Court Case

Jack Evans quarreled with his neighbor, Ellen Brown. Mrs. Brown had a dog. Jack did not like dogs. He wanted Mrs. Brown to give away or sell her dog but she refused.

Beijing Plans to Send Up Manned Spaceship

ZHUHAI——China will soon put a person into space and become the third nation in the world to have manned spaceflight, a top Chinese aerospace official said on November 5.

A manned launch was not far off. Vice President Hu Hongfu of China Aerospece Science Technology Corp(CASTC) told a news conference at the third Zhuhai Air Show.“It will not be long before Chinese astronauts can ride locally-made spaceships into space,”Hu said. The official gave no timetable but said it would happen“at the beginning of the 21st century.”

The former Soviet Union and the United States have been putting people into orbit since the early 1960s, but other nations have not considered the challenge worth following.

China has already built and sent up its own satellites for communications and weather forecasting. The new communication satellites would help to encourage the country’s broadcasting industry, Hu said.

But the company, which includes over 130 aerospace agencies, said the lifting ability and success rate of China’s space-launches were almost equal

in quality to those of other countries.

China would gradually close the distance between its country’s space industry and that of other nations. He added that they were willing to send up commercial satellites for Taiwan.

On China’s plan to send up manned space flights, Hu said China had made important development after the successful launch(发射)in November last year of the county’s fir st experimental spaceship, Shenzhou.“The whole project is in the research stage and a lot of work needs to be done,”Hu said.“We need to have more tests of the unmanned spaceship.”

China last year announced a four-step manned space flight plan, with the aim of setting up a space-station served by a spaceship traveling between two places.

Elijiah McCoy

Elijiah McCoy(1843—1929), a mechanical engineer worked with locomotives(火车头)and parts of locomotives. He invented a self-lubricating (加润滑油)machine. The machine makes it possible for machines to lubricate themselves—to put oil on themselves, that is.

McCoy, a black man who was the son of slaves, called his first lubricating machine a “Lubricator cup”. The cup allowed small drops of oil to do continuously onto the moving parts, keeping the machine in good running order.

As slaves, McCoy’s parents lived in Kentucky. They fled from the United States and settled in Canada. Elijiah was born in Colchester, Ontario, Canada, in 1843. McCoy’s father worked h ard in Canada. With pride, he sent Elijiaj to Edinburgh, Scotland. The boy was then fifteen years old.

Elijah McCoy attended to a school of engineering in Edinburgh. He studied mechanical engineering. Upon completing his studies, McCoy returned to the United States. No one wanted to hire a black man as a mechanical engineer. Finally MaCoy took a job as a fireman for the Michigan central Railroad.

McCoy shoveled(铲)coal and oiled the moving parts of the locomotive. This was hardly a job for a mechanical engineer! But McCoy gave some thought
