In 2008, I was just finishing my first year of design school. And someone told me to put everything I made over the year on a table and stand next to it. Some professors, most of whom I had never met before, would give me their opinions of it. I started to get really nervous, because for a long time, no one said anything about it. It was just completely silent. And then one of the professors started to say, “Your work gives me a feeling of joy.”

Joy? But how did that come from the thing on the table next to me? I couldn’t stop thinking about it and it took me 10 years to understand the relationship between the physical world and the mysterious (神奇的)emotion called “joy.” Later I discovered that they were connected and the physical world could be a powerful resource in creating happier and healthier lives. And I found that when psychologists (心理学家)used the word “joy”,they meant it was an experience of positive emotion lasting for a short time — one that made us smile and laugh. That feeling was one of the ways in which scientists measured joy. Joy was about good feelings right now.

Where did joy come from? I started asking everyone I knew, and even people I just met on the street, about the things that brought them joy. "What brought you joy? When did you see it? What color was it? Did anyone else see it?” And after a few months, I noticed that there were certain things that started to come up again and again. They were things like cherry blossoms, bubbles, hot air balloons, fireworks and so on. We didn’t even need to know what they werefor, and we felt like we were celebrating things, too. These things weren’t joyful for just a few people. They were joyful for e veryone. And seeing them all together gave me this hopeful feeling that couldn’t be described.

I noticed something as I walked around and I began noticing little moments of joy everywhere I went.

A. The writer felt nervous because he was asked some difficult questions.

B. The physical world could help create happier and healthier lives.

C. The writer didn’t like the professors.

D. The writer cannot find joy anywhere.

( )3. From this passage, what do you think of the writer?

A. He is not clever.

B. He designs things badly.

C. He likes thinking.

D. He is afraid to talk to people. ( )4. What is the main idea of the last two paragraphs?

A. Joy is in our life.

B.Having joy is having health.

C. Joy is good for everyone.

D.Joy is an important emotion.

Learning a new language is quite boring, especially if you have very few resources or there are very few people whom you can talk with to practice the language you are learning. It may get harder if you have to study new characters. However, you can make it really fun.

I am recently trying to learn Korean and it is difficult. It’s not very common to meet someone whom you can practice with. My sister gave me a great idea to make it more interesting. Read or sing along to a song or two.

There are many advantag es if you do this. First, it’s an excellent way to familiarize (使熟悉)yourself with the words. It may take a while but you won’t notice the time because you’re enjoying singing. For example, I am studying Korean and Tm now pretty good at Korean and can probably read any Korean text. Besides, my reading speed becomes faster and faster since I usually sing along to my favorite Korean pop songs.

Also, since the songs would probably have complete sentences, you’ll be able to learn how they structure their thought s. And there are most likely a lot of very common words included in the songs you are singing. Compare them to your resources or learning materials and you’ll have a better understanding on how they form sentences or complete thoughts.

As is mentioned, practice is the key. If you keep doing it,you’11 finally notice yourself read fester. And your vocabulary will grow since you’re practicing again and again. I usually sing three or more songs per day and it does help me a lot with my learning. Now I can also understand what Tm reading. Repetition helps in keeping in mind the knowledge and it is the best way to learn a new language. Patience is very important too. Don’t expect you’11 learn something immediately in a couple of hours. Give it months and you’ll do it very nicely. Stay focused, stick to it and have fun.

“Click!” That’s the sound of safety. That’s the sound of a seat belt (安全带)locking in place. Seat belts save lives and that’s a fact. That’s why I don’t drive anywhere until mine is on tight (紧的).Choosing to wear your seat belt is as simple as choosing between life and death. Which one do you choose?

Think about it. When you’re driving a car, you may be going 60 mph or faster. That car is running down the road. Then somebody ahead of you puts on his or her brakes (刹车).You don’t have time to stop. Your car hits the other c ar. Your car is going 60 mph. Now it has suddenly stopped. Your body, however, is still going 60 mph. What’s going to stop your body? Of course it is our seat belt.

