A

One day my 13-year-old daughter told me that she was going to spend the afternoon at her friend Jesse’s house. I didn’t doubt it until I called Jesse’s number to remind L iz that it was her turn to walk the dog, and Jesse’s mom picked up the phone and said, ―I thought she and Jesse were

planning to be at your house.‖ It turned out that the two of them had decided to hang out at a coffee shop instead. When I questioned my daughter, she replied coldly, ―What’s the big deal? You’re such a psycho(精神变态者).‖

Can you say it is right or wrong for them to behave like that? Their changeable personalities leave you feeling angry and guilty at the same time. In fact, if your kids don’t annoy you from time to tim e, you’re not doing your job.

―There’s nothing wrong about being angry with your child,‖ Says Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D., author of The 10 Basic Principles of Good Parenting. ―Conflict is natural when your innocent, lovely child turns into an adolescent who can hardly tolerate (忍受) you. It’s part of the process of separation.‖ Kids insisted on their individuality with behavior to purposely drive you crazy. It’s their way of saying, ―I am my own person‖ -- but doing it in a context that’s safe and that has clear limits.

So when your little darling changes into a silent person who still expects meals, clothing, and transportation, don’t panic. Here’s how to handle some common problems without losing your temper or your self-respect.

56. It can be learned from the first paragraph that ________.

A. Jesse’s mother told a lie

B. the writer was too sensitive

the writer probably means that _________.

A. when you are doing a job, your kids shouldn’t annoy you

B. parents should be responsible for children’s bad behavior

C. parents shouldn’t tolerate their children’s bad beha vior

D. it’s understandable for kids to annoy their parents

58. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?

A. It’s right for parents to be angry with their children.

B. It’s allowed for children to do anything as they like.

C. It’s bad behavior for c hildren to drive their parents angry.

D. It’s normal for adolescents to go against the wishes of their parents sometimes.

Does solving a math problem give you a headache? Do you feel nervous when you sit a math exam? For most students, math can be tough but scientists have proved that math problems can actually trigger physical pain.

Scientists came to his conclusion with an in-depth experiment, which was published in the Public Library of Science One journal. They began by finding out how much participants fear math. Those involved were asked a series of questions such as how they feel when they receive a math textbook or when they walk into a math lesson.

Based on their answers, participants were divided into groups. One group was made up of people who were particularly afraid of math and participants in the other group were more comfortable with the subject.

Both groups were then given either math tasks or word tasks. When a math task was going to

come next, a yellow circle would appear but when a word task was soon to come, a blue square would be shown.

Using a brain-scan machine, scientists noticed that whenever people from Group One saw a yellow circle, their brain would respond in a way similar to when their body is feeling pain. It was like the pain they would feel, for example, if they burnt their hand on a hot stove. But they reacted less strongly when they knew that they would be faced with a word task.

However, scientists saw no strong brain response from people in the second group.

Math can be difficult, and for those with high levels of mathematics-anxiety (HMA), math is associated with tension, apprehension and fear. ―When you are really thinking about the math problems, your mind is racing and you are worrying about all the things that could go wrong,‖ explained Ian Lyons fro m University of Chicago, US, leader of the study. ―The higher a person’s anxiety of a maths task, the more he activated brain regions associated with threat detection, and the experience of pain.‖

More interestingly, the brain activity disappeared when participants actually started dealing with the math tasks. ―This means that it’s not that math itself hurts; rather, the anticipation of math is painful,‖ Lyons said.

Based on the study, scientists suggested that things could be done to help students worry less and move past their fear of math, which might mean they perform better in tests.

