各国名人英文介绍-Barack Obama

Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States of America. He is also the winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. He made history in 2008 when he won the U.S. presidential election. He is the first African American to be Presid ent. Obama’s charisma, intelligence, and powerful speeches have made him extremely popular with many Americans. He has been very successful with his message for change.

Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961 to a black Kenyan father and white American mother. His parents divorced and his mother married an Indonesian man. Barack’s family moved to Indonesia in 1967. He attended schools in Jakarta until he was ten years old, when he returned to Hawaii. Obama majored in political science and international relations at Columbia University in New York.

After four years in New York, Obama moved to Chicago. There, he worked as the director of a community project from 1985 to 1988. He entered Harvard Law School and became the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. Obama taught law at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years. He became an Illinois Senator in 1996.

In 2004. Obama was elected as a U.S. Senator. He supported legislation on conservation, energy, immigration and honest leadership. Obama is currently battling with serious issues such as the economy, the global credit crisis and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is internationally famous for hosting the most popular talk show on American television. Millions of TV viewers tune in worldwide every day to watch her. She has become a household name and is now one of the richest women in the world. She is also famous for raising millions of dollars for charities to help with child literacy.

Oprah was born in 1954 in Mississippi. She experienced child abuse as she grew up, which led her to campaign for children’s rights later in her life. She helped draft a bill that President Clinton passed into law. Her career in broadcasting started in 1971 and her big breakthrough came in 1976 with her own extremely popular TV chat show –'People Are Talking'.

In 1985 movie producer Steven Spielberg offered her a role in 'The Color Purple'. She was nominated for an Oscar at the Academy Awards for her performance. She used her newfound international fame to launch the 'Oprah Winfrey Show'. This opened all kinds of doors for her she had never dreamed of. The world was her oyster.

Her chat show is broadcast to over 100 countries. 'Life' magazine called her the most influential woman of her generation. She has raised nearly $100 million for charity. She is now a role model for millions of girls around the world. Her latest project is an academy for poor girls, which opened in South Africa in 2007.
