Although both American and British people can generally understand what each other is saying, sometimes it is necessary to explain some things. Some words or phrases could be taken in a wrong way.

One of the most noticeable differences is in the spelling of some words. For example, the word "color" in American English becomes "colour" in British English. Another example is the American word "theater" - in British English it becomes "theatre". Other words also have various spelling differences.

Although some words are spelled the same in the two forms of English, they may have different pronunciations. The accent is put on a different syllable in a word. British People pronounce their numbers differently from American people, especially the big numbers. They tend to add the word "and" between the numbers. American English-speaking people usually say 107 "one hundred seven ", while British English-speaking people say "one hundred and seven".

Sometimes when using the past tense of a verb, "ed" may be used in American English, while "t" is common in British English. An example is "dreamed" and "dreamt".

V ocabulary, of course, is a major difference at times. Because of the widespread use of American English, many British people are starting to use some American nouns to replace their British ones. So " lorry" becomes "truck". There are many other words that are being replaced as well. As is often the case, the same words have completely different meanings in the two forms of English. In British English "biscuit" is similar to "cookie", but in American English it is more like a dinner roll.

There are also many other minor differences between the two forms of English. It is interesting to note that many British English-speaking people adore American accents. Likewise, many

American English-speaking people love British accents.

56. How many differences between American and British English are mentioned in this passage?

A. Four.

B. Five.

C. Six.

D. Seven.

57. How do American English-speaking people pronounce the number "309"?

D. Thirty and nine.

58. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

C. "Lorry" in American English becomes "truck" in British English.

D. The difference of spelling in the two forms of English is noticeable.

There are only three important days in everyone's life and two of them are the ones that you don't need to worry about. Serigne Fallou Mbacke, a sage and man of God, who lived in Senegal (West Africa) between 1888 and 1968, used to say, "The day is today, it is the only day, the past is gone and will never come back and the future belongs to God. "

Harriet Beecher Stowe, 1811-1896, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, once said almost the same thing, "The past, the present, and the future are really one: they are today."

We all know that many people spend one half of their days regretting for the past, and the other half worrying about the future, leaving no time to enjoy the present when everything happens. How can such people get ahead in life? People all over the world have made countless discussions on the subject but it does not seem to make a difference. Most of us are still everywhere but in the present.

As the saying goes, if you do what everybody does, you will get what everybody gets! Make a difference, and live in the present. It will help you achieve more, become a better person and live a happier life, a life without anxieties or worries.

Today is all you have. There is no guarantee that you will live to see tomorrow and there is not a thing you can change about the past. Motivational speaker and author, Dennis Waitley puts it so beautifully in one of his books:

The past is a cancelled check, the future is a promissory note(期票), but the present, the present is liquid cash.

Always remember that today is a gift and that is the reason why it is called the present.

61. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. The future belongs to God.

B. No one can change the past.

C. Living in today will help you achieve more.

D. We are sure that we will live to see tomorrow.

62. Who described the three important days as "check, note and cash"?

A. The writer.

B. Serigne Fallou Mbacke.

C. Harriet Beecher Stowe.

D. Dennis Waitley.

63. Which of the following words can best describe the author's attitude towards "today"?

A. Unconcerned.

B. Negative.

C. Favorable.

D. Doubtful.

64. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Can you make a difference?

B. Are you wasting today?

C. Do you worry about the past?

D. Are you worrying about the future?

C

When Charles Keller learns of a child who is sick and weak, he’ll do whatever he can to make that kid feel as strong and powerful as a superhero.

After the successful businessman made a killing with an investment in the 1990s, Keller decided to allow himself to enjoy one of his favorite hobbies and bought a $65,000 Batmobile replica (复制版蝙蝠车). But the film aficionado wasn’t interested in just treating his two children to some rides in the vehicle fit for a Hollywood film set. He decided to use the car to lift the spirits of children battling serious illnesses. “I can’t cure cancer or any diseases,” Keller said. “But I can give them a moment, a night when kids and parents can enjoy the same thing.”

Since he purchased the Batmobile in 2009, Keller has invited a number of families with sick kids to take the car out for a spin. But it was in 2011, when a 4-year-old boy, Tony, who had just got a serious disease asked to go to the Batcave, Keller decided to take his mission to the next level. He transformed his 5,000-square-foot warehouse into Batman’s headquarters. Kenyon Antone, a 9-year-old boy battling a respiratory(呼吸的) illness, recently enjoyed a full Batman experience. The happy kid had the ho nor of pressing the green “button of courage” and gained entrance to Batman’s hideout where he slid down a pole, toyed with the superhero’s gadgets (小机械) and rode around in the Batmobile.

Is it hard to know how to react when your child hates reading, and even harder to figure out how to inspire children to read? Try these meaningful steps to help move your unwilling child toward a book-filled future.

