阅读经典与英国文学教学

内容提要:改革开放以来,我国的英国文学教学取得了举世瞩目的成就。但是,目前英国文学经典文学作品阅读状况不甚令人满意。为进一步推动英国文学教学良性发展,培养下一代人的人文素质,英国文学教材编写、英国文学的教学以及与此相关的英国经典文学作品阅读应该引起大家的高度重视。

改革开放以来,停滞多年的外国文学教学开始复苏,包括英国文学在内的外国文学研究也如雨后春笋,蓬勃发展。经过二十来年的辛勤努力,我国的英国文学教学取得了举世瞩目的成就。主要表现在:

一、英语语言文学本硕专业增多,这些专业设置了英国文学课程。许多的综合性大学、师范院校和外语院校都恢复了英语语言文学学科,英国文学的教学和研究都有长足的进展。同时,由于我国建设事业走向世界,对外语尤其是英语人才的需要日渐增加,于是,许多工科院校也都增设了英语语言文学学科,招收本科学生。英语语言文学硕士、博士学位授权点也在大量增加。1979年,许多老牌院校批准设立英语语言文学硕士学位授权点,使英语语言文学学科的建设走上恢复和发展阶段。英国文学的教学和科研也逐步走向成熟和发展。近几年来,各院校都花大力气申办、建设英语语言文学学科博士学位授权点。这对推动英国文学的教学和研究都有十分良好的促进作用。

二、国家高等教育自学考试规模扩大,使英国文学的教学队伍不断壮大。伴随而来的,是英国文学教材的编写和出版有大幅度的提高。如果不把引进的教材(包括原版和译本)计算在内,英文版的英国文学史教材主要有刘炳善编著的《英国文学简史》、陈嘉编写的四卷本《英国文学史》以及由他的学生宋文林在此基础上缩写改编而成的《大学英国文学史》、范存忠所撰《英国文学史提纲》、金东雷所著《英国文学史纲》、Anne R ubinstein的《英国文学的伟大传统》、E lizabeth B.Booz编写的《现代英国文学简介》①、以及李公昭主编的《新编英国文学教程》。②作品选读方面主要有陈嘉选编的三卷本《英国文学作品选读》、杨岂深、孙铢主编的三卷本《英国文学选读》、罗经国选编的两卷本《新编英国文学选读》、王佐良、李赋宁、周珏良、刘承沛主编的《英国文学名篇选注》、李公昭主编的《新编英国文学选读》。史读合一的主要有张伯香主编的三卷本《英国文学教程》、一卷本《现代英国文学教程》、吴伟仁主编的《英国文学史及选读》、胡荫桐主编的《英国文学教程》、王佩兰等主编的《英国文学史及作品选

读》以及郭群英主编的《英国文学新编》。按文学样式分类的选读,诗歌方面主要有王佐良主编的《英国诗选》、顾子欣选编的英汉对照本《英诗300首》、何功杰编的《英诗选读》、王宝童编著的《英诗教程》、胡家峦选编的《英国诗选》③以及周考成选编的《英国浪漫主义时期诗歌选注》;小说选方面有上海外国语学院英语系选编的两卷本《英国短篇小说选》、朱虹选编的《英国短篇小说选》等;散文方面主要有吴景荣主编的两卷本《当代英文散文选读》,潘永主编的两卷本《现代英语散文读写教程》,戏剧方面有何其莘选编的《英国戏剧选读》、程雪猛选编的《英国戏剧选读》等。在中文版方面,英国文学通史、断代史、品种史以及其它形式的包括英国文学史章节或分卷的外国文学史十分丰富,数量达25种之多。这显示出我国包括英国文学在内的外国文学教学的巨大进步。

