Abstract

We have constructed an embedded-atom potential for Fe by ?tting to both experimental and ?rst-principles results. The potential reproduces with satisfactory accuracy the lattice properties, surface energies and point defect energies for both BCC and the high tem-perature FCC phases of the metal. The potential was used in tandem with molecular-dynamics simulations to calculate the thermal expansion of both BCC-Fe and FCC-Fe,the phonon dispersion curves,mean-square displacements and surface relaxations of the ele-ment.In addition,we have studied self-di?usion of single adatoms on the BCC-Fe(100)surface at several temperatures. The migration energies and pre-exponential factors for three main di?usion mechanisms were determined and compared with available experimental data.We have found that the diagonal exchange di?usion process is energetically favored over the direct hopping mechanism and that its migration energy is close to the experimental value.Furthermore, the di?usion coe?cient associated with the diagonal exchange dif-fusion process is about an order of magnitude higher than those of the hopping and the non-diagonal exchange mechanisms.ó2006Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved.

1.Introduction

Atomistic simulations have developed in the last 25years into a large area of condensed matter and materi-als research [1].The description of interactions between atoms is very important in any atomistic simulation,rang-ing from ab initio electronic structure calculations to semi-empirical methods.First-principles techniques are highly accurate, but they are computationally expensive and are therefore used for relatively short time scales and few hun-dred atoms. In order to simulate larger systems and longer time scales parameter-based empirical methods such as the many-body potentials of the embedded-atom method (EAM)[2,3],Finnis–Sinclair [4]potentials and the sec-ond-moment approximation (SMA)of the tight-binding (TB)method [5–9]are found to be very e?cient. There is an increasing interest in deriving accurate and transfer-able potentials that could provide reliable results for physical properties and phenomena that can only be mod-eled correctly by using large systems and long simulation times.

In particular di?usion of adatoms on metal surfaces plays an essential role in many surface processes, such as heterogeneous catalysis, epitaxial crystal growth and sur-face reconstruction.Experimental techniques such as ?eld ion microscopy (FIM)and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM)are used to provide insights into surface di?usion [10].First-principles calculations and simulations can pro-vide accurate information on di?usion barriers of elemen-tary di?usion processes, but they are limited by enormous computational costs.Semi-empirical methods,on the other

hand, although less accurate, are able to simulate the dynamical character of di?usion, reveal di?erent elemen-tary processes(e.g.,hopping or adatom-substrate ex-change),and provide the migration energy barriers and pre-exponential factors associated with each di?usion mechanism.

It is well known that di?usion on BCC metal surfaces has not been studied as extensively as for FCC metal surfaces[10].Self-di?usion of Fe adatoms on the BCC-Fe(100)surface was studied experimentally using the STM[11]and the re?ection high-energy electron di?raction (RHEED)[12]techniques,but the dominant di?usion mechanism could not be identi?ed.From these mea-surements,the migration barrier and the corresponding pre-exponential factor of di?usion were determined. Furthermore,di?usion of Fe adatoms on W(100)and on Fe/W(100)surfaces was recently investigated by means of?rst-principles calculations[13]and a comparison of the activation energy barriers for hopping and exchange migration processes was made.

It should be noted that the TB-SMA method is com-pletely unreliable for treating BCC structures[14].On the other hand,BCC structures, and in particular iron, have been modeled within the EAM formalism[15–17].EAM potentials are often?tted to experimental data with no or little input from?rst-principles calculations. The recent trend, however,is to increase the volume of?rst-principles data in the?tting database and limit the experimental in-put,see e.g.Ref.[18]for a review.