Do you like to give your money away? Probably not. And when you don,t wear your seat belt, you are asking to give your money away. That’s because kids are required to wear seat belts in every state in America. If you’re riding in a car, and you don’t have a seat belt on, the police can give you or your driver a ticket. Then you will have to give money to the city. Wearing a seat belt does not make you unable to be hurt or killed. You can still get hurt or killed while wearing your seat belt. London’s Chinese community dates back to the 18lh century, when a small number of Chinese sailors (水手)moved to the city to work in Limehouse, East London. As time went on, other Chinese people came to this area and Limehouse began to be known as Chinatown. However, London’s Chinese community remained very small for many years: at the start of the 20th century, there were just about 500 Chinese people in Britain.

After the Second World War, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs and came to London. As Limehouse had been almost destroyed during the war, they lived in a different area — a part of central London near Leicester Square. This area is now what Londoners call Chinatown.

At first, the new immigrants (移民)found it difficult to get jobs. In the 1950s, however, a small Chinese restaurant opened in London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful! Suddenly, Chinese restaurants and takeaways started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants now found that they had too much! They worked as cooks, managers or waiters. Most of them enjoyed their lives and asked their friends and relatives to join them from overseas.

As time went by, London’s Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the original restaurant workers studied and worked very hard. When people think of bees, they usually think of the sweet taste of the honey that bees make. However, some people may not know that bees help us in more ways than producing honey. Unluckily, today there aren’t as many honeybees as there were a few years ago.

What’s happening to the honeybees?

When scientists realized that the honeybee population was declining (下降),they tried to find out why. They think there might be several reasons for this. They have found that honeybees are not as healthy as they were in the past. More honeybees are getting diseases. Scientists have also learned that some areas where bees live have been turned into farms. How-ever, one main cause is the use of pesticide (杀虫剂) on farms. When honeybees come to pollinate (授粉)the plant that has pesticide in it, the honeybees take it all in, which can cause the honeybees to die.

We need bees.

Many of the vegetables and fruits that humans and other animals eat can’t gr ow without the help of honeybees. Honeybees carry pollen (花粉)among plants: Without the help of honeybees, we would not have so many plants we depend on for food. Bees pollinate fruit trees, vegetable plants, and crops which cows and other farm animals eat. Many people may not realize it, but honeybees are important to every living thing.

How humans can help.

There are some things humans can do to help honeybees. People can grow flowers and plants that honeybees like, such as cabbage, sunflowers, and strawberries. People can also build beehives (蜂房) so that more bees will live in their area. In fact, some schools have started beekeeping programs to teach students about bees and to provide homes for bees that pollinate local plants.

Ian Snyder, a studen t who takes part in a beekeeping program in Pennsylvania, has the right idea. “It’s important to keep the bees alive so they can pollinate everything,” Ian said. “It’s part of the cycle of life.”

A. Many kinds of animals would live better in the world.

It was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after the storm, though, was beautiful: bright sunshine, a blue sky and a calm sea.

My father invited my sister and me to go fishing with him. I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go all the same. I’m so glad about what I did.

Being on the boat, we found there was something meters away. When moving nearer, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. We couldn’t believe it —there weren’t any whales along the coast. The storm must have driven them there, where the sea water was so dirty that nothing could live in it.

The little baby whale was stuck (卡住)and could not move. The mother went down into the water and came up suddenly, making big waves. “She’s trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side,” my father said. At this point, my father moved our boat to the other side and, heading the boat towards the baby whale, pushed it gently. With our several gentle pushes the baby whale turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right beside its mum. They made great efforts to swim towards the deep sea but failed and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them to the sea. Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe and to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes. Once they hit their first part of clean water from the sea, the mum gave us a wavewith her tail and then they swam into the deep sea.

While mothers look forward to the Mother’s Day, sellers expect the holiday. That’s because the money spent on presents adds up to bi llions of dollars, making Mother’s Day the third largest retail holiday in the US. Even better? The spending keeps increasing year after year.

Goods like rings and necklaces top the list with a $4.6 billion expected spend, while trips come in at a close second of $4.4 billion. An impressive $2.6 billion will go towards buying flowers. Other purchases include clothing ($2.1 billion), electronics ($2.1 billion), and personal services.

Though motherhood has been celebrated across the world, this official US holiday is mainly due to the hard work of Anna Jarvis. The Philadelphia teacher came up with the idea to honor the sacrifices (牺牲)moms make for their families. The first celebration held at a Methodist church was such a success that Jarvis decided to let the holiday appear on the national calendar. To achieve her goal, she started a nationwide writing campaign to newspapers and lawmakers about the importance of a special day to honor mothers. While many states, towns, and churches had accepted the holiday, it took another two years before the second Sunday in May was officially set as Mother’s Day by President Woodrow Wilson.