三、英国文学作品的翻译、出版和研究成果丰硕,不仅有各种国内翻译的英国文学作品,而且还有外语教学与研究出版社、商务印书馆、外文出版社、译林出版社等各大出版社引进的数百种原版的古典英国文学作品。同时,国外各大著名出版社出版的英国文学名著系列也在我国大小书店行销,主要有“企鹅丛书”、“矮脚鸡丛书”、“华兹华斯书系”等,仅莎士比亚作品原版就有多种版本在我国行销。④除开人民文学出版社出版的十一卷本以朱生豪译本为蓝本并进行修订、补译、增订的《莎士比亚全集》,近年又有新的增订本《莎士比亚全集》,由南京的译林出版社出版,同时还有梁实秋先生的译本,方平先生主持翻译的诗歌体《新莎士比亚全集》共12卷出版。继孙家王秀主编的《莎士比亚辞典》、朱雯、张君川主编的《莎士比亚辞典》之后,张泗洋主持编写了《莎士比亚大辞典》。最近,刘炳善夫妇穷11年精力编撰的《英汉双解莎士比亚大词典》已经出版。我国学者注释的莎士比亚著作丛书已出29种。

众多学者和翻译家倾力侈译包括英国文学作品在内的世界经典名著。人民文学出版社出版的(珍藏本)“世界文学名著文库”、教育部《中学语文教学大纲》指定书目中的“中学生课外文学名著必读”丛书、教育部全国高等学校中文学科教学指导委员会指定书目中的“大学生必读”丛书,上海译文出版社、译林出版社、中国对外翻译出版公司、北京燕山出版社等出版社出版的外国文学名著丛书,都包括了英国文学作品中的名家经典之作。我国翻译出版英国文学经典作品,无论规模还是水平,都达到了空前的境界。这为我国英国文学的教学,尤其是英国文学经典名著的阅读提供了十分良好的条件。

同时,我国的英国文学研究也十分活跃。除了《外国文学评论》、《外国文学研究》、《国外文学》、《外国文学》、《当代外国文学》、《世界文学》、《中国比较文学》、《四川外语学院学报》等主要刊载英国文学研究成果的期刊外,以往基本上只刊登外语语言及语言学类研究文章的《外国语》、《解放军外国语学院学报》、《福建外语》、《外语学刊》、《外语研究》、《西安外国语学院学报》、《外语教学》、《山东外语教学》、《山东师大外国语学院学报》等也开始有包括英国文学在内的外国文学研究文章出现。

应该看到,我国诞生出新一代英国文学研究方面的人才,培养出大量的学者和人才。英国文学教学与研究的队伍逐渐壮大起来。近年来我国培养出的博士在增多,有关英国文学的研究专著出版也在增多,英国文学教学和研究的学术团体和学术会议也在增多,去年十月在湖南湘潭召开的第三届全国英国文学年会盛况空前,与会者竟有100人之多,申办两年一次的小型会议和年会的单位多,竞争激烈,很多高校踊跃申请,要求成为全国英国文学学会的理事单位或常务理事单位。从国外学成回国的学者,开始大显身手,开始成为我国的英国文学教学和研究的中坚力量。

在英国文学教学方面,尽管有上述丰硕成果,但英国文学经典名著的阅读状况,跟理想的境界还有相当大的距离。

首先,在方法论的层面上,是两张皮的问题。中文系科的学生和学者往往还只能通过译作领略英国文学的丰采、神韵和美妙。于是,英国文学经典名著的阅读,对于不识英文或英文功力不足之人,成了一件纸上谈兵的事情。对于外文系的师生来说,很多人又分化到了ESP⑤那里去了,分化到语言学、翻译研究、双语词典研究、文化研究的阵营里去了,目前的文学教学与研究在萎缩,相反,语言学、翻译研究和辞典研究却在升温。语言学、翻译研究和辞典研究的学术活动进行良好,文学显得比较涣散。加之社会上目前普遍的浮躁、急功近利的心理作祟,人们要么不读文学作品,要么读那些流行、轻松、不太费脑筋的作品⑥,对于真正经典的传世之作,则只有浮光掠影、跑马观花了。