In this paper our aim is to apply molecular-dynamics (MD)simulations to study self-di?usion on BCC-Fe(100) surface at various temperatures. Our goal is to investigate di?erent di?usion mechanisms and to determine the rele-vant migration energies and pre-exponential factors for each mechanism. To perform this study,we have con-structed a new EAM potential by?tting to measured quantities and?rst-principles calculations for both BCC-Fe(a-Fe)and the high-temperature FCC-Fe(c-Fe).The transferability of the new potential is tested by calculating zone boundary phonon frequencies, point defect energies and surface energies for both structures. The potential is used in tandem with molecular-dynamics simulations to determine the linear thermal expansion coe?cient, phonon dispersion curves, the temperature dependence of mean-square displacements(MSD),as well as the surface relaxa-tions.The simulated data are compared with available experimental and ab initio results.

requires three functions:V(r),q(r)and Fe qT.

The parametrization and?tting procedures applied for

constructing the Fe potential are similar to those used pre-

viously for FCC-Cu[19].In short, the potential is gener-

ated directly in the e?ective pair format[20].The pair

interaction function is represented by a superposition of

two Morse functions:

by normalizing q(r)to give q?1and using the mechanical

of experimental values of the cohesive energy E0and the

only q k,S k and the coe?cients q2,q3and q4are used as?t-ting parameters for Fe qT.

Formally, this parametrization of the potential func-tions includes24adjustable parameters. However, only 14of them are actually used for?tting to physical proper-ties of Fe.The values of q k and S k are chosen almost arbi-trarily so that the repulsive part of the binding curve of BCC-Fe be smooth and somewhat steeper than it is pre-dicted by the universal equation of state[21].Note that this parametrization scheme automatically guarantees an exact ?t to a0,E0and B.

The potential was optimized by minimizing the weighted mean squared deviation of selected properties of Fe from their target values. The experimental part of the?tting data-base included(besides a0,E0and B)the elastic constants C ij, the relaxed vacancy formation(E f

v

)and migration(E m

) energies, and the average surface energy of BCC-Fe.The ?rst-principles part of the database contained the energies of the BCC,FCC,simple cubic(SC)and diamond cubic (DC)structures as functions of the atomic volume. These energies were previously calculated by the linearized aug-mented plane wave(LAPW)method in the generalized gradient approximation[22].Additionally,the FCC phase was enforced to be elastically stable at0K.Since the LAPW and EAM calculations use di?erent reference energies, the ?t was implemented to the energy di?erences relative to the equilibrium BCC structure. The optimized values of the?tting parameters are listed in Table1and the potential functions are displayed in Fig.1.

In Table2we present selected properties of BCC-Fe cal-culated with the present EAM potential in comparison with measurements[23–25,30,26–29,31]and?rst-principles results[17,32–35].We note a very good agreement between properties predicted by the potential and the experimental

data.In particular, the phonon frequencies are found to be in good agreement with the experimental values [30],although they were not ?tted to,except for a slight under-estimation of transverse modes. The vacancy formation and migration energies and the surface energies also com-pare fairly well with the experimental data [26,29].For the surface energies, the present potential provides values that follow the trend usually found for BCC metallic sur-faces,that is,the smallest surface energy is that of the (110)face,while the largest one is for the (111)face.The experimental surface energy [26]represents an average value, which lies between the computed values for the (110)and (100)faces.The agreement with experimental and ?rst-principles data is comparable to that achieved by other EAM potentials [17],although not as good as for the angular-dependent potential [22].This emphasizes the importance of angular-dependent interactions in BCC-Fe.

In Table 3we present the same quantities as in Table 2

but for FCC-Fe.The experimental results are taken from Refs.[25,36–38].Reasonable agreement is observed be-tween the EAM predictions and experimental data for all properties.Despite the 10–20%underestimation of the sur-face energies [25],the potential correctly predicts the usual trend for FCC surfaces,i.e.the (111)face has the smallest energy, while the (110)face the largest one.We emphasize that, except for the ?rst-principles binding relation,no other properties of FCC-Fe were included in the ?t.Thus, all EAM calculations included in Table 3are pure predic-tions of the potential.

Table 4summarizes the equilibrium energies of alternate structures of Fe (relative to the equilibrium BCC structure)obtained by EAM and LAPW calculations. The agreement between the two calculation methods is quite reasonable. We note, however, that the binding relations for all four structures were included in the potential ?t,so the agree-ment was to be expected.

