I have a younger brother. To me , he is a fourteen-year-old kid named Joe, with blond hair and blue eyes. To others, he is different. Where I see a kid who just needs a lot more attention, others see a mentally disabled boy, a kid who cannot walk or talk or think for himself. I see someone who just makes daily routine a bit less routine. Others see an annoyance, a bother.

This is not to say that I have never felt resentful(怨恨的) toward Joe. He is my brother, and with that comes responsibility. “Gina, could you stay in tonight and watch your brother?” “Gina, do me a favor and feed him dinner and change his diaper(尿布) later, please?”“Could you come home right after school today and get Joe off the bus?”These are phrases that I have heard since I was twelve. And sure, they have made me resent my brother to a certain extent. I would think: that’s not fair! Everyone else can stay after and be a member of this club, or get extra help from that teacher. Or, all my friends

are going out tonight, why can’t I? And, how come I have to feed him? He is not my son! However, the small amount of resentment I feel toward my brother is erased a thousand times over by what I have learned from him. Besides making me responsible from a young age, and helping me be more accepting of all kinds of people, he has taught me to be thankful for what I have.

I know that there are moment in my life that I should cherish and that Joe will never experience. He will never laugh so hard that he cries. He will never feel the glory of a straight-A report card. He will never comfort a best friend crying on his shoulder. And he will never know how much his family love him.

Because he will never know, it is up to me to know, every second , how lucky I am. It is up to me to realize that life should be lived to its fullest, and that you should always, always be grateful that God, or whoever are the powers that be, gave you the ability to live your life the way you were meant to live it.

21.We know from the first paragraph that Gina's brother .

A. causes trouble to neighbors

B. pays more attention to others

C. lives with mental disability

D. considers daily routine a bother

22.If Mother asks Gina to look after her brother now, what will she probably answer? A. I'm afraid not. B. No problem!

C. It depends.

D. It's not fair!

23.The passage intends to tell us that we should .

A. value the glory of success

B. appreciate what life gives us

C. comfort unfortunate people

D. treasure meaningful moments

It's rare that you see the words "shyness" and "leader" in the same sentence. After all, the common viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent networkers and that those shy people are not. A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership. Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40 percent of leaders actually are quite shy—they're just better at adapting themselves to situational demands. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies".

Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking, shy people take a cautious approach to chance. Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can lear n what to say. Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically(内在地) motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard.

Being shy can also bring other benefits. Remember being in school and hearing the same kids contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in? Then what happened? Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Jo hnny actually talking. This

is how shy people made good use of their power of presence:they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image.

Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers aren't modest, but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations. Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, they're more comfortable working with littl e information and sticking to their inner desires. Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent. Don't believe me? Maybe you'll believe Albert Einstein, who once said, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's that I stay with problems longer." Obviously, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person.

The myth that shy people are less effective leade rs than their outgoing fellows is just a misunderstanding. Make wise use of your personality strengths to lead your business no matter what side of the range you fall on.

24.We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ___________.

A. shy people are sensitive to rewards

Astronauts on shorter shuttle missions often work very long days. Tasks are scheduled so tightly that break times are often used to finish the day’s work. This type of schedule is far too demanding for long missions on the International Space Station(ISS). ISS crew members usually live in space for at least a quarter of a year. They work five days on and two days off to mimic the normal way they do things on Earth as much as possible. Weekends give the crew valuable time to rest and do a few hours of housework. They can communicate with family and friends by email, Internet phone and through private video conferences. While astronauts cannot go to a baseball game or a movie in orbit, there are many familiar activities that they can still enjoy. Before a mission, the family and friends of each

ISS crew member put together a collection of family photos, massages, videos and reading material for the astronauts to look at when they will be floating 370 kilometers above the Earth. During their mission, the crew also receives care packages with CDs, books, magazines, photos and letters. And as from early 2010, the Internet became available on the ISS, giving astronauts the chance to do some “web surfing” in their personal time. Besides relaxing with these more common entertainments, astronauts can simply enjoy the experience of living in space.

Many astronauts say that one of the most relaxing things to do in space is to look out of the window and stare at the universe and the Earth. Both the shuttle and the ISS circle the planet several times each day, and every moment offers a new view of the Ea rth’s vast mass and oceans.

28.What does the word “mimic”in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

B. copy

C. change

D. lose

29.Which of the following best describes the families of the astronauts on the ISS?

A. They are excited and curious.

B. They are impatient and annoyed

C. They are worried and upset.

30.In the final paragraph, the author shows that astronauts __________.

A. get more pleasure in space than on the Earth

B. find living in space a bit boring and tiring

C. love to see the Earth from space

D. regard space life as common

A. spend their free time in space

D. work for longer missions in space

Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, I also had to deal with my parents’ painful separation, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded town.

When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony had to be sold. I was heartbroken and terribly lonely. I couldn’t eat or sleep and cried all the time. Finally, realizing how much I missed my pony, my father bought me another horse, Cowboy.