对于外国文学或称世界文学或比较文学,谁更具有充分的研究权利的问题,学术界一直争论不休,长时间以来没有定论。⑦从道理上讲,研究者是必须读原著的。牛津的博士生,有三至四年,或者更长的时间,进行阅读作者手迹能力的严格训练。国内中文界的学者研究国学时,有这种训诂的功夫。我们阅读他们的著述时,常常钦佩他们的这种功夫和修养。而我们外文学者在这方面,却有一个天然的缺陷:国学基础匮乏。而就中文学者而言,不能读其手迹,或只能读译作,难道没有不隔靴搔痒之嫌?解放前,外语学科没有叫“外语系”的,都叫“外文系”。那时文学是源头、出发点和根本。再加上“文史不分家”的传统学术观念深入人心,所以能诞生学贯中西的大师之才。而我们现在,英国文学研究分为三大阵营、三种思路、三种方法,即前文所说的“外国文学或称世界文学或比较文学”,情况自然如此。中、外学者之间,文人相轻,“老死不相往来”,久而久之,就造成了我国外国文学研究界的反常和怪异现象。其实,研究的多元并没有过错。借用孟子的话说,错就错在“失去本心”。根本的、实质的东西偏离了,异化了,何以能有正确的结果?如何解决问题?2001年10月,中外文语言及语言学学者曾汇聚大连,讨论此类问题。当然,仅靠一两次接触,无法解决全部问题。共识需要时间才能达成。笔者以为,中外文学者应该加强联系,互通有无。中文学者读原著;外语学者补国学。只有这样,中文学者所读所思所写所著才有合乎逻辑的依据;外文学者的理论功底和国学功底才能加强、提高,才能得出真正融合中西的新角度、新思想和新成果。同时,也就带动了英国文学经典名著的阅读。唯其如此,才能有效地指导学生阅读经典作品,领会英国文学的精髓和美妙。新出版的英语专业教学大纲给学生开列了一个不短的英、美、澳、加、爱等国的名著阅读书目;中文系科也有类似的文件。中文系科没有要求学生读原文,而是经过“二传手”传去的译作进行学习。这种情形应当有所改观,否则,英国文学教学也会受到影响。

其次,英国文学经典名著阅读的现状不容乐观。如前文所述,英国文学的研究存在三大阵营、三个方向。这种情形在学生读者群中也很相似。(1)ESP族。他们忙于阅读各种实用文体的材料,为的是他们的各种“特殊用途”,如工程英语、银行英语等。还有人忙着应付各种贴有各种标签,能证明他们所谓的英语语言能力的考试的挑战,如CET-4,CET-6,研考入学过关考试,TOFEL,GRE,IEL TS等等。⑧(2)流行曲歌咏族。他们阅读的是有关克林顿绯闻轶事,王妃黛安娜野史,流行于大街小巷、众人陌里的哈里·波特等等。(3)不识

阅读经典与英国文学教学

英文,只读译本族。他们的生命,靠的是人家的传译。译得好的,自然不在话下。译得不好,误读为之,得过且过,将错就错。加上译文本身就是二道贩子做的转手买卖,失去其中真谛,也是无可奈何的事。(4)潜心英国文学族。他们苦读原作,领略其中真味,大有“为有源头活水来”的感觉。这类读者,在英国文学研习者中是少数。

从阅读的数量和质量方面,我国英国文学教学中的经典文学作品阅读情况又表现为:从数量上说,相当多的本科学生未阅读到10种以上的经典名著。从质量上看,对于英国经典文学的阅读只限于“选读”阶段,整本阅读全书的情形很少。虽然新制定的本科英语专业教学大纲是统领全局的纲领性文件,其中开列了多种英、美、澳、加文学名著,英国所占篇幅不短,但实际上,英美文学课程学时严重不足。有的本科英语专业英美文学史及其选读总共只有32学时。另一方面,从各院校使用的英国文学教材看,书越编越薄,而且,这些教材当中,质量上存在较大问题的还比较多。

从出版与市场的角度看,各种流行读物充斥市场,与音响材料合一的读物,如疯狂英语系列、英语随身听系列很丰富,但经典文学作品相对数量不足,多见者有“企鹅丛书”、“矮脚鸡丛书”、“华兹华斯书系”,音文合一的有由外语教学与研究出版社出版的包括30部名著的“有声系列名著”,供初学者使用的“书虫系列”数种,但这其中有相当部分不是经典作品。

