What if someone told you about a kind of grass as tall as the tallest trees? A grass as strong as steel? Would you believe that person? You should, for that grass is bamboo, the “wood” of 1,001 uses. It is not just a material for making useful products. Young bamboo is eaten, often mixed with other vegetables.

Bamboo grows in many parts of the word. In the US it grows in many states like Virginia and Florida. Most bamboo, however, is found in warm, wet climates, especially in Asia and on the islands of the South Pacific Ocean.

In most Asian countries, bamboo is nearly as important as rice. Many Asians live in bamboo houses. They sit on bamboo chairs, fence their land with bamboo and use it to cage their chickens and pigs. This unusual material is used not only to build large buildings but also to make water pipes, musical instruments and paper.

Bamboo is light, strong and bends without breaking. Bamboo is cheap, floats on water and almost never wears out. Nothing else on earth grows quite so fast as bamboo. At times you can even see it grow! Scientists have recorded growths of more than three feet in just 24 hours!

There are over 1,000 kinds of bamboo. The shortest is only about three inches while the tallest is more than 200 feet. No wonder, then, the lives of nearly half the people on earth would change greatly if there ere no longer any bamboo.

Looking back on the first twenty years of my life, I feel grateful to have been so healthy and happy. For my happiness, I am grateful to so many people and lucky events, but what have guided me and supported me in my life are my physical health, healthy finances(财力), and my family’s happiness.

Health comes first for me, because without health everything else is meaningless. Imagine starting a career without good health.Imagine starting a family without good health. Imagine achieving anything without good health. Clearly, good health is the first necessary for other part of one’s life.

Good health is not enough to be happy. We still need to have mone y in today’s society. Money obviously pays for basic needs of life — food, housing, clothing —but it is also necessary for other reason like the quality of our education and medical care.

Next comes the most important thing in having a happy life—our family. It provides the love, joy and support that everybody needs. I love my family with all my heart. I get pleasure from their pleasure.

I suffer when they suffer. My family helped me get through the hard times of entrance exams. They comforted

and advised me when I had misunderstanding with my friends. More importantly, they have been there to share in my successes in the past twenty years.

In summary (总结), all these are what I need and want in this world. As long as I stay healthy, earn enough money, and share both good times and bad times with my family, I will always be the happiest girl in the world.

34. This passage is most likely to be found in the ______ part of a newspaper.

A. OPINIONS

B. SPORTS

C. BUSINESS

D. ADVERTISEMENT

35. The writer mentions her entrance exams in paragraph 4 in order to prove that _______.

A. opportunities go to those with strong beliefs

B. our quality of life can be improved with money

C. nothing can be achieved without a healthy body

36. What is the main purpose of this passage?

A. To argue about the importance of money.

B. To explain what are the keys to happiness.

C. To discuss ways of dealing with difficulties.

D. To show people’s different attitudes to happiness.

37. How is the passage organized?

A. Introduction—Explanation—Summary

B. Examples—Argument—Summary

C. Argument—Topic—Conclusion

D. Topic—Examples—Conclusion

When I was in Grade ThreeI got into a major argument with a boy in my class one d ay. I have forgotten what the argument was about, but I have never forgotten the lesson I learned that day.

I believed that I was right and he was wrong—and he was sure that I was wrong and

he was right. The teacher decided to teach us a very important lesson.

She brought us up to the front of the class and placed him on one side of her des k and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a largeround object.I could cle arly see that it was black. She asked the boy what color the object was.“White,”he answered.

I couldn‘t believe he said the object was white, when it was obviously black!Another argument started between my classmate and me.Seeing this, the teacher told us to change places, and this time I found the object was white.

It was an object with two differently colored sides, and from his side it was white. Only from my side it was black.

Sometimes we need to look at a problem from the other person‘s view in order to tr uly understand that person‘s viewpoint.

From old times, crows(乌鸦)have been famous for their cleverness. They use tools,

work out problems,

and even enjoy playing. Scientists have studied carefully how crows go about these act ivities.

To make tools, crows cut off leaves with their “mouths”,shape them,

and use them to look for bugs(虫子)

in wood or plants. Just as a carpenter carries his tools with him,

a crow will carry its tool around. When the leaf isn‘t needed for the moment,

the bird stores the tool at its feet or somewhere else.

To test wild crows’abilities to work out problemsscientists placed food outdoors in covered bowls. They watched with interest as the birds smartly opened the bowls to ge

t the food. Scientists also found out that crows can make use of the traffic. For e xample, crows would drop a nut on the road and wait for a car to run over the nut to bre

ak it.

Besides, crows seem to enjoy playing. Young crows will carry a stick or nut into the air,

drop it,and fly to catch the object as it falls.

So just how smart are crows? Perhaps a crow will never do tricks as a dog will.Bu

t scientists agree that there‘s a lot going on in the brain of a clever crow.
