Lately, everywhere you look, people are running around with fitness trackers on their writs. Along with a smart phone and a companying app, these trackers can report how many calories you’ve burned and the distance you’ve traveled. Still curious about yourself? You

can also learn the number of stairs you’ve climbed and steps you’ve taken, metrics(度量) it had never occurred to me to wonder about.

Not one to resist peer pressure, however, I paid $100 for a Fitbit Flex. I chose that brand on the basis of research: asking my friend Sari which tracker she used.

The Fitbit website offered instructions on setting up my new tracker. I entered my height and gender(性别)and certain information I considered none of its business: birth date and weight. Then I established goals. The American Heart Association recommends we all walk 10,000 steps a day—about five miles, and so does Fitbit. I decided 6,000 steps was a good place for me to start.

I changed my tune when, on day one, I hit 6,000 steps and tiny LED lights flashed on my wristband. Confident enough now, I went back to my phone and upped my goal to 8,000 steps. OK. So I got a little obsessed(着迷). On day five at a department store, I decided to check my progress. My target number was just 275 steps away! I walked around the dress apartment watching my smartphone register each step I took. I hate to tell you how much pleasure this gave me.

Now I always wear my tracker, not because I’ve grown to love fitness but because I like being trendy and self-absorbed. Last night I was leaving a restaurant when Fitbit emailed to congratulate me on walking more than 10,000 steps. Who wouldn’t love a tool that turns your every footstep into an accomplishment?

25. Why do people wear fitness trackers while running?

A. To measure their blood pressure.

B. To tell them the right direction.

C. To report the amount of exercise.

D. To email information to others.

26. The underlined part “none of its business” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.

A. necessary

B. unimportant

C. priceless

D. ridiculous

27. The author started from 6,000 steps because ________.

A. it is the suggestion from Fitbit Flex

B. it is the best choice for beginners

C. the author wasn’t confident at first

D. the friend Sari asked the author to do so

28. What does the author think of the experience of using the tracker?

A. Thrilling and dangerous.

B. Painful and unbearable.

C. Boring and uncomfortable.

D. Joyful and encouraging.

The town is proud of powdery snow in the winters and cool summers, making it an inviting resort all year round. Free of crime and one of the cleanest cities in Morocco, it serves as the winter playground for the wealthy from the nearby cities. Have you heard of the “Doomsday(世界末日) clock”?

While the name sounds particular enough to draw our attention, there is no way to actually predict doomsday. The clock is a visual way of representing the dangers our world faces and the urgency to act—with midnight symbolizing doomsday.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, the organization that maintains the clock, decided to keep the clock at 3 minutes to midnight—the same as last year. Despite the Iran nuclear deal that weakened the threat of nuclear war, the organization continues to worry about the lack of progress on other global issues of concern.

The clock was created nearly 70 years ago by a group of scientists who had worked on the Manhattan project—that created the world’s first atomic bomb. The bombs were dropped on two Japanese cities. Though it brought an end to one of the worst wars in human history, the bombs also exposed the world to the dangers of nuclear technology.

One of the nuclear physicist on the Manhattan project was married to an artist named Martyl Kangsdorf. It was Martyl’s idea to create a clock and set the hand to seven minutes to midnight when it first created.

Since then, the clock has been a powerful way to show humanity how close the world is to catastrophe due to human action. To maintain this clock, every year twenty members of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists gather together and assess the biggest threats to humanity. When scientists looked back at the events of 2015, two significant threats continue to exist—climate change and investment in nuclear weapons by various nations around the world.

According to the scientists, we may be able to avoid disaster if humanity reduces spending on nuclear weapons, sharply reduces greenhouse gases, deals with commercial nuclear waste, and makes agreements to prevent the misuse of new technologies.

32. The Doomsday clock was created for __________.

A. reminding people of the painful past

B. correcting time to the same standard

C. predicting the doomsday of the world

D. warning humanity of the urgent threats

33. What does the underlined world “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. The doomsday clock.

B. The first atomic bomb.

C. Dropping the atomic bombs.

D. The Manhattan project.

34. What are considered the most urgent threats that today’s world faces?

A. Climate change and nuclear weapons.

B. High-tech war and space research.

C. Extreme poverty and serious diseases.

D. Natural disasters and low birth rate.

35. What can be inferred from this passage?

A. Human beings have no way to deal with their urgent threats.

B. The world will continuously face more threats whatever we do.

C. Martyl created the Doomsday clock just to amuse local citizens.

D. Most threats we face now are actually caused by humanity itself.

People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. A Heroic Driver Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc.