However, Jarvis’s wish of the celebration, which included wearing a white carnation (康乃馨)and visiting one’s mother, was never fully realized. Once the holiday became official, it was not long before sellers got the chance to market their products. Completely dissatisfied, she spent years speaking out and fighting against the “profiteers (投机商)”. By the time she die4 Jarvis had disowned (与……断绝关系) the holiday.

While Mother’s Day has since become increasingly commercial, most moms would choose to spend quality time with their families and take a break from daily chores over expensive store-bought things. Here’s the story of my growth over the past year. If anyone is encouraged by this, that’s wonderful.

I’d been stuck as this really uneasy (心神不安的),under-confident and just scared individual for years and years and years. Since childhood I’d been like this, and I’d been used to a life where I’d be afraid of everything.

But then it all started changing. Something clicked, and in over a period of 6 months I finally managed to hold on to one of my diets, and finally succeeded in losing 90 lbs.

This taught me that I could change myself. One single time,I heard about a public speaking contest going on at my university, and for the first time, I actually managed to get the courage to go there. It was a feeling of being free. For the first time I was able to share my story, and able to do it in front of dozens of people judging me, and suddenly all the fears about peaking publicly started to disappear.

This taught me that I could get rid of (摆脱)my fears.

It was from that point cm that my road to change went from a mess to a full-on empty highway, and I started changing quickly.

Using the fact that I could change, and that I could get rid of my fears, I started working on them one by one. My fear of greeting strangers, my fear of talking to strangers, my fear of asking simple questions I should “already know”,my fear of hanging out with people, my fear of not knowing things, my fear of being myself my fear of being “strange”.. All of them disappeared.

And I still continue t o progress to this day. I’ve never stopped.

YouTube is a website that everyone has heard of. Perhaps most people even use it, and it’s a form of both entertainment and social media. But can we use YouTube to help us learn a foreign language?

Of course there arc channels which produce video classes to help us learn, but what about the standard daily vlogs (视频博客)or videos about clothes? Can they be valuable learning resources too?

In my opinion, they are a way of being able to experience the way in which real people talk. This can make a good change from the listening exercises we hear in class, which aren’t always reliable. For example, many English speakers have different accents (口音)or use lots of colloquial (口语的)words and phrases —have you ever heard themsay “all right, guys” as a greeting in a listening practice? Some English learners don’t have the chance to talk to native speakers in person, so surely YouTube videos can offer a valuable choice.

To add to this, there is more for people to learn a language than simply words, phrases and grammar. It’s also about the culture of the language’s speakers. As YouTube increases in popularity, it also offers a chance to learn about popul ar culture. As well as the channels themselves that are popular, through watching them we can learn about a country’s fashion trends (趋势)and simply how people spend their daily lives.

However, some people would argue (争辩)that listening to YouTubers and watching popular video games will only make us M into bad habits. Not only do they often use colloquial words, but sometimes their speech is even grammatically incorrect. Why would we want to risk learning to speak in a way that isn’t even right? Then again, others say that this is the way that people really talk, so we should get used to it.

It is still under discussion whether YouTube can help with language learning. But I think there is no doubt that it is still a great way of entertainment!

It was past midnight when I saw an email that told me I had been accepted into the International Summer School at Oslo University, Norway. I woke up everyone at home to tell them that I would be one of the five hundred students visiting this beautiful Scandinavian country for ten weeks on a foil scholarship (奖学金).My parents were happy but worried about how I’d manage on my own in a foreign land for the first time.

The day when I left my country was full of excitement and nervousness. I slept through the long flight and woke up to the announcement that we had come to Oslo Airport. Now, if I were in India, I would have taken a taxi to my destination, but my online research had taught me that in Oslo, taking a taxi would be considered as a wasteful way. So I took the subway to the university. Upon my arrival, I was told that my room had been arranged and my roommate had lived in. My roommate was a Chinese student, who became my first friend. Though it was sunny outside, I was tired. I realized it was close to midnight.

Sunsets during summer are very late in Norway.

I would study a course on International Development and the class had students from 20 different countries. I worked with

my classmates on group projects. Teamwork brought us closer as a unit. We realized we shared similar dreams about our fixture. Oslo is a city that has an excellent public transport system. One can get to a sandy beach or forest within minutes. In our free time, we went for hikes and I realized how much I loved being outdoors. I learnt to read maps and picked up Norwegian. The hardest part was getting used to eating dinner at 5:00 p.m.