63. In the first stage, scientists ask participants some questions to____________.

A. see whether math hurts.

B. find out how much they fear math

C. observe how their brain response.

D. test their endurance of pain

64. The underlined word ―the an t icipation of math‖ is closest in meaning to_______________.

A. the attempt of learning math

B. the motivation to work out math problem

C. the effort to understand math

D. the act of thinking about math

65. What can be concluded from the experiment?

A. The anticipation of math has no relation to students’ confidence in math.

B. Moderate mathematic anxiety promotes students’ academic performance.

C. Effective s olutions have been worked out to lower students’ anxiety of math.

D. Physical pain caused by HMA disappears in the process of doing math problem.

It was time to break free.

I needed to run away and the Bloomsburg Fair was the best place to go.

I don’t know if you can call it running away when it was only an hour away from my home. But once I entered the fairgrounds, I crossed over into another world. The loudspeaker offered background music over the sounds of people of people talking, bargaining and food sellers yelling for your attention.

I belonged here. I didn’t know if I had it in my blood or not, but I always wanted to have a small food stand and travel in my off season from fair to fair selling goodies. Perhaps one day. It certainly wasn’t a priority in my life, Perhaps it should be.

After I was there a while, I needed to get away to a quiet spot. Most of the time, I could find that anywhere the farm animals were kept. They needed the quiet. So I went there to find peace with the cows, goats, horses, pigs and yes, the turkeys. You'd think being this close to "Thanksgiving", they'd be a little scared, but they were not.

It was in the dairy barn(仓库)where I found peace this time. I so admired the young folks who tended to farm animals. I thought they had a greater appreciation for life. They participated in it firsthand. I once watched a young farmer help bring a baby cow into the world.

My favorite scene was to come across a young cowboy lying in the hay asleep among the cows that had settled down for a rest. There, with his heads in a small soft spot alongside his favorite cow, I had seen him in a much deserved sleep. Perhaps better at rest there than in his own bed.

I had the pleasure of speaking with a young teenage farm girl that day.

"You look so comfortable," I said to her.

"Oh I am," she said. "Life makes it comfortable for me."

"You mean being a farm girl?"

"No, Life! That's the name of my cow," she said, smiling as she gently patted the cow's side.

"I thought they called cows Betsy and Elsie. Why did you call her Life?"

―I discovered life again here. It was the only meaningful name that came to mind. I had been raised in the big city and really hated it. Then we moved to the country, running away from it. I think my parents called it a mid-life crisis," she said, laughing.

"Oh, I can understand that. I've been in one since birth," I said.

"It was on the farm that I learned to love life again. I was there when Life was born. It was so exciting. My whole outlook on the world changed. So I named her Life. Now, I can say I really love 'Life'," she said.

"How amazing! I write stories and I am always trying to get people to enjoy life, to wake up each day expecting the best from it. But they all too often go to bed with so much bad stuff in their soul, and on their mind, that they wake up feeling bad and expect it to only get worse from there. All too often it does, just because that's all they choose to see in that otherwise perfectly beautiful day," I told her.

"That's too bad. They need to see a cow born, a chicken hatch. I guess they need to wake up early and hug Life!" she said, laughing.

"When was the last time you hugged Life?" she asked me.

"I am sorry to say even I have had trouble doing that lately," I said.

"Come here!" she said.

Then standing up and stepping aside, she said, "Go ahead…hug Life!"

I paused for a moment and dropping all thoughts of looking silly, I did. I hugged a cow.

Managers should always have an exit strategy. Because if you receive a promotion or new position, you'll need to have a plan in place for your departure---including a solid suggestion for someone to fill your role. And that means you need to be preparing your employees for leadership now.

But, developing your employees into leaders isn't an instant shift so it's important to start now. In my experience as a manager, I've found that these strategies are vital to start developing the skills that will benefit you and your employees.

1. Teach Them to Network

It's important to teach your employees how to effectively network as soon as possible. You can start small, within your own company, even when there are company events e.g. sponsored meals, or after-work events, encourage your leaders-in-training to go and more importantly, to branch out beyond conversations with the co-workers they already know.

Then, as they grow more comfortable, you can include them community--and industry-wide events ---and eventually, even send them in your place to represent your company. When they progress into leadership roles, they'll already have valuable contacts, plus the people skills needed to succeed.

