But will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? Will we b e able to better the lives of others? Will we be able to accept the responsibility of buildi ng the future of our country?

The cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort. But the cynics are wrong. The college students I see a re eagerly learning about how to live independently. We help each other clean the dormit ory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money.

The cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need fo r character cultivation. But again, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply for each other, w e cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. Last week, thousands of my fel low students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.

As college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our futu re, or even the future of our country. I believe in all my fellow classmates. Though we a re still inexperienced and even a little bit childish. I believe that we have the courage an

d faith to meet any challeng

e and take on our responsibilities. We are preparing to assum

e new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place. I believe in our future.

Three year ago, I weighed more than 100 hundred kilograms which caused signifi cant embarrassment and frustration in my life. Like always failing my P.E examinations, li ke always being laughed at by girls, like being terrified to speak in public. It was my gr

andmother‘s encouragement that revived from my passive attitude to become confident in myself. She said ― My dear, if you can‘t change you figure, why not treat it as your ow n style. So I began to cautiously employ the new way of thinking. By choosing to chang e my outlook on life, I developed the confidence to make a difference and finally I foun d a totally new world.

The East and the West, Let‘s enjoy the combination of the two cultures?

Kipling said:―East is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet!‖ But now, a century later, they have met.

They have met in business. They have met in education. They have met in the ar ts. Some people will argue that these meetings will leave us with a choice between east a nd west, but I believe that the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. We can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our o wn use. We can enjoy the best of both worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.

I love Beijing and Hennan opera because it always reminds me of who I am. But I am also a fan of pop music, especially English songs. So I have combined eastern mel ody with western language. It is called western henna opera.

When two cultures meet, there may be things in one culture, which do not fit int o the tradition of the other. When this happens, we need to learn to understand and respe ct the customs of another culture. Then there are certain things some people may not like. To this, I will say, if you do not like it, please try to tolerate it. To learn to tolerate w hat you personally don‘t like is a great virtue at a time when different cultures mix and merge. Before us, there are two rivers, eastern and western cultures. At present, they may run in different courses. But eventually, they will converge into the vast sea of human c ulture.

Who was the most well-known figure in China last month? It‘s Ma JiaJue—the c ollege student who murdered 4 of his roommates. Many people attributed his crime to his poverty and deficient education. In my opinion, his crime also has much to do with his classmates‘ indifference.

Indifference is a terrible disease in today‘s colleges and the whole society. It‘s not rare that two students who have studied together for 4 years have never spoken to each other. It‘s not rare that a student who has been absent from class for several days is not noticed at all. It‘s also not rare that a student who has severe psychological pro blems is not cared about at all.

Some people may say ?What the students with psychological problems like Ma Jia Jue need is not care but psychotherapy.‖ However, when people are ill, what they need m ost is not only medical treatment, but also care from people around them. Every smile an d every caring word will bring sunshine to their life.

I once heard one of my roommates who was an introverted girl sobbing at mid-ni ght. Being afraid of disturbing her, I sent a text message to comfort her. The next day, s he told me that she was crying for not being invited to one of her friend‘s birthday party. She thought she was neglected by others. But my message was really comforting which told her someone still cared about her.

What can we do to prevent the tragedy of Ma JiaJue from happening again? Som e people may say ?Let‘s open more psychological courses in schools.‘ and other people m

走出冷漠

Once upon a time, a weenie ant was walking on his way. As he was walking, su ddenly he felt the ground shaking terribly. He looked around with his paranoid eyes and saw an elephant walking right behind him. Quickly, the little ant covered himself with dir t, but one leg was unfortunately left out. A sparrow saw everything, so she flew down wi th the purpose of teasing the ant: ―Hey, chicken! Watch out your leg, it‘s out!‖ The ant f

elt embarrassed at first but then calmly responded: ― Shi…I am going to trip that elephan t.‖

Right now, I‘m standing on this glamorous stage. But everything here reminds me of is a not so fun memory. Around this time last year I was in Nanjing competing in a nother speech contest. That was the first time for me to be in such a large event. Of cou rse the pressure I was under was immense too. After a sleepless and stressful night, I we nt onto that stage without the feeling in my legs. That speech turned out to be horrible. I don‘t remember how I get down from there, but I do remember afterwards I ju st wanted to find a hole to hide in just like the ant in the story. Back at my school, it took a lon g time for me to recover. Thanks to all the help I got from my special friends. My confi dence was restored. After rounds of giving speeches and answering tough questions, I am here today. From all that I‘ve been through I‘ve learned that a good future is based on a forgotten past, if I want my life to go on well I have to let go of my past failure. However, we meed dreams. They nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. They keep us going. One night, I complained to my mom about the lack of time. Finally she said,＂yo u are short of time just because you waste precious minutes on complaints and anxiety. T he point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always f it in some thing more.＂

It is the same with filling the jar. Even if you place a dozen fist-sized rocks and a bucket of gravel into the jar, there is still space for sand and water between the rocks and gravel.

