I. Reading comprehension Passage 1 Since its founding in 1948, McDonald's has grown from a family burger (汉堡包) stand to a global fast-food chain, with more than 30,000 locations in 118 countries. With 58 million daily customers worldwide, McDonald’s is now s o ubiquitous around the globe that The Economist publishes a global ranking of currencies' purchasing power based on the prices charged at the local McDonald’s, called the Big Mac Index (巨无霸指数).That’s not to say that every nation carries the same m enu i tems: choices vary widely depending on location. Some Asian locations serve fried shrimp in a Big Mac roll, while McDonald’s in India doesn’t serve beef at all, relying instead on burgers made from vegetables, rice and beans. Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he moves to town. Many s ee McDonald's as a symbol of American economic and cultural chauvinism (沙文主义), and European nations in particular have viewed American-style fast food as an insult to their national food. A French farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a group of people destroyed a McDonald's under construction to protest globalization and "bad food." The next year, a bomb e xploded in a French McDonald’s, killing a 27-year-old employee. (76) (76)No one claimed responsibility. But regardless of whether you like their food or their policies, McDonald’s is still widely seen as one of the true pioneers of peaceful globalization. 1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE. A. McDonald's was founded in 1948. B. McDonald’s has opened its restaurants in every city of the world. C. McDonald’s has over 30,000 locations in the world now. D. McDonald’s was very small in scale in the beginning. 2. The word ubiquitous in Paragraph 2 is most likely to mean ____. A. very crowded B. very dean C. existing everywhere D. occurring frequently 3. From Paragraph 2, we can conclude that ____. A. McDonald’s designs its menu to suit the local people B. millions of young adults got their first job with McDonald’s C. the McDonald’s menu sticks to old-fashioned favorites such as the Big Mac D. the low prices McDonald’s bring tens of millions of people through its doors every day 4. What did Jose Bove and his people do in 1999 to protest against McDonald's? A. They organized a strike. B. They protested outside a McDonald’s. C. They refused to go to a newly-built McDonald’s. D. They destroyed a McDonald’s under construction. 5. In ____, an employee died in a fatal bomb attack on a McDonald’s restaurant in France.

(1) "Family" is of course an elastic word. And in different countries it has different meanings. Butwhen British people say that their society is based on family life, they are thinking of "family"in itsnarrow, peculiarly European sense of mother, father and children living together in their own houseas an economic and social unit. Thus, every British marriage indicates the beginning of a new and in-dependent family--hence the tremendous importance of marriage in British life. For both man andwoman, marriage means leaving one’s parents and starting one’s own life. The man’s first duty willthen be to his wife, and the wife’s to her husband. He will be entirely responsible for her financialsupport, and she for the running of the new home. Their children will be their common responsibilityand their alone. Neither the wife’s parents nor the husband’s, nor their brothers or sisters, aunts oruncles, have any right to interfere with them-they are their own masters. Readers of novels likeJane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice will know that in former times, marriage among wealthy families were arranged by the girl’s parents, that is, it was the "parents' duty tofind a suitable husband for their daughter, preferably a rich one, and by skillful encouragement tolead him eventually to ask their permission to marry her. Until that time, the girl was protected andmaintained in the parents' home, and the financial relief of getting rid of her could be seen in theirgiving the newly married pair a sum of money called a dowry (嫁妆). It is very

Model Test 1 Passage One Suppose you set your mind to work on the problem of how you would use your own eyes if you had 3 more days to see. If with the oncoming darkness of the 3rd night you knew that the sun would never rise for you again, how would you spend those 3 precious days? What would you most want to let your gaze rest upon? I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear to me through my years of darkness. You, too, would want to let your eyes rest long on the things that have become dear to you so that you could take the memory of them with you in the night that loomed (降临) before you. I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me. I should want not merely the outline of her face, so that I could cherish it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence of the sympathetic tenderness and patience with which she accomplished the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her eyes that strength of character which has enabled her to stand firm in the face of difficulties, and that compassion for all humanity which she has revealed to me so often.

Hillary Rodham Clinton released the first television spot of her Senate campaign this morning, a 30-second commercial that will begin airing statewide on Thursday. The spot, titled “First,” uses numerous still photos to highlight landmarks in Mrs. Clinton’s career, while the voiceover says she is “more than a first lady.” There is no mention of Mrs. Clinton’s rival for New York’s Senate seat, New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson said the ad was “positive” and “biographical,” instead of focusing on the first lady’s opponent. Mrs. Clinton has previously aired radio ads, but has generally stayed with a strategy of making extensive campaign appearances instead of using television spots, while Giuliani has already run statewide TV ads. Text of Hillary Commercial: First she became a lawyer, named one of the top hundred in America. Her first cause was children, fighting abuse and chairing the board of the Children’s Defense Fund. Her first priority was public schools, helping to establish teacher testing. More than a first lady. For 30 years, she’s fought for children and families.

Part One Passage l Th is is a short passage about the wildebeest migration. Every year around April , many thousands of wildebeest gather together on the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania in preparation for their long journey northwards. Although it is often referred to as ‘The Migration' , this great movement of animals is an endless year - round trek dictated by the seasons and the search for fresh grass and water. By early July the long straggling columns of wildebeest , along with large numbers of zebra , begin to reach the Mara Reserve. They can enter anywhere and once inside their movements are erratic according to where forage is best. However, the herds do have one or two favorite river crossing places and after the Mara grasses have been gazed to the ground , they use these to move northwards out of the reserve. Weak animals rarely survive the river crossings. Many are crushed to death by the sheer weight of numbers and some are eaten by huge crocodiles. In late September. the herds begin to re- form for the journey back to the Serengeti Plains. They arrive three months later and begin calving. Read Passage 1 and decide whether the following statements are True or False. 1. In April the wildebeest travel from the Mara Reserve to the Serengeti. 2. The reason for ‘ T he Migration' is search for food. 3. In early June , the wildebeest reach the Mara Reserve. 4. The wildebeest' s movements are irregular when they go into the Mara Reserve. 5. At the end of the year , the wildebeest return to the Serengeti Plains and give birth to calves. Passage 2 This is a short passage about the monster and Frankenstein ? Some time later , Frankenstein received a letter from his father telling him that his young brother. William. had been murdered. All the family was shocked when Justine Moritz , the boy' s nanny , was accused of the crime and Frankenstein was horrified when she was executed for the murder because he felt that his monster had done it , not Justine. Throughout the following months , Frankenstein became more and more depressed. Then , one day when he was traveling in the mountains , trying to forget his troubles , Frankenstein suddenly met the monster. He shouted furiously at him , accusing him of the crime, and telling him to stay away from him and his family. But the monster insisted on talking to his creator and told him the sad story of his life since he had run away from the laboratory where Frankenstein had made him. The monster said that he had tried , in vain , to attach himself to humans , but nobody would have anything to do with him , because they found him so ugly and frightening. He told Frankenstein that even when he had saved a child who was drowning in a river , nobody thanked him. In fact , the father shot him in the shoulder because he was afraid of him.
