit for the jobs.
Solution to the problem requires efforts on both the society and the students. The companies should value the students, talent and knowledge while the latter should not merely aim at material gains. They should be down-to–earth in building up their career. Furthermore, they should face their weak points so as to improve themselves and be more competent.
On Water Shortage
No one can have failed to notice the fact that water shortage is a grave problem with which the whole world is confronted. Actually, it has become so widespread that it has severely affected people’s daily life and hindered the development of the global economy.
A number of factors could account for the problem, but the following might be the critical ones. First, with the development of agriculture and industry, an increasing amount of water is needed. Secondly, the ever-increasing population is another leading cause of water shortage. Besides, the global tendency of warming up also contributes to the problem. In view of the seriousness of the problem, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. Drunken Driving
Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that drunken driving has been a grave problem with which we are confronted. Generally speaking, there are several reasons accounting for /behind this phenomenon. Firstly, recent decades have witnessed the rapid development of people’s living standards. As a result, cars gained ever-increasing popularity and have found their way into our everyday life. Secondly, people participate in more activities or banquets than ever before, where they will drink liquor/strong wine. Then, they may get drunk but continue to drive.
Drunken driving is bound to generate severe consequence if we keep turning a blind eye to it. Firs and foremost, this behavior will directly threaten the safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians/goers, resulting in traffic accidents, injuries and even deaths. Besides, treating the injured and repairing broken cars mean a grievous waste of money, time and resources. Last but not least, this irresponsible driving will make the road a nightmare, and thus, it will causes serious losses of faith in governments and the society.
In view of the seriousness of this problem, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. First, it is essential that the supervisory role of laws and regulations should be strengthened to punish those performing drunken driving. Secondly, the public, especially drivers, should enhance their awareness of public safety. With stringent laws and alert public, it will only a matter of time for drunken driving to become things of past.

Faced with this situation, people will undoubtedly have different opinions. Some
believe that it benefits the social and economic development since driving force is often derived from the gap. In other words , the gap inspires people and gives a push to advancement. Other speak of its side effect: income gap is often the root of social unrest and also contrary to our country’s principle.
From my point of view, while it is true that the income may stimulate the social development to some extent, it causes trouble as well. An income gap that is too wide for most people to bear can neither contribute to the stability of a country nor promote its economic development. Therefore , while we are advocating the rapid development of our country , we should tolerate the narrow income gap but narrow the wide one.

A Letter to the Minister of Education
Dear Minister of Education,
I am a college student and I would like to suggest that students should be given several shorter breaks through the year instead of the traditional long vacations. The reasons why I am in favor of it are as follows.
First, students must work very hard at their studies. If they work for too long without a break, they may become overtired and discouraged. They may lose their enthusiasm for learning. Second, a very long vacation is not necessary. Students can recharge their energy in a few days rather than weeks.
Furthermore, many students do not use a long vacation wisely and just waste their time instead of doing something meaningful. And last but not least, vacations give students time to explore other interests and perhaps apply what they have been learning to the real world. If they always focus on their studies. They may lose touch with what is happening in their society.
In conclusion, I believe that students today would benefit more from several short vacations than they do form two long ones.
