Translation Studies on Expressions with Chinese Characteristics in GWR from 2001 to 2012

Chapter 3 Methodology

3.1 Introduction

T he government work report(GWR), delivered at National People’s Congress, has profound significance on the development of the society for GWR involves the political policies, economy, culture, foreign affairs, national defense, education and pe ople’s livelihood, etc. therefore, the quality of the translation directly affects foreign reader’s understanding of its content. However the translation of GWR is quite difficult .first, many new concepts and Expressions with Chinese Characteristics (ECCs) are emerging, which have no existed equivalents in the C—E dictionary. Second, the wording and syntax of GWR have quite Chinese—specific. Therefore, many scholars have studied the translation of GWR,while there are rare researches on ECCs. The ECCs in this thesis mainly contains the following forms: 1) Chinese --Shortened forms, 2) Chinese four—character Expressions, 3) Culture—Loaded words, 4)Neologism.

3.2 Data collecting and methods

The author has selected both Chinese and English versions of

Government Work Report delivered at the National People’s Congress in the recent 12 years, i. e. from 2001 to 2012. The Chinese versions were retrieved from http:∥https://www.sodocs.net/doc/c36689963.html,, and the English versions were retrieved from http:∥https://www.sodocs.net/doc/c36689963.html,(the website of Central Compilation Translation Bureau) and http:∥english. https://www.sodocs.net/doc/c36689963.html,.All the examples of Expressions with Chinese Characteristics in this thesis are adopted from the GWR(2001—2012), and all the examples in this thesis are adopted from the translation versions by Central Compilation and Translation Bureau.

After reading the papers and articles on the translations of ECCs and GWR from the 3 prominent websites above , the author also finds that the vast majority of the studies focus on the difficulties in GWR’s translations and tries to seek solutions to these problems. T he following scholars as Jia(贾玲,2003:26-28),Wang(王弄笙,2004:56-59),Cheng(程镇球, 2004:48-50),Yang (杨大亮,杨海燕,2006:72-74),Jia(贾文波,2000),Lu(卢敏,2002:48-51),etc. make their contributions to GWR’s translations. Besides, a total of 5 research articles are selected from 3 leading journals in the translation field, namely, Chinese Translators Journal,Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Foreign Language Teaching.
