Lesson 80 The Crystal Palace 【Text】 Perhaps the most extraordinary building of the nineteeth century was the Crystal Palace, which was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Crystal Palace was different from all other buildings in the world, for it was made of iron and glass. It was one of the biggest buildings of all time and a lot of people from many countries came to see it. A great many goods were sent to the exhibition from various parts of the world. There was also a great deal of machinery on display. The most wonderful piece of machinery on show was Nasmyth's steam hammer. Though in those days, traveling was not as easy as it is today, steam boats carried thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe. On arriving in England, they were taken to the Crystal Palace by train. There were six million visitors in all, and the profits from the exhibition were used to build museums and colleges. Later, the Crystal Palace was moved to South London. It remained one of the most famous buildings in the world until it was burnt down in 1936. New words and expressions 生词和短语 1. palace 1) n 宫殿 the Summy Palace 颐和园 Buckingham Palace 白金汉宫 2) n (尤其指欧洲大陆)华丽的大厦 eg: The nobles of Florence built splendid palaces. 1.Children who play truant from school are unimaginative. (1)play truant from school表示“逃学”,上下文清楚时也可以省略 from school,直接说 play truant. truant也可以单用,表示“逃学者”。 As a boy, Tom used to play truant (from school). The three boys who are fishing over there are truants and ought to be sent back to school. (2)unimaginative的反义词为imaginative(富于想像力的,爱想像的): Painters should be imaginative. He is an imaginative painter. 2.A quiet day's fishing, or eight hours in a cinema seeing the same film over and over again, is usually as far as they get. (2)over and over again为固定短语,表示“一再地”、“反复许多次地”:

2. d 根据课文最后一段…Oh, is it? ?said the sheriff with a sneer… …Now you get out of here fast!?可以判断只有d. didn?t believe that they were famous actors 是课文所暗示的情况,其他3个选择都与课文内容无关。 a. perfect 完美, b. quite perfect 相当完美, c. more perfect than is convenient(非常 的,超常的完美) d. almost perfect(几乎完美的)中,只有c. a. How 和d. What a 最符合语法,所以选c. 只有 c. you aren?t allowed to camp (不允许你野营)与No camping 的含义相同。而a. there isn?t any (没有任何什么);b. it?s without camping (没有野营);d. you needn?t camp (你没有必要野营)这3个选择都与No camping 含义不符,所以选c. 7. a 本句只有a. Providing that(以…… In the situation(处于这种形势)是介词短语, 不能引导从句。 a. cloth(布,织物), b. cloths(cloth的复数形式), c. clothing(衣服,衣着), d. dresses(衣 服)主要指某种场合穿的衣服,礼服。

Perhaps the most extraordinary building of the nineteenth century was the Crystal Palace, which was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851. 1、首先这句话是一个由which 引导的非限定性定语从句,这个定语从句的主句是一个一般过去时的简单句,结构为主系表,从句又是一个一般过去时的被动语态。 2、the most extraordinary building 这是形容词的最高级 3、of the nineteenth century 介词短语做后置定语 4、Be built for为...而建造 5、Of 1851是介词短语做后置定语修饰the Great Exhibition

The Crystal Palace was different from all other buildings in the world, for it was made of iron and glass. A is different from B用来表示A不用于B A is the same as B A和B 一样 In the world 是介词短语做后置定语用来修饰buildings 从句:be made of & be made from 区别 第一种方式:be made of可见原材料 Be made from 不可见原材料 第二种方式:be made of由一种材料制成 Be made from 由多种材料制成 It was one of the biggest buildings of all time