The lack of time is just the excuse for my negligence of every single minute. I b elieve that the great dividing line between success and failure can be expressed in six wo rds,＂I did not have enough time.＂The fact is I do have exactly the same number of ho urs per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einste in. The point is I have never touched upon the real meaning of life which lies in snatchi ng, seizing and enjoying every minute of it. No idleness, no delay, no procrastination, no complaint! Beggars are one of the most familiar groups in every city. They accompany us fr om our childhood until now, and I've found both the beggars and I change in this journe y.

Years ago as a little girl, when I came across some old and disabled beggars on the road, I'd donate some pocket money to them, happily thinking I was helping.

s I have grown older, I've found the number of beggars has grown larger and the y are more diverse. They appear in every corner of the city, on the overbridge, on the str eet, near restaurants, and even at your door. In contrast with the old days, it seems like t

he situation with beggars today is more complicated, which has made me hesitate before deciding whether to help them or not.

It's hard for me to give them money considering some who appear beggars in day time but dress up and go to fancy restaurants at night; and some who are controlled by some illegal organization and the money they get all goes to the organization. If I help th em, I'd be making the problem worse, I'd be doing harm to the society, indirectly. But it' s also hard not to give them money, considering there're real beggars who really need hel p. If I don't help them, who will? And where is my sympathy?

What hurts me the most is not how hard it is to distinguish the real help-seekers from the many false ones, but that some children are forced by adults, sometimes even th eir parents, to beg. They grow up despised by the world, out of mainstream society. Whe n I see their eyes filled with desperation and impudence instead of purity and innocence, my heart sinks. We don't know how they will face the world when they grow up, how t his will shape their characters, and what they may do to the society, to perpetuate this cy cle of violence.

Months ago the Fu Jian government has promulgated a new policy to deal with 8 kinds of beggars. An internet survey shows that over 80% of voters reacted positively to ward the policy. We know that one single policy cannot solve a problem as complex as t his one, but we do look forward to some improvement. I wish all humanity can live like human.

今日乞丐

在城市中，乞丐是我们最熟悉的群体之一。他们伴随着我们的成长，从童年直到现在。在这个过程中，我发现，乞丐和我都在变。

小时候，每当看到路旁的乞丐，通常是老人或残疾人，我会给他们一些零钱，并且高兴地认为我帮了他们。

长大后，我发现身边乞丐的数量有所增加，而且他们种类繁多。他们无所不在，天桥上，大街上，饭馆旁，家门口，城市中处处是他们的身影。比起过去，今天的乞丐似乎更加复杂，使得我在决定帮不帮他们的时候犹豫不决。

最让我难受的，并不是因为从众多的假乞丐中找出真乞丐是多么的困难，而是那些被成人，甚至被父母教唆，去乞讨的孩子们。他们在歧视中长大，和主流社会脱离。当我看到他们眼睛里本应有的纯真和童稚被绝望和无耻取代时，心里便很难受。我们不知道他们长大后会怎样面对这个世界，他们的性格会被童年的经历塑造成什么样子，以及他们有可能对社会做出怎样的事情---让恶性循环继续？

几个月前，福建省颁布了一项针对八类乞丐的新政策。网上调查显示，超过80%的人对此政策持乐观态度。虽然如此复杂的问题不能通过单单一项政策得以解决，我们还是期待着一些改善。愿所有的人都能像人一样活着。

My Views on Receiving Education

In my early years, I did not see the value of education.

When I was going on thirteen, I started to run my own shop. From then on, I w orked hard to become a successful businessman.

One day I realized the importance of the English language in the business world and started taking night classes.

I was able to communicate well with foreign customers after two years of English study. But I started to feel that, in the long run, having a limited knowledge of English was not enough to make my business successful. I knew that only a well- rounded educat ion could guarantee my success in the future.

When I was eighteen, I had to make a decision to continue doing business or go back to school. There was one obstacle keeping me from getting an advanced education.

I had only completed elementary school up to that point. I then went back to senior hig h school after four months of tutoring in different subjects. Being at school for the first ti me after so many years was somewhat embarrassing because my classmates were at least two or three years younger than I. I concluded that my age did not matter. The important thing was getting into college.

I took the College Entrance Exams. Although my math exam result was only one point below the required score. I never gave up hope. The following year, I took it agai

n and received the highest score in my city. Achieving such an amazing result gave me e ncouragement and courage necessary to continue my education to the next step.

I am now in my second year of college and know that it is never too late to lea rn. My passion for studying and improving myself will never come to a halt as long as I continue to live.