Overall, the new EAM potential demonstrates a good agreement with experimental and ?rst-principles data for

both?tted and predicted properties on BCC and even FCC-Fe.In contrast to previous EAM potentials[15–17], our potential is designed to represent FCC-Fe as a mechan-ically stable phase. This property enables atomistic simula-tions of not only a-Fe but also c-Fe within a common atomistic model. This provides a very useful model for sim-ulations of prototypical BCC–FCC interface boundaries, which play a key role in many materials systems ranging from steels to interfaces between conductor lines and di?u-sion barriers in integrated circuits. With respect to physical properties of the BCC phase, the accuracy of the present potential is comparable to that of[17].

It should be mentioned that the central-force description of interatomic forces underlying the EAM is not very accu-rate for BCC transition metals due to the presence of a covalent component of bonding. It has recently been shown that the incorporation of angular-dependent inter-actions signi?cantly improves the accuracy of atomistic potentials for Fe[22].This improvement, however, comes at a price of somewhat slower computer speeds. It is be-lieved that the EAM potential developed in this work can be useful in certain types of atomistic simulations where ac-cess to large systems or long simulation times are critical for an adequate representation of a physical process. Examples of such applications, along with further tests of the potential, are presented in the following sections.

3.Application of the potential:molecular-dynamics simulations

The EAM potential was used to determine Fe properties at?nite temperatures. We performed MD simulations in the canonical ensemble(NVT),using a system of4500 atoms arranged on BCC or FCC lattices. The simulation boxes contained20layers with225atoms each, with peri-odic boundary conditions in all three directions. For the integration of the equations of motion we used a time step of5fs and the Verlet algorithm.Thermodynamic averages were computed over50ps trajectories, after thermal equil-ibration runs of5ps.At each temperature, the lattice con-stant of the metal was found from the condition of zero pressure in the system. The atomic MSD were deduced from local-density pro?les along a direction perpendicular to the atomic layers. The phonon spectral densities and dis-persion curves were obtained by Fourier transforming the velocity autocorrelation functions for a given polarization at speci?c k vectors in the?rst Brillouin zone.We used a mesh of20k vectors along each symmetry direction and performed a cubic spline interpolation between the points.

H.Chamati et al./Surface Science600(2006)1793–18031797

Details of this computational procedure were reported else-where [39].

In Fig.2we present the linear thermal expansion of BCC-Fe as a function of temperature, derived from the present MD simulations,in comparison with experimental data [24].The computed values are in excellent agreement with the experimental ones.In Fig.3we show the temper-ature dependence of the lattice expansion of FCC-Fe,along with the experimental values [24].In this case, there is a slight underestimation compared to the experimental thermal expansion. It should be noted that thermal expan-sion was not included in the potential ?t.

Fig.4presents the calculated room temperature phonon dispersion curves for BCC-Fe along with the correspond-ing experimental values measured by inelastic neutron scat-tering [30].The agreement between the MD simulations and experiment is quite good, except for the discrepancy found along the [110]direction for the transverse modes T 1and T 2in the vicinity of the N point, which is about 1.4and 1.3THz,respectively.A disagreement of about 0.5THz was also found for the longitudinal mode close to the H point and in the middle of the H and P direction. The discrepancy between our calculation and experiment in the phonon dispersion curves in BCC Fe is partly due to the fact that our potential was constructed to ?t both FCC and BCC energies, unlike other EAM potentials that were ?tted to describe only the BCC lattice.Of course, the angular-dependent potential of Ref.[22]removes most of this discrepancy at the expense of creating some limitations in the speed of the method for doing MD simulations. In Fig.5,the computed phonon dispersion curves of FCC-Fe along high-symmetry directions at 1428K are plotted together with the corresponding experimental data measured by inelastic neutron scattering [36].We note that

the longitudinal modes are generally well predicted, except for the zone boundary frequencies at points X and L, where there is an overestimation of about1THz.On the other hand, there is a general slight underestimation of the transverse modes, except for the T2mode along the [110]direction in the vicinity of the point X.

