Empathy(同情心) lets us feel another person's pain and drives us to help. Do any other animals feel empathy? Scientists recently found that rats do, too.

Most people don't like rats. In many people’s eyes, rats are only bad. But Jean Decety and his partners at the University of Chicago did an experiment. It showed that rats are kind, warm-hearted animals. They can feel each other's pain.

Scientists placed pairs of rats in plastic cages for two weeks. During this time, they got to know each other. Then they put one of the rats from each pair into a small contai ner (容器) in the cages. The small container had a door. It was rigged(操纵) to fall to the side when the free rat touched it. Many of the trapped rats squeaked(吱吱叫 ) to express their discomfort . The other rats of the pairs could see their suffering friends clearly.

In most pairs, the free rats would become very worried about their friends. They kept trying

to save their friends again and again throughout the month. Scientists put the rats' favourite chocolate in the cages, but the rats didn't eat it until they had saved their friends successfully. Scientists also found that female rats tended to act more empathetic than male ones.

"The results are the first to show that rats take action in response to another's trouble," Decety said. "Monkeys and chimpanzees (黑猩猩 ) have similar behavior. But unlike those animals, rats can be ready used in laboratory studies. They will help us to learn which parts of the brain lead to empathy and helping behavior and whether empathy is natural."

Everybody has had at least one experience from which he knows the meaning of life. This time, which took place several years ago, but seems as if it just happened. It seems tha t there's a good reason why dogs are always seen as man's best friend. Scientists have found that dogs are the only animals that can read emotions(情感)in faces much like humans. The finding suggests that like an understanding friend, dogs can see if we are happy, sad, pleased or angry.

When humans look at a new face, their eyes usually look across the left, falling on the right hand side of the person's face first. A possible reason for this is that the right side of the human face is better at expressing emotions.

Scientists have now shown that pet dogs also have "left gaze b/as(左视偏好)",

but only when looking at human faces. No other animal has been known to do like this before. Dr. Kun Guo showed 17 dogs pictures of human, dog and monkey faces as well as something else with his team. The dogs' eyes and heads show a strong left gaze bias when the animals see human faces. But this did not happen when they were shown other pictures, including those of dogs.

Guo suggests that over thousands of years living with humans, dogs may have developed the left gaze bias as a way to guess our emotions.

Why do you study? Many students would simply reply: "To get good result in the college entrance examination(高考)." For several years, many have spoken out against the exams.