Zero in on the child's interests. Before you do anything, take a step back and examine what interests, or excites your child. Knowing what interests him or her can help you find out what types

of books he or she may enjoy reading.

Start small. That your child likes to ride horses doesn't mean that he or she needs to start by reading The A -Z History of Horseback Riding; that may be frightening, especially for an unwilling reader. Instead, consider watching a horse race with your child. Talk about the jockeys, the scores, the owners and the trainers. If the topic of interest is useless, start small by finding a magazine related to the subject. Reading doesn't need to begin with a chapter book; many other texts and various types of magazines can be worthwhile for these situations.

Practice shared reading. Shared reading could involve taking turns reading pages, or you and your child silently reading the same book. Shared reading can vary depending on your child's age and needs. Most kids really want to spend time with their parents, but once children reach seven or eight years old, many parents don't consider reading together. They think it is only meant for preschool or early elementary school days. For the ideal shared reading experience, choose texts that are rich, interesting and sure to lead to discussion. Part of the "sharing" in shared reading involves talking about the book. Perhaps several of your child's friends and their parents can start a book club where the books read through shared reading are discussed in a welcoming environment. Besides, find a reliable, child-safe website where your child can post a review of that book.

Unwilling readers are often struggling readers, so creating safe and comfortable environments where fluent reading is modeled and where children are set up for success is the key. Though there is no easy answer, it can help your child improve his reading interests.

69. Why don't many parents consider reading with their children aged 7 or 8?

A. They fail to know their children’s interests.

B. They don't understand their children's needs.

C. They think it unnecessary to do so at this time.

D. They have not prepared well yet.

70. Finding a child-safe website can_______.

A. build up a good reading environment

B. help children improve book revi ews on the website

C. help children get some information from the Internet

D. inspire children to create a review of the book they read

71. According to the passage, in what order should we take the following steps to help the

young unwilling readers?

a. Set up a book club for children.

b. Check what children like first of all.

c. Lead children to start with something easy.

d. Spend some time reading with children.

A. a-c-d-b

B. b-c-a-d

C. b-d-a-c

D. b-c-d-a

72. We can conclude from the passage that________.

A. these steps have no focus or direction

B. these steps are not practical but easy to take

C. these steps aren't definitely reliable to operate

D. these steps are not magic but every little step helps

E

Back in 2006, as my father was dealing with advanced dementia(痴呆), our family faced a serious set of challenges. In addition to his health problems, we struggled with the lack of transparency(透明度) in what his health insurance(保险) plan covered, and with substantial out-of-pocket costs. We were often left with unexpected bills after appointments and medical procedures with little recourse(援助).

At times it felt as though the system was set up against us. On several occasions, his insurance company interfered with his treatment, dictating important decisions about his care rather than his doctors. And there was little we could do about it. Helping my mom navigate the process proved to be a frustrating and expensive burden on us. Throughout it all, I would often wonder how many other families were in the same boat struggling with rising health care costs and the worst insurance industry abuses.

Not long after my dad passed away, I first heard then Senator Obama speak about his own mother's struggles with health insurance and the need to pass health reform. I knew that I had to be a part of making that change. Since joining the Obama Administration in 2009, I've worked hard to help implement the Affordable Care Act. It's an honor to come to work every day at the White House to help make this landmark legislation a reality for millions of hard-working Americans who will benefit from the security and peace of mind of having health insurance.

73. Which of the following is NOT included in the writer's family challenges?

A. The problem of payment.

B. The problem of wealth plan.

C. The problem of unexpected costs.

D. The problem of health insurance plan.

74. What's the writer's attitude towards the old health insurance system?

A. Favorable.

B. Disapproving.

C. Doubtful.

D. Unconcerned.

75. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. The writer's father has died.

B. The writer's mother has died.

C. Obama's mother has died.

D. The Affordable Care Act has been passed.

写作一

What the illustration(picture) tries to convey is that we need be independent of the support from the outside and try to improve our own ability to survive.

As teenagers, we may be quite used to turning to our parents or teachers whenever we meet difficulties. Most probably, we can get the help we want and get through problems easily. But this doesn’t improve our own capability in problem-solving.

Time will come when we grow into adults and have to deal with things by ourselves. Without enough independence and ability, we are sure to be trapped in the cruelty of the reality.

写作二

Dear Mary,

I’ve received your e-mail and know that you are in a bad mood now. However, I don’t think it necessary for you to be so disappointed for failing twice. You see, we still face many more exams in the future even if we leave school. So try the following.

Collect the mistakes you made in the exams or in the exercises you did before, and analyze them carefully. Try to avoid making them again in the next exam. Make good preparations and be confident.

As we all know, failure is the mother of success. Let every failure be your stepping stone. If you try your best and don’t give up, you are sure to succeed in time.

Best wishes and good luck.

Yours,

Susan