The computed MSD of bulk atoms,(100)surface atoms and adatoms in BCC-Fe as functions of temperature are shown in Fig.6together with the corresponding experi-mental values for bulk atoms[40].Note that the results for surface atoms and adatoms correspond to the direction normal to the surface. The agreement between the calcu-lated and experimental MSD values for bulk atoms is very good.In the case of surface MSD,we note that they reveal an important anharmonicity above500K,and at T=1000K are about twice the respective bulk values. Concerning the MSD of adatoms,we observe a large anharmonicity above300K.At T=600K they are almost a factor of?ve larger than the respective bulk values. At temperatures above600K,the determination of the respec-tive MSD becomes di?cult due to di?usion by the ex-change mechanism between the adatom and the surface atoms.

Fig.7shows the temperature dependence of the com-puted surface and adatom relaxation for BCC-Fe(100)as a percentage of the bulk interlayer spacing. The relaxation for surface atoms is always positive and slightly increases with temperature. On the other hand, the adatom relaxa-tion is negative(aboutà15%)up to400K and becomes more important as the temperature increases. Thus the adatom performs an inward displacement towards the sur-face layer. This might be related to a lowering of the adsorption energy upon heating the sample. This feature is compatible with the appearance of exchange di?usion mechanism, with increasing temperature, which will be de-scribed in the next section.Table5summarizes the calcu-lated surface relaxations for the(100),(110)and(111) faces of BCC-Fe at2K and300K,along with the respec-tive experimental values determined by low-energy electron di?raction(LEED)and medium energy ion scattering (MEIS)[41–47].We remark that the computed surface relaxations increase with temperature. The agreement with experiment is better in the case of the(110)face[42,43], while the important experimental negative values for the relaxation of the(111)face are underestimated[44–47]. However,it should be noted that there is a

discrepancy Fig.8.The diagonal exchange di?usion mechanism of a Fe adatom(A)on the Fe(100)surface.

in the results obtained from the experimental measure-ments(LEED–MEIS).First-principles calculations[48] agree with the LEED experiments[44,45],denoting the rel-ative inaccuracy of the present potential in the description of the least packed(111)face.

4.Self-di?usion on Fe(100)

To study self-di?usion of single adatoms on the Fe-BCC(100)face,we put one adatom on the free surface of a constructed slab(box+vacuum)and performed MD runs of10–50ns(depending on the temperature)in the temperature range of600–950K.Below600K the number of di?usion events is too small to obtain any realistic statis-tics.The jump frequency f,associated with each di?usion mechanism was computed by the expression[49]

f?N

t

;e8T

where N is the number of events for a speci?c di?usion mechanism at a given temperature and t–the total simula-tion time.Furthermore, the di?usion coe?cient D for each di?usion mechanism was calculated from the respective jump frequency f using the expression:D?k f

d2

2z

;e9Twhere d is the jump distance,z is the dimensionality of the di?usion space(z=2in the present case)and k=4. In the above expression we have neglected the jump correlation factor, assuming that the successive jumps are uncorrelated, that is,the adatom performs a random walk.

From the analysis of adatom’s trajectories we have found that adatom self-di?usion on the Fe(100)face takes place mainly via three di?usion mechanisms:

(a)The diagonal exchange di?usion mechanism(Fig.8),

in which the adatom(A)moves from a fourfold hol-low site(Fig.8a)to replace a surface atom(S) (Fig.8b and c).The later moves to the fourfold site along the diagonal of the square(Fig.8d)and?nally becomes an adatom.

(b)The hopping(jump)di?usion mechanism(Fig.9),in

which the adatom(A)hops from a fourfold minimum energy site(Fig.9a)to a neighboring fourfold hollow site(Fig.9d)over the twofold bridge site(Fig.9b and c)between the two

sites.