正如汉语的现代化即现代中国的西化一样,加强阅读英国经典文学作品,以推动英国文学教学,实质上是“引狼入室”,消灭汉语民族的文化个性。⑨但融合是大趋势,势不可挡是必然。虽然无可奈何花落去,但与其消极待毙,不如主动迎接时代的无情挑战,争取主动,消化吸收英国文学中透射出来的文化合理因素,为我所用。仿佛唯其如此,才能保存自我、个性和独立性。

那么,又为什么要重视和强调经典文学作品在英国文学教学中的作用?仿佛这个问题有必要进行一番探讨,否则,思想意识不澄清,行动难以落到实处。首先,经典文学作品体现了文学史上文学艺术的伟大成就,是一个民族、一个语种智慧的结晶。阅读经典文学作品,可以把握该民族文学艺术的脉搏,领略其中的这种精华;同时也可以作为他山之石引以为鉴。比如,要了解中国文化的深刻内涵和特殊风骚,就必须涉猎经子史籍。不读《诗三百》,不能了解先秦时期中国文学的风采与精神。不读李白、杜甫、白居易、韩愈、柳宗元,无以领略唐朝盛世的时代特色。对于宋词元曲明清小说,不读最伟大、公认最有价值,流芳千古的作品,不能说是了解了那个时代。高等学校中文学科教学指导委员会曾经给大学中文学科的学生开列过一个阅读书目,凡100种。⑩开列这些书目的依据,观察即可得知,就文学作品而言,包括了从古至今千百年流传下来的公认最优秀、最有价值的作品。南开大学中文系也曾给中文专业的学生开列了一个书目,古今中外,名著经典尽在其中。这个书目汇成一本书,成为国内各院校的辅助教材。该书还经修订、更新,台湾也把该书列入参考。1人民文学出版社等出版社出版了专家选评的“百年百种优秀中国文学图书”,所谓优秀图书,自然是经典作品的范畴。可以看出,对于阅读经典文学作品,至少在中文界,已经是广大学者、专家的共同认识。这从实践上说明,经典作品是最有生命力的,也是最应该阅读的。在英国文学的长河中,虽然彼岛国偏居一隅,却同样为人类奉献了诸如乔叟、莎士比亚、弥尔顿等文学泰斗。仅仅一个莎士比亚,就足以使英伦岛国自豪不已,足以使英语这种语言与日月同辉。不

读这些书卷,何以了解英国的民族文化和精神。不仅如此,文学语言是语言的精华,而经典文学作品又是文学中的精华,所以,要想获得一流的语言能力,舍此,没有其它可以调和的中间道路。再者,经典作品也是最具有美学价值的作品。阅读之,研究之,必定能趣味横生,让人感到享乐无穷。最终,在语言、美学、政治、历史、哲学、伦理等各个方面,使学习者的素质、精神、品德、修养提高到一个崇高的层次。于外语文学而言,还有一点好处是,理解了目的语民族的文学精华,便有利于认识这个民族的精魂,也便于进行日益频繁的跨文化交流。长远看来,才能真正领会、掌握目的语比如英国文学所含语言能力、理解能力、交际能力,以便有效传递我们自己民族的文化精髓,弘扬民族文化,树立民族自豪感和自尊心。那样,爱国,才能落到实处,中华民族屹立于世界民族之林也才真正有希望。经典作品是人类智慧的精华。每一位伟人,都是在巨人的肩头上站起来的。俄罗斯科学家罗蒙诺索夫有一句名言,“第一个教大学的必定从未上过大学。”可是,当今时代必须站在巨人的肩上,我们才能站立起来。就每一个个体而言,就每一个学生而言,莫不如此。巨人的思想,尤其是那些最有价值,历经沧海桑田传到今天的伟大思想,即是经典,是后人成长的源泉,其表现形式就经典作品。就文学作品而言,也概莫能外。这并不意味着我们必须把巨人的经典奉为圭臬,而是说,有这些精华,就可以启迪后来人的创新精神、创新意识和创新灵感。这是一个呼唤创新的时代,这是一个急需创新的时代。12我们的教育家,我们实践和研究外国文学教学的人,必须在理论的高度上认识经典作品而绝不是流行作品的地位和作用,绝不是在网页上下载一点花边新闻,应付一点对付对时髦语汇的好奇之心可以拯救我们的文学教育的。

