I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in

the world.

Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. ―But the desk,‖ she’d said again, ―it’s for Elizabeth.‖

I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was ―too emotional(易动感情的)‖. But she lived ―on the surface‖.

As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.

My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace—it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.

Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

21. The passage shows that ________.

A. mother cared much about her daughter in words

B. mother was too serious about everything her daughter had done

C. mother wrote to her daughter in careful words

D. mother was cold on the surface but kind in her heart to her daughter

A. deep understanding between the old and the young

B. different ideas between the mother and the daughter

C. free talks between mother and daughter

D. part of the sea going far in land

23. What did mother do with her daughter’s letter asking forgiveness?

A. She had never received the letter.

B. For years, she often talked about the letter.

C. She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life.

D. She read the letter again and again till she died.

24. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. My letter to Mother

B. Mother and Children

C. My mother’s Desk

D. Talks between Mother and Me

Car crashes are the top killer of American teenagers. Most of the crashes result from distracted driving—not paying attention to the road.

Ryan Didone was a fifteen-year-old passenger in a car that hit a tree. He was one of the nation's more than thirty thousandvictims of traffic crashes in 2008. Nearly four thousanddeaths, about twelve percent, involved drivers aged fifteen to twenty. Ryan's father, Thomas Didone, is a police captain in Montgomery County, Maryland. He said, "It was an inexperienced, immature driver who felt that he was invincible(不可战胜的), driving at night with a carload of kids. He was distracted, he was going too fast, and it ended up causing one death and some upsetting experiences and tragedy for the rest of the community."

Jim Jennings from the Allstate Insurance Company said "The number one cause of distracted-driving accidents is the mobile phone. Talking on the phone or reaching for it is like drinking four beers and driving. If you're texting while driving, you are twenty-three times more likely to get into an accident than somebody who isn't.

Reaching for a cell phone when it's going off, you're nine times more likely to get into an accident than normally driving," The insurance industry recently held a safety

event near Washington for teen drivers.

At first, nineteen-year-old KevinSchumann easily avoided large, inflatable(可充气的)dolls thrown in front of the car to represent children. He also avoided orange cones(锥形路障)representing the edge of the road. Then, as part of the test,he started texting. He hit several cones and at least one doll.

Debbie Pickford from the Allstate Insurance Company said, "Teens are especially at risk from distracted driving—and not just because they lack experience on the roads. What we know from research on teen braindevelopment, is that teens don't really have fully developed brains until they are twenty-five years old. You put those two things together and you get a much, much higher risk.‖

29. According to the passage, __________is the most likely to lead to a traffic

accident while you are driving.

A. reaching for a cell phone.

B. texting on the mobile phone

C. talking on the mobile phone

D. bringing along a cell phone

30. A safety event held by insurance industry was meant to __________.

A. attract more teenagers to take part in it

B. make more teenagers practice avoiding large barriers

C. draw enough attention to teenagers' distracted driving

D. encourage more teenagers to pay for insurance protection

31. The passage is probably followed by a concluding paragraph about __________.

A. much higher risk

B. teen brain development

C. measures to be taken

D. experienceontheroads

32. Of all the following, which is the best title for the passage?

A. Car Crashes —the Top Killer.

B. Drunken Driving —Dangerous Enough!

C. Tips on Driving While Calling

D. Distracted Driving —Let's Avoid!

D

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with.

The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligent. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very probably be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.

33. The writer is in favor of the view that man’s intelligence is given to him __________.

A. at birth

B. through education

C. both at birth and through education

D. neither at birth nor through education

34. If a child is born with low intelligence, he can __________.

A. become a genius

B. still become a genius if he should be given special education

C. not reach his intelligence in his life.

D. reach his intelligence limits in rich surroundings

35. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows __________.

A. the role of environment on intelligence

B. the importance of their intelligence

C. the importance of their positions

D. the part that birth plays

One possible version:

Dear Sara,

I’m glad to receive your letter. Thanks for your caring for the weather and my health. Now I’d like to tell you something about the smog in our hometown.

Nowadays, the hazy weather frequently appears in our country. It has not only done harm to people’s health, but also affected the public transportation. Terrible accidents happen every now and then, some highways have to be shut down because of the low visibility.

Obviously, air pollution is the main factor that has resulted in the frequency of hazy weather. At the same time, smoke from burning coal and all kinds of dust are also important factors. Besides, exhaust emission from cars and buses has made the situation even worse. So proper measures should be adopted to deal with the serious problem. To students, opportunities for outdoor sports activities should be decreased, washing faces and hands with running water after each outing is also important, and do not forget to wear a good-quality mask to protect yourself while going out.

I hope we will regain a fresh, clean and bright world soon.

Mama says all the dust is due to the drought. The dirt sifts into everything. It covers our clothes. We have to wash the dishes before each meal. We rarely drive the truck because Papa fears the dust from the road will ruin the motor. When my sister, Faye, and I walk to school, we wear kerchiefs over our mouths so we don’t breathe in the dirt. On days when the air is so bad that they close the school, we stay home and help Mama put wet sheets over the windows. But the dirt always finds a way in. Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After lunch, Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while I played with Faye in the yard. The temperature suddenly dropped. I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust. All the birds flew away. “I must warn Papa,” I thought to myself. To avoid her panicking, I gently told Faye to go back inside where she would be safe, and then headed off to the field.

I rol l out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom. I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I face my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is of my face. It’s not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit. Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite o f their grandmother’s chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years, I have learned it’s okay to just say “no.” I shouldn’t feel sorry for refusing food that I don’t want to eat. So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self –confidence and energy, extends life and above all improve my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It’s through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out. 1.Why is there a smile on the author’s face in the morning? A. Because she sees her family sleeping peacefully. B. Because she finishes her favorite exercise C. Because she enjoys the interesting DVD D. Because she feels a sense of achievement 2. What does the underlined word “commitment” in the last paragraph mean? A. Good health B. Firm belief C.A strong power D.A regular habit 3. What can we learn about the author from the text? A. She acts in a strange way B. She wants to look different from others C. She aims to develop a good body shape

Here are the garden products to avoid: Cocoa mulch Some gardeners like to use cocoa shell mulch in their gardens but, just like chocolate, cocoa shell mulch contains theobromine (可可碱), which is poisonous to dogs. This means that cocoa shell mulch can be potentially deadly if consumed in large quantities. If you own a dog I’d strongly advise that you avoid using Cocoa mulch in your garden. Compost Despite being an eco-friendly garden feature, compost can be highly dangerous for animal. As organic matter decomposes, it releases mycotoxins (霉菌素), which are poisonous to wildlife. Consumption of mycotoxins can cause panting, vomiting (呕吐), seizures and even death in dogs. If you do use compost in your garden, make sure it is securely fenced off so that your pet cannot access it. Weed killer The chemicals contained in weed killers can be irritants to animals and, in some cases, even poisonous. Some weed killers contain harmful substances, such as borax and arsenic, which can potentially be fatal to pets. If you are unsure whether a weed killer is safe to use in a garden that your pet uses, you should always seek the manufacturer’s advice first, or ask a vet (兽医).