Fig.9.The hopping di?usion mechanism of a Fe adatom(A)on the Fe(100)surface. 1800H.Chamati et al./Surface Science600(2006)1793–1803

(c)The non-diagonal exchange mechanism (Fig.10),in

which the adatom (A)moves from a fourfold energy minimum site (Fig.10a)to replace a surface atom (S).The latter moves to the neighboring fourfold hol-low site (Fig.10b and c)and becomes an adatom (Fig.10d).We have also observed other di?usion processes, such as long and correlated jumps or concerted exchange di?usion mechanisms involving two or more surface atoms.Unfor-tunately,the corresponding statistics of jumping is too poor to extract any meaningful value of D .

Fig.11displays the Arrhenius plot of the di?usion coef-?cient of Fe adatoms on the Fe(100)surface for the three di?usion mechanisms in the temperature range 600–950K.The computed values follow straight lines, conforming the Arrhenius relation

[50],and the corresponding experimental values[11,12].We note?rstly that the migration energies computed from the MD trajectories agree well with the corresponding static val-ues within the statistical errors.Secondly,we?nd that the diagonal exchange mechanism is energetically favored and that the di?usion coe?cient associated with it is about an order of magnitude higher than that for the two other mech-anisms within the studied temperature range(see Fig.11). The comparison of the calculated E m values with experimen-tal ones shows that the most favored process has a slightly higher value than the experimental ones(0.45eV[11]using STM and0.37eV[12]using RHEED).Finally, the com-puted D0values are about two orders of magnitude higher than the corresponding experimental value.

Part of this discrepancy might originate from the under-estimation of the vacancy migration energy by our EAM potential. We note that the angular-dependent potential of[22],although slower than EAM,gives a more accurate vacancy migration energy(0.74eV).In addition,D0is ob-tained by extrapolation across a wide temperature range and is obtained in both experiments and simulations with an error of roughly an order of magnitude.

Furthermore, the analysis of experimental data is based on the temperature dependence of the island density pro-vided the critical nucleus size‘‘i’’is known[11].Above the critical size of‘‘i’’atoms the islands are stable against dissociation. The experimental values in Table6have been deduced with the assumption of a critical size of i=1for temperatures below520K[11]and450K[12].Above these temperatures one observes a change in slope in the temper-ature dependence of the island density, which, according to the authors of Refs.[11,12],indicates a change of the nucleation critical size to i=3.Consequently,the determi-nation of the critical size is crucial for the derivation of dif-fusion parameters of adatoms.

Finally, the simulations have been performed in the tem-perature range600–950K,which is higher than the corre-sponding experimental ranges. In addition, several di?usion mechanisms have been investigated during the simulations, while the experiments did not show evidence of the di?erent mechanisms and consequently did not propose which one is the most favorable.Further theoretical and experimental investigations are required to clarify these discrepancies.

5.Conclusion

We have presented an EAM potential for Fe with parameters derived from?tting to both experimental and ?rst-principles results. The potential accurately describes bulk and surface properties of both the BCC and FCC phases of the element. In addition,it accurately predicts the thermal expansion, phonon dispersion curves,mean-square displacements and surface relaxations of the metal. None of these properties were used in the potential?t.We have studied self-di?usion of single adatoms on the BCC-Fe(100)surface by using the new EAM potential and molecular dynamics simulations in the temperature range 600–950K.The temperature dependence of the di?usion coe?cients for three di?usion mechanisms(hopping and two exchange processes)follows the Arrhenius behavior. The associated migration energies and pre-exponential fac-tors were deduced and compared with available experimen-tal measurements. The most important result is that the diagonal exchange di?usion process is energetically favored over the direct hopping mechanism. The migration energy associated with the favored mechanism is in good agree-ment with the experimental one, while there is a discrep-ancy for the pre-exponential factors. Finally,we found that the di?usivity by the diagonal exchange mechanism is about an order of magnitude higher than that by the di-rect jump mechanism and by the non-diagonal exchange mechanism. It should be very interesting to compare these ?ndings with surface di?usion in other BCC metals.

简称为MP I。