―Live and Learn.‖ is the motto I have adopted. I believe with an education I will succeed. So, if you are wondering whether education is important, don‘t hesitate a mome nt to step up and seize the opportunity.

在我小的时候，我不觉得教育有什么价值。在13岁的时候，我开始经营我自己的商店。从那时开始，我为成为一个成功的商人而努力工作。

一天，我意识到了英语对做生意的重要性并且开始上夜校。

18岁的时候，我必须在继续从商和重新回学校学习之间做出选择。当时我仅有的小学学历成为我接受高等教育的一大障碍。经过4个月各门功课的恶补，我又回到了高中。多年后再次回到学校，让我有些尴尬。因为我的同班同学至少比我小2至3岁。然而在我看来，年龄不是问题，重要的是能上大学。

我参加了高考。虽然我的数学只比分数线低了一分。但我没有放弃。第二年，我又参加了高考并取得了当地的第一名。得到这样一个令人欣喜的结果，给了我进一步深造的动力和胆量。

Change

Leo Tolstoy once said, everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.

He is right. We always have great plans and dreams in our minds… too ready to achieve something grand that changes the world or benefits all of mankind .For example; we hate pollution and have made up our minds to find new energy sources that keep th e environment clean. Yet we still litter on the ground. We complain about traffic jams, so we plan to build more highways to solve the problem, but it never occurs to us that our failure to follow traffic regulations is the leading cause of this situation. We are so conc erned that the violence in the media has a bad impact on our children, we urge the gover nment to set laws to protect them. But, do we, as adults, set a good example for our kid s? We use nasty words and even spit on the ground in front of them, I dare to say, we harm more!

In my opinion, before we decide to change the world, we had better change ourse lves first. As ordinary individuals, we do not have the power to change the world. But w e can change our habit of littering, spitting, cussing, we can respect the environment arou nd us, we must act as good models for our kids.

If each of us does all of these little things, all of us, millions and millions of ind ividuals together, together we will be strong …strong enough to change our world!

So please, the next time you do something, think how your actions influence not only you, but those around you too, especially our children …and perhaps more important ly…our planet!

改变

列夫·托尔斯泰曾说过：每个人都想改变这个世界，但是没有人想到改变自己。

他说的很有道理，我们每个人都心怀伟大时志向，时刻准备去干一番能造福全人类的大事业。比如，我们痛恨环境污染，所以我们下定决心去开发新的更高效更干净的能源来保护我们的环境，但是同时我们却随手乱扔垃圾；我们抱怨大城市的交通堵塞，计划造更多的高速路来解决交通问题，但是我们从来没有想过，如果我们能遵守交通规则话，那么这一问题是不是可以得到很大得缓解呢？我们担心电视电影里面得暴力会对我们得孩子产生不良的影响，于是我们敦促政府通过立法来保护未成年人，但是我们这些大人又做得怎么样

呢？我们为我们的下一代做好了表率吗？我们说粗话，甚至在孩子面前抽烟。不客气地说，我们对孩子的不良影响更多！

在我看来，在我们打算改变这个世界之前，我们最好先改变一下自己。作为一个普通人，我们其实没有改变这个世界的能力，但是我可以改变我们随地扔垃圾，随地吐痰的坏习惯，我们应该学会去保护环境，我们应该为我们的孩子起好的表率作用。

如果我们每个人都能从小事起，那么千千万万个人力量汇聚在一起，那力量是强大的，足以改变这个世界。

朋友，当您在做某一件事情的时候，请您想一想，您的行为会对您周围的人产生怎样的影响，因为，您的行为不单单影响到您自己，还有您周围的人，更重要的是我们的孩子…甚至我们的世界。

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today I want to tell you a story about one of my friends, a lovely and smart girl who is always ready to help others. Being our gra de leader, she is good at both work and study. In many people's opinion, she is excellent and perfect. But one day she told me she was gloomy and insecure. People around her considered her outstanding and flawless, thinking she could handle everything. But the mo re she thought about herself, the more disappointed she became. She found that she was f ar from pe rfection. Last week, she didn‘t do well in her French quiz, and the day before yesterday, she was late for a conference. She felt depressed and frustrated, because she fai led to be a perfect girl without any mistakes.

I was surprised to hear that for I thought she had every reason to be confident. However, the expectation of perfection has become a burden to her. I told her no one co uld be perfect and I suggested she find her own position.

In fact, people are so eager to be perfect that they demand too much of themselv es. They want to be special and unique, and they want to have no defects or weaknesses. However, we can never avoid mistakes and errors. It‘s impossible for us to be a superm an or a superwoman. No matter how successful we are, there are always some flaws. If we hold that everything should be perfect, we would be overcritical.

