American Popular Culture:Movies and Music

As we all know, American Popular Culture(commonly known as pop culture) has expressed itself through nearly every medium,including movies,music,and many others.Pop culture about movies,such as The Oscar Academy Awards ,which becomes one of the most famous ceremonies worldwide,is developing more and more ripely nowdays. Another aspect about American music since 1900 is also Leading the trend, take The American Music Awards as an example,which is considered the most representative of the mainstream music business indicators for its special mode of examination.

Review the American films’histories, when motion pictures in Europe were projected with the first projection device in 1895, similar machines were developed and first used to publicly exhibit movies in New York City in 1896. Later, America films gradually adapted to the citizens’needs and most of them at that time were melodramas and comedies.At first,films were sold directly to exhibitors. The first of these early theaters,which opened in Pittsburgh in1905,was called “nickelodeons”that was derived from the five-cent admission charge.In1909,Edison formed the Motion Picture Parents Company. At the same time,many independent film companies moved their studios to a suburb of Los Angeles which offered them more reliable sunshine as well as distance from Edison’s monopoly in the East. Hollywood, a rural suburb of Las

Angeles became the American movie capital after 1913. The most influential early film artist was Edwin S.Porter whose famous film called Life of an American Fireman used innovative editing to create a coherent narrative and another film called The Great Train Robbery also used editing techniques.Shortly before the outbreak of World War I, nickelodeons gradually were replaced by some better cinema.Film patent's monopoly power was gradually disappearing, and finally dissolved in 1915. At this point, Griffith as the representative of a new group of film artists had emerged. Producer Center also moved from the East Coast to Hollywood. World War I, to some degree, destroying and harming the developments of European film industry, had contributed to the flourish of American movies.

Then between 1916 and 1926 the American film industry came into the hands of a few powerful companies,which controlled production distribution,and exhibition.Furthermore, A studio hierarchy established consisted of the five “majors”-Fox,MGM,Paramount,RKO and Warner Brothers-and the “the little three”-Columbia,United Artists and Universal.Cynicism and sensuality among the upper classes characterized many of the 1920s features,and democratic optimism gave way to rampant materialism,

American popular music is also a part of American popular culture. Today,the body of these popular styles is recognized as significant

contribution to American musical development.What’s more,American popular music appeared early in the 19th century, and in the 20th century the American music industry developed a series of new forms of music, using blues and other elements of American folk music. These popular styles included country, R&B, jazz and rock. The period between 1960s and '70s witnessed a number of important changes in American popular music, including the development of a number of new styles, such as heavy metal, punk, soul, and hip hop. Though these styles were not popular in the sense of mainstream, they were commercially recorded and are thus examples of popular music.

So as what I accounted for,American popular culture is undeniably associated with commercial culture and defined as everything from “common culture”to “folk culture”,to“culture”.