2. Give Them the Right Experience

As you dole out projects and assignments, give some thought to the unique duties you have as a manager. These are the skills that your employees may not be familiar with---but should, if they aim to move up within the organization. Then, find ways for your employees to start gaining experience in those areas.

The same can be applied to other duties that your team may not have much experience in--- like running meetings and overseeing projects. Since these tasks typically include managing other employees, the leader will have to make sure the team stays on task, meets objectives, and works collaboratively---all skills that are essential for a manager.

3. Allow Them to Struggle a Little

When an employee needs help with a task, he or she typically comes to you, so you can either take over or provide the resource that will help accomplish the task. And in most cases, fulfilling that managerial duty is perfectly fine. But when you're coaching your employees to become leaders, I've found that it's beneficial to push them to figure out how to get what they need--on their own.

Of course, this doesn't mean you can — or should — sit back and do nothing to help. But little by little, let your employees take on more responsibility. Eventually, they'll learn how to get what they need even without your help.

4. Create an Ownership Mentality

Creating an ownership mentality starts with trusting your employees and giving them the authority to make certain decisions, This can also mean giving them a little personal time to work on a side project that they think will increase sales. When you make your employees feel like an integral part of the company, they will naturally rise to the occasion and emerge as leaders.

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求,写一150词左右的英语短文。

China news, Shanghai, October 8 – According to a random survey covering 3,800 elementary and secondary school students in Shanghai, the two groups of students have very different career outlooks. Most pupils dream of starting their own business after graduation, while high school students long for an ordinary job.

---It’s so cool to be your own boss, and you can decide when to start a day’s work, said Jay(not his real name), a fifth grade pupil. The hottest topic between him and his classmates is usually about their future careers, and many of them have already had a thorough plan for the future. Jay says that he will start his business with his friends in a few years after graduating from college, when he will have already accumulated some money.

High school students’ choices tend to be more reasonable. Some of them say they will take an ordinary full-time job, while many of them also appreciate the freedom of freelancing: however, most of them will think twice before starting their own businesses, as it is extremely difficult to start a career from scratch.

Brain implant lets man with paralysis move and feel with his hand. A brain implant has restored movement and a sense of touch in the hand of a man with a severe spinal cord injury.Patrick Ganzer at Battelle Memorial Institute in the US and his colleagues have developed a brain-computer interface(BCI)that(21)______(allow)28-year-old Ian Burkhart to grasp and feel objects again. Burkhart has a severe upper spinal cord injury and has complete paralysis in his hands and legs,(22)______ can move his elbows and shoulders. He had a brain implant inserted in2014as part of research aiming to restore movement in(23)______right arm. The BCI uses the implant(24)______(record)brain activity that is sent to a processor that decodes these signals into movements, which in turn feed in to bands around the forearm which electrically activate his hand muscles. “We’ve made a lot of progress in the last six years:he can play[the video game]Guitar Hero, swipe a credit card and do about20different hand grips,”says Ganzer. But because Burkhart had no sensation in his hands,he previously had no sense of touch or pressure when(25) ______(grasp)objects,and if blindfolded, was not able to detect small objects such as a pencil. The researchers discovered that(26)______Burkhart’s hand cannot feel anything, the brain implant stills registers a faint sensory signal when he touches an object. They boosted this signal by incorporating a band around the bicep which vibrates when Burkhart’s hand receives sensory information. As a result,Burkhart is able to detect objects by touch alone. The BCI is also able to detect different levels of touch and adjust the strength of Burkhart’s hand movements depending on the object–a light grasp, for example, for a paper cup. The researchers believe it is the first BCI(27)______can simultaneously restore movement and touch. When the brain implant was inserted,it(28)______(intend)solely for controlling movement, but the(29)______(add) touch is possible because there is some overlap(30)______the sensory and motor areas in Burkhart’s brain, says Ganzer.