My friend now has changed her attitude. She accepts her shortcomings but still ke eps a positive outlook. She is even more active and doesn‘t allow the mistakes to hinder her pursuit of excellence. And I think that‘s the way we should be！That‘s all. Thank you!

没有人可以完美无缺

女士们、先生们，大家早上好！今天我想给大家讲一个我朋友的故事。她是一个聪明可爱、乐于助人的女孩。作为我们的年级长，她无论工作还是学习都很出色。在很多人眼里，她是如此优秀，近乎完美了。但有一天她却告诉我，她很迷惘和自卑：周围的人都认为她很优秀，完美无缺，可以对付任何事情；而她想得越多对自己就越是失望。她发觉自己远不够完美。上周她的法语测验考得不理想；前天，一个会议她又迟到了：很多事情做的不尽完美，这让她很是灰心丧气。

听到这些的时候我很惊讶，我原以为她有充分的理由对自己充满信心。然而，对完美的期望却变成了她的负担。我告诉她，没有人可以完美无缺的，她应该找到自己真正的位置。

实际上，人们有时过于追求完美而且期望的太多了。我们想要特别，想要独一无二；又想要没有缺点没有弱点。可是，人是无法避免错误的,有谁能成为超人呢？无论你多么成功，总是有一些事情不够完美。如果我们坚持要完美无缺，那只能是一种求全责备。

―If I could reach higher, just for one moment to touch the sky…‖---this is from my favorite song Reach.

When we are appreciating the passionate melody of Gloria Estefan, we could hard ly imagine that she could return to the stage after her paralysis. In the year 1990, this Cu ban singer was knocked down in a traffic accident, and the doctor declared that she migh t never walk again. But Gloria did not give up and kept up constant exercising. Just one year after the disaster, she stood up again and presented this encouraging song at the Atla nta Olympics.

Whenever I think of Gloria, I can‘t help recalling my memory seven years ago, w hen I first entered university. Naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores in study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. And the su ccessive failures in the beginning led me into despair. ―Am I destined to take the back se at to others?‖ Unwilling to submit to the fate, I paid more efforts on my study as well a s many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just wa nt to catch every lit tle opportunity to prove myself. Constant effort yields sure success. Thanks to the competi tion, I received some awards and most of all, I gained the courage and confidence to fac e any difficulties in my life journey.

Life is just like farming, and what you can reap depends a lot on your sowing a nd dedication. Once you have a dream, don‘t be hesitant. Your next difficult step may be the one to the top. Keep going forward, even in the toughest time, and never give up.

Honourable judges, ladies and gentlemen,

Good afternoon! Today I would like to talk about the importance of keeping opti mistic. When we encounter difficulties in life, we notice that some of us choose to bury t heir heads in the sand. Unfortunately, however, this attitude will do you no good, because if you will have no courage even to face them, how can you conquer them? Thus, be o ptimistic, ladies and gentlemen, as it can give you confidence and help you see yourself t hrough the hard times, just as Winston Churchill once said, ―An optimist sees an opportu nity in every calamity; a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity.‖

Ladies and Gentlemen, keeping optimistic, you will be able to realize, in spite of some hardship, there‘s always hope waiting for you, which will lead you to the ultimate s uccess. Historically as well as currently, there are too many optimists of this kind to enu merate. You see, Thomas Edison is optimistic; if not, the light of hope in his heart could not illuminate the whole world. Alfred Nobel is optimistic; if not, the explosives and the prestigious Nobel Prize would not have come into being. And Lance Armstrong is also o ptimistic; if not, the devil of cancer would have devoured his life and the world would n ot see a 5-time winner of the Tour De France.

A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; that depends on your attitude only, and s o does success, so does life. Hindrances and difficulties do exist, but if you are optimistic, then they are only episodes on your long way to the throne of success; they are more b ridges than obstacles! Now I prefer to end my speech with the great British poet Shelley‘s lines: ―If winter comes, can spring be far behind?‖ Thank you!

With great vision, college education has equipped me, first with a powerful propel ler----the sophisticated knowledge in certain field and wide exposure to other disciplines. By dedicating myself to the engineering courses in the day and immersing myself in the r ich banquet of the world literature at night, I‘ve amassed the driving force for the future and enriched my soul.

Besides, college education has also provided me with a precise compass----the sen se of social responsibility. How can I best serve the interest of the public while achieving my self-fulfillment? My one year‘s experience as a part-time English teacher has testified: to be valuable to society as well as to find my place, I have to possess some actual str ength and the ability to function well in the most challenging situation. Amid the hectic s chedule that balances club activities, sports, and academic courses, I feel the rhythm and beauty in the intensity of my high-pitched life, knowing that I ‘m on the right way.
