Topic: The only empress

in 5,000-year history of

China

——Wuze Tian

Of all the dynasties in all the countries in all the world, only she walks into our history.

For Chinese history, we totally have 83 dynasties, 559 emperors. Imperial system had been developing with Chinese civilization for more than two thousand years until the year 1911. When it comes to dominators, here may always some great kings or emperors come into our mind, like Alexander the great. Normally, those names we list are all male. We seldom think that women can stand at the peak of power . We have been living in male-centered society since ancient times, even now. Those 559 dominators, 558 were emperors, only one was empress. This only empress was a beautiful woman, named Wu Zetian. Today, I will try my best to cover three aspects I listed on my topic paper. I have to omit the second aspect because of the time limit. OK?

OK. At first, I want to describe her up-and-down road to the golden crown. When we look back on Zetian's life, we can find that her life was totally a legend. It will take too long if I fully describe her whole life. So I just choose three legendary stories to share with you today.

1、Marrying her husband's son

When she was a 14-year-old girl, Wu Zetian was screened into the royal palace and became one of the emperor's waives. You should know that, in ancient China, polygamy was the most natural and common thing. An ordinary man may have three wives and four concubines, let along an emperor. According to historical records, an emperor always could have at least 72 wives. Those women are the most beautiful girls in the whole country. Although Wu Zetian entered into the palace when she was very young, she just became one of Tang Taizong's assistances and served Taizong for ten years. The astonishing truth is that, in this period, Wu Zetian fell in love with one of her husband's sons, as a sovereign's wife! This son was becoming the next generation of emperor and was called as Tang Gaozong. And I must add that Gaozong was a little bit coward, soft-hearted and suspicious. He shouldn't have been appointed as a prince at that time.(Prince was regarded as the legally crown successor) But he was lucky

enough because his lover was Wu Zetian. Zetian was a very wise and sophisticated woman and she taught him how to behave and what to say in front of his father to cater to the emperor's heart. Thus, Gaozong loved her very much, regardless of the age gap between them, (Gaozong was younger than Wu Zetian for four years.) regardless of the mother-son relationship, regardless of the social moral principles. After Taizong's death, Wu Zetian was sent to a temper with other imperial concubines. They were all tonsured and ensured to spend the rest of their lives in praying to Buddha and doing all kinds of hard manual labors, Wu Zetian was no exception. But the woman we are talking about today was not a plain woman. She had undaunted courage and dogged willpower. She made every endeavor to survive in that adverse environment and try to keep touch with Tang Gaozong. She believed that her lover would come and save her. Two years latter, her hard work paid off. The present emperor, her lover, came to the little temper to see her. When she was 26 years old, she returned to the Tang Palace, with different statue and mood. She became one of Gaozong's concubines, finally.

2、Killing her beloved daughter

After returned to the palace,Wu Zetian was criticized by those conservative ministers, by the emperor's wives, by many common

people, even by people around her. All of the concubines paid joint efforts to try to get rid of her. She was always in a danger position. She knew, she must do something to protect herself and her kids. Otherwise all her efforts would pay in vain. She knew Gaozong loved her very much and she had opportunities to become a queen. One day, she got a chance that can help her get the queen crown. But the price was her beloved daughter's life. Without even a second's delay, she killed her daughter by her own hands. And she really became Tang dynasty's queen.

3、Becoming an empress

You may don't know that in ancient China, women was not expected to interfere in political affairs. Woman's job is staying at her room, doing housework, teaching her children, etc. Politics, military affairs are the businesses for male. Emperor's women were forbidden to care about the political affairs, otherwise she would be killed. But as I mentioned above, Tang Gaozong was a little bit weak and useless, so he couldn't deal with the whole country's affairs and fight with those fat cats who were against him. Thus, he always needed the queen's help. Wu Zetian gradually got hold of more real power in her hand. She replaced her husband to deal with political files. Wu Zetian broke so many rules. She got the right to sit together with Gaozong and discuss

political things with emperor and high officials everyday. She was the first, also, the last woman in the history who had this privilege. Since then, she helped Gaozong create a flourishing age. The economic developed well. People lived a better life. The territory was gradually expanding. She got praised by the common people all of the country. But, those peaceful days wouldn't last long. One day the suspicious emperor was tricked by some bad men into believing that his queen was planning to kill him. He decided to declare that Wu Zetian was no longer a queen. But Wu Zetian clarified what happened in time. After this, Wu Zetian realized that her life was still controlled by somebody else, not by herself, although she dedicated so much to her husband and the nation. She made up her mind to become an empress. After Tang Gaozong's death, she declared to the whole country she was the empress who would rule everybody in this country. That year, she was 66 years old. Another prosperous dynasty born. As a legendary queen, her up-and-down road to the peak of power was recorded in royal history.

In her age of82, She died with a tablet without a word standing in front of her grave. No one knows why she didn't leave one word for posterity. During her reign, she gave more rights to women. She allowed women to have their own property.

She employed talent women as officials. Woman's statue had greatly raised. She was a bold reformer who created KE-JU educational system which has influenced China till today. She had dark sides, too. She bloodily removed her enemies. She bloodily killed many people, including her two sons and one daughter. Everybody has a different comment on her, some are good ,some are bad. I think this is the reason why she left a wordless gravestone for us. Maybe she had known she will became a controversial empress. Maybe she had known she will be the only woman who performed this miracle. Maybe she didn't know how to describe her own life. But, history did gave us a very very very amazing woman!