“You don’t have any friends. No one does. You are your only true friend.” It was what my dad told me when I was young. “If that was true, how could I be my only friend, and how could I possibly be happy?” I wondered.

It was only later in life that I learned how true my dad’s words were. There comes a point in everyone’s life when they feel completely lonely. Friendshi ps can hardly last forever, and people can change over time. It’s shocking if some people you thought you knew show their true nature. Although you don’t want to believe it, people will show they cannot always be dependent on throughout our lives.

Certainl y, there are true friends in our lives. There are people who will support you if you’re in trouble, and that’s a good thing. It’s also good to be the person others can depend on. However, as I discovered in school and even now in adult life, there will be times when you feel that no one is on your side. As my dad tried to show, loneliness is a part of the human experience. However, loneliness doesn’t have to be a dark mark in your life. In some ways, it was during the loneliest times of life that I was able to show my true value and achieve my dreams.

It is when we are feeling completely lonely that we sometimes find the strength to stand on our own two feet. By learning to value ourselves and to be our own true friend, we will realize thatin our life, when we are forced to walk alone, we can deal with it. Friendships certainly make our life better. However, even in the darkest moments, we can use our own light to find the way.

Take care of yourself. Listen to your own heart and voice. Most of all, try to be proud, confident and happy, because you

deserve all of them.

( )1. What did the writer realize later in life?

B. It’s not easy to know one’s true nature.

A. She benefited a lot from her friends.

B. She hopes to have some true friends.

D. She felt very lonely in school.

( )3. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

A. Learn to study alone.

B. Believe in yourself and depend on yourself.

( )4. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Loneliness Is Not Always Bad.

上海中考英语阅读回答问题技巧讲义

上海市初中毕业生统一学业考试英语试卷 阅读部分 F. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): ( 12分) 08年 English is an important international language, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to learn. Many experts have tried to make English easier to learn —but they weren’t always successful. In 1930, Professor C.K. Ogden of Cambridge University invented Basic English. It had only 850 words (and just eighteen verbs) and Ogden said most people could learn it in just thirty hours. The problem was that people who learned Basic English could write and say simple messages, but they couldn’t understand the answers in ‘real’ English! It was also impossible to explain a word if it wasn’t in the Basic English word list. R.E. Zachrisson, a university professor in Sweden, decided that the biggest problem for learners of English was spelling, so he invented a language with the name Anglic. Anglic was similar to English, but with much simpler spelling. ‘Father’ became ‘faadher’, ‘new’ became ‘nue’ and ‘years’ became ‘yeerz’. Unluckily, Anglic never became p opular. In the age of international communication through the Internet, who knows what will happen? ... a new form of English might appear. A large

When the car "sees" an obstacle(障碍物), it sends this information to a data center and receives instructions, However, it will be some time before it sends and receives this information. With this kind of lag, the cars might crash because they don't receive instructions in time. With 5G, this lag will be greatly lowered, making the cars safer. 5G could also be used to power the internet of things (IoT), that is, a large online network that connects all things and people. Fast internet speeds will be the key to developing this technology. The IoT could be used in a lot of ways. For example, with IoT, your refrigerator could automatically (自动地) place an order online for eggs when it finds that there are no eggs left inside. (1)Which city was 5G tested for the first time? A. 【英语】英语中考英语阅读理解及答案1 一、初三英语阅读理解(含答案详细解析) 1.阅读理解 What do you see when you look at abstract (抽象的)art? Can you understand it? Does it look like anything? Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or sculpt things exactly like they looked. They didn't want their art to be realistic(现实的). They were more interested in basic shapes and colours. Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours (his "blue period"). Later, he used more red and pink colours (his "rose period"). Many of his other paintings are called "cubist (立体派的)" because they are made of painted squares. After a long time, Picasso's paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and things using strange shapes. His work was so strange that many of his workmates didn't understand it. Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes, and patterns to paint his subjects. His paintings also used strong colours to express feelings. Other artists like the surrealists (超现实主义画家),were interested in subconsciousness (潜意识). Painters like Breton and Magritte used many symbols in their work. The meaning or subject of their work wasn't always clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures that looked like dreams. There are still many abstract artists around the world.