本文所说的“经典文学作品”,是指全社会,尤其学术界公认的,经久不衰、流传于世的不朽之作。就英国文学作品而言,企鹅、牛津、诺顿等出版社出版的经典系列丛书中所列书目均属经典。如前文所及,我国“高等学校中文学科教学指导委员会”开列的书目,即在经典名著之列。13由于所涉及到的是英国文学教学,又尤其是本科层次的教学,本文只包括文学作品,不包括理论或者批评史或者理论史方面的著作。

教和学是相辅相成的两个方面,引导学生阅读经典名著,领会英伦文学的精妙,教师也应熟悉这些作品,同时还应该做深入的研究工作,为学术研究和文化建设做贡献,也为相关教学的提高做出贡献,起到良好的促进作用。大学教师是双重角色,具有双重使命。他既传授知识,也生产知识。新知识何来?必须通过阅读和研究方能实现。所以,只有教师通晓有关知识,才能较好地、有效地传达给学生;只有有所研究,才能在传达的同时启迪后学,培养既有知识,又同时具有能力的人才,培养具有创新精神,也具有创新能力的人才。不论学生,还是老师,阅读原著,阅读经典,是唯一的出路。舍此,无法企望文学教学水平提高。

关于对策,就教学而言,有两方面,一是要立足长远,提高读者群的英文水平;二是尽量指导和要求学生阅读经典名著。不妨以量化的指标促进学生阅读:毕业、学籍和学位都可以和经典作品的阅读挂起钩来。同时,开设经典名著阅读指导课,激发学生兴趣,引导学生,使其在理解、分析、思考等方法论方面有的放矢,提高效率。开办读经典名著的讲座,进行启蒙教育,使该思想春风化雨、深入人心。

就学者和英国文学的学术研究而言,大力提倡重读和细读经典名著。刊物发表论文时,鼓励深入讨论经典名著;开办专栏、组织专家讨论阅读经典名著的必要性和重大意义,回归源头,取材经典,创新现实,树立踏实、求实,由经典创新的良好学风。

阅读经典,还应在培养学风方面下功夫。阅读经典,是一个漫长的过程。只有踏实的学

习作风,能忍耐寂寞的毅力,才能最终获取蕴含智慧的精神食粮。

提倡阅读经典的意义,不仅在于提高我国英国文学教学的水平,还在于塑造民族的精神,吸收有益于我们自身的精神营养。总而言之,要想使我国的英国文学教学水平以致研究水平上迈步登上新台阶,阅读经典,是必经之道。

⑤本是English for Special Purposes之略,意为“特殊用途英语”。本文指倾全力学习阅读的应时的、技术性的材料,如所谓工程英语、旅游英语、经贸或商贸英语、银行英语、会计英语、计算机英语、饭店英语等等。阅读这些文献,可以为我国的物质建设做一些实在的事情,但对于培养民族民众的素质、塑造他们的灵魂而言,仅止步于此,是远远不够的。

英国文学史 Part one: Early and Medieval English Literature Chapter 1 The Making of England 1. The early inhabitants in the island now we call England were Britons, a tribe of Gelts. 2. In 55 B.C., Britain was invaded by Julius Caesar. The Roman occupation lasted for about 400 years. It was also during the Roman role that Christianity was introduced to Britain. And in 410 A.D., all the Roman troops went back to the continent and never returned. 3. The English Conquest At the same time Britain was invaded by swarms of pirates(海盗). It is Beowulf, the national epic of the English people. Grendel is a monster described in Beowulf. 3. Analysis of Its Content Beowulf is a folk lengend brought to England by Anglo -Saxons from their continental homes. It had been passed from mouth to mouth for hundreds of years before it was written down in the tenth century. 4.
