“I see you’ve got a bit of water in your coat” said the man at the Metro station,”

A pony(马驹) bit me earlier.”

As it happen, the bit was virtually painless: more the kind of small bite might get

from a naughty child. The pony responsible was queuing up for some cream in the car

park near Haytor, and perhaps though I’d jumped in ahead of him.

Hilversum is a medium-sized city between the major cities of Amesterdam andUtrecht in thearea of North Holland, the Netherlands. Unlike most of theNetherlands, Hilversum is actually in a hilly area with the soil mostly consisting ofsand. Once called the Garden of Amsterdam, it still attracts travelers to come over tocycle and walk through the surrounding forests. They visit it for a relaxing day off from the urban madness. For Dutch people, Hilversum is all about textile(纺织)and media industries, and modern architecture.

In history, Hilversum was largely an agricultural area. Daily life was marked byfarming,

sheepraising and wool production. A railway link to Amsterdam in 1874attracted rich traders from Amsterdam to Hilversum. They built themselves large villas(别墅)in the wooded surroundings of the town. One of the families moving in was the Brenninkmeijers, currently the wealthiest family of the Netherlands. Theymoved in after big success in the textileindustry and aided a substantial textileindustryin Hilversum. But the textile boom lasted only several decades. The last factoryclosed in the 1960s.

The change to a media economy started in 1920, when theNetherlandsSeintoestellenFabriek (NSF) established a radio factory in Hilversum. Most radio stations settled in the large villas in the leafy areas of the town. Televisiongave another push to the local economy. Hilversum became the media capital of theNetherlands, and Dutch television stars moved into the leafy neighborhoodssurrounding the town.

In the early 1900s, modern architects W. M. Dudok and J. Duiker placedhundreds of remarkable buildings in Hilversum. These modern architecturalmasterpieces(杰作)are so many that Hilversum almost feels like an open airmuseum. Dudok alone shaped most of 20th century Hilversum and approximately 75buildings still bear his unique characteristics. His masterpiece, Hilversum Town Hall, was built in 1928-1931. It has wide international fame and is included in manyarchitecture textbooks. The building has remarkable shape and looks like acombination of “blocks”. The oddness of life in space never quite goes away. Here are some examples.

First consider something as simple as sleep. Its position presents its ownchallenges. The

main question is whether you want your arms inside or outside thesleeping bag. If you leave your arms out, they float free in zero gravity, often giving a sleeping astronaut the look of a funny ballet (芭蕾)dancer. “I’m an inside guy,”Mike Hopkins says, who returned from a six-month tour on the International Space Station.“I like to be wrapped up.”

On the station, the ordinary becomes strange. The exercise bike for the Americanastronaut has no handlebars. It also has no sear. With no gravity, it’s just as easy topedal violently. You can watch a movie while you pedal by floating a microcomputeranywhere you want. Without gravity to help circulate air, the carbon dioxide you exhale(呼气)has a tendency to form an invisible(隐形的)cloud around your head. You can end up with whatastronauts call a carbon-dioxide headache.

Leroy Chiao, 54, an American retiredastronaut after four flights, describes whathappens even before you float out of your seat. “Your inner ear thinks you’re falling.Meanwhile your eyes are telling you you’re standing straight. That can beannoying—that’s why some people feel sick.” Within a couple of days—truly terribledays for some—astronauts’ brains learn to ignore the panicky signals from the innerear, and space sickness disappears.

Space travelcan be so delightful but at the same time invisibly dangerous. Forinstance, astronauts lose bone mass. That’s why exercise is consi dered so vital thatNational Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) puts in right on theworkdayschedule. The focus on fitness is as much about science and the future as it isabout keeping any individualastronaut healthy. NASA is worried about two things:recovery time once astronauts return home, and, more importantly, how tomaintainstrength and fitness for the two and a half years or more that it would take tomake a round-trip to Mars.

63. What is the major challenge to astronauts when they sleep in space?

A. Deciding on a proper sleep position.

B. Choosing a comfortable sleeping bag.

C. Seeking a way to fall asleep quickly.

D. Finding a right time to go to sleep.

64. The astronauts will suffer from a carbon-dioxide headache when ________?

A. they circle around on their bikes

B. they use microcomputers without a stop

C. Theyexercise in one place for a long time

D. they watch a movie while pedaling

65. Some astronauts feel sick on the station during the first few days because

_______?

A. their senses stop working

B. they have to stand up straight

C. they float out of their seats unexpectedly

D. their brains receive contradictory messages

66. One of NASA’s major concerns about astronauts is_______.

A. how much exercise they do on the station

B. how they can remain healthy for long in space

C. whether they can recover after returning home

D. whether they are able to go back to the station

Science has a lot of uses. It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, makebombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there’s always a temptation (诱惑)to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal, The Hidden Sources of Love,Character, and Achievement , appears to be the latest in a long line of writers whohave failed to resist the temptation.

Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to dealwith a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has sciencerevealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are somepeople happy and successful while others aren’t?

To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines (学科).Considering this, you might expect the book to be a dry recitation of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox(非常规的), and perhaps unfortunate, way. Instead of introducingscientifictheories, he tells a story, within which he tries to makehis points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, thehero and heroine in his story, live throughchildhood, we hear about the science ofchild development, and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexualattraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.

On the whole, Brooks’s story is acceptable if uninspired. Ad one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. Ienjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the moreserious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partlyinvolveBrooks’sattempt to translate his tale into science.

67. The author mentions the function of science at the beginning of the passage to

_______.

A. illustrate where science can be applied

B. demonstrate the value of Brooks’s new book

C. remind the reader of the importance of science

D. explain why many writers use science in their works

68. According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book?

A. Its strong basis.

B. Its convincing points.

C. Its clear writing.

D. Its memorable characters.

69. What’s the author’s general attitude towards the book?

A. Contradictory.

B. Supportive.

C. Cautious.

D. Critical.

70. What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph?

A. Problems with the book.

B. Brooks’s life experiences.

C. Death of the characters.

D. Brooks’stranslation skills.

Perri Klass and her mother, Sheila Solomon Klass, Mrs.

2015年高考全国卷2英语试题及答案(word精校版) 含详细解析 第Ⅰ卷 第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)略 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) A My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble. 21. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set? A.He got an older model than he had expected. B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken. C.He could have bought it at a lower price. D.He failed to find any movie shows on it. 22. Which of the following an best replace the phrase “signed off” in paragraph 1? A.ended all their programs
