Part II Reading Comprehension

Task 1

Hi, I’m Jeffrey Bezos. When I first had the idea of selling books on the Internet, I went to my boss and said to him, “You know, I’m going to start this company selling books online.” This was something that I had already been talking to him about, but then he said, “Let’s go on a walk.” And we went on a two-hour walk in Central Park in New York City.

After walking for a while, he said, “You know, this sounds like a really good idea to me, but it might be a better idea for somebody who didn’t already have a good job.” He let me think about it for 48 hours before making the final decision.

When I talked to my wife about this, she thought I was doing the right thing and said, “Look, you know I’ll always support you, whatever you want to do.” So it really was a decision that I had to make for myself.

I imagined myself at the age of 80 and saying, “Okay, now I’m looking back on my life. I hope that I have had as few regrets(遗憾) in my life as possible.” I knew that when I was 80 I was not going to regret having tried this. Task 2

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parent may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember thing, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. They work in the comfort of their homes, where they can also look after young children or elderly parents. They save time and money by not traveling to work. Their employers save, too, because they need less office space and furniture. Studies show that telecommuters change jobs less often. This saves employers even more money.