Cowboy was without doubt the ugl iest horse in the world. But I didn’t care. I loved him beyond all reasons.

I joined a riding club. When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse was judged by appearance, we were quickly “shown the gate”. I knew nothing could turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the timed speed events. I chose the jumping race.

For the whole next month we practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home, totally exhausted.

All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. One girl

named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons.

I sat at the gate and sweated all out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the court and finish in first place.

My turn finally came. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped over it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.

No cheers filled the air. The end of our run was met with surprised silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds!

I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it.

I can be the owner of my destiny(命运).

32.Why did the author like Cowboy so much in spite of its ugliness?

A. Because she was sad and lonely and needed a compa nion.

B. Because Cowboy was a strong and smart young horse.

C. Because Cowboy had a lot in common with her pony.

D. Because she lo ved horses more than anything else.

33.The audience fell into silence at the end of the run probably because _______.

A. they didn’t like Cowboy, for it was too ugly

B. they didn’t expect Cowboy would win the event

C. they never saw a horse running as fast as Cowboy

D. they were unhappy that Becky was beaten in the event

34.What did the author come to realize after the competition?

A. She could be the master of her own fate if she tried hard enough.

B. She ought to gather the courage to solve all the problems.

C. It was time to forget her pony and treat Cowboy better.

D. She needed to work harder to win more blue ribbons.

35.What can you infer from the story?

A. All of their hard training was totally in vain.

B. A blue ribbon must be the second highest prize.

C. Both Becky and the author won in the jumping event.

D. Cowboy lost in the event of being judged by appearance.

如: 1、They must be in the classroom now.

2、The light in the teachers’ office is still on. Miss Gao must be w orking.

3、Mike may (might) hurt in the traffic accident.

4、He must have finished his homework yesterday.

(1)You have worked all this week .You must be tired.

(2)Will you please answer the phone? It could /may/might be your mother.

(3)According to the radio ,it may/might/could rain this evening.

2、在否定句中使用can’t和may not/might not. can’t表示很有把握的否定推测,意为“不可能”;may not/ might not 表示不太有把握的否定推测,意为“可能不”如:

(1)She can’t be at school .It’s Sunday today.

(2)She may not be there today.

(3)I think he might not come.

(1)Who can it be at the door ?Can it be Tom?

(2)Where could it be?

三、在表示推测时,反意疑问句的两种情况;

(1)He must be good at English, isn't he?

(2)You might be watching TV at home ,aren't you?

(1)It must have rained last night , didn’t it?

(2)You might have been to the Great Wall, haven’t you?

Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say.

This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence:they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image.

Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent.

They work five days on and two days off to mimic the normal way they do things on Earth as much as possible. Before a mission, the family and friends of each ISS crew member put together a collection of family photos, massages, videos and reading material for the astronauts to look at when they will be floating 370 kilometers above the Earth.

Many astronauts say that one of the most relaxing things to do in space is to look out of the window and stare at the universe and the Earth.

One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons."

At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the owner of my destiny." 故选A。

When Cowboy and I entered the events... ‘shown the gate’."

When Cowboy and I entered the events... ‘shown the gate’."

阅读理解(满分39分) A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy(辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash! 1. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must________. A. wear various formal clothes B. roll a wooden cheese in their own lane C. kick or throw their cheese D. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos 2. Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held? A. In New Mexico. B. In the Caribbean. C. In Australia. D. In China.

III. Reading Comprehension Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. B Kettlebells do not hurt people. People do. A kettlebell will get your respect – the easy way or the hard way. Here is the easy way. 1. Get a medical clearance. Get clearance, especially from an orthopedist and a cardiologist. The latter is no joking matter, since kettlebell training can be extremely intense. 2. Always be aware of your surroundings. Find a training area with a non-slippery surface on which you are not afraid to drop a kettlebell. The area must be clear of objects you might trip over – including other kettlebells – or that you might hit with a kettlebell. There should be no people or animals in a radius where you could injure them. 3. Train barefoot or wear shoes with a flat, thin sole and room for the toes to spread. Training barefoot is superior for health and performance reasons. If you must wear shoes, wear Converse Chuck Taylors, Vibram Five Fingers, or similar shoes that have thin soles and do not pinch the toes together. You have sensory receptors on the bottoms of your feet that make you stronger and improve balance and coordination. Wearing traditional shoes diminishes the ability of these receptors to work properly, and therefore inhibits performance and can increase the risk of injury. Go native. 4. Never contest for space with a kettlebell. Do not try to save a rep that has gone wrong. Guide the kettlebell to fall harmlessly, and move out of the way if necessary. And remember, quick feet are happy feet. 5. Practice all safety measures at all times. Respect every kettlebell, even the lightest one. Always use perfect form picking up and setting down a kettlebell. The set is not over until the bell is safely parked.
