Can food be free, fresh and easily accessible? That's the bold(大胆的) question that the city of Seattle is hoping to answer with a new experimental farm not far from the city's downtown area that will have fruits and vegetables for anyone to harvest this fall.

On Beacon Hill, just south of central Seattle, landscape developers and a few affordable -food advocates are building an eatable food forest. Everything grown in the area will be eatable. And it'll be open around the clock to anyone who wants to come and pick some fresh blueberries or pears.

Organizers shared with National Geographic a list of the crop offerings. Many are expected: apples, berries and tomatoes. But others are pretty far-out. A large Asian community in the area suggested things like Asian pears and honeyberries. A European influence led to the planting of medlar trees.

The concept is modeled on permaculture, a design system and school of thought emphasizing the use of renewable nature resources and the enrichment of local ecosystems. Offering people free, fresh food is one motivation, but making the land useful and ecologically enriched is the larger goal.

That being said, some potential problems come to mind. What if all of one fruit is gone the first weekend when it's ripe? What if people pick things too early and spoil the potential for everyone?

Organizers aren't concerned about those questions. “We've had many discussions about what would happen if someon e comes and picks all the blueberries,”says Margarett Harrison, the landscape architect designing the project.“But that's been considered as a good thing. We'll just plant more.”

Anything related to agriculture and good food—in large quantities—takes time. Most of the trees won't be mature enough for a few more years. But a few decades could make the area impressively productive.

Idealistic?Perhaps. But it's the kind of idealism that anyone who likes to ea t fresh things from time to time can get behind. And that's the type of motivation that organizers hope will keep going.

21.What can we learn about the food forest?

A.It's the first of its kind. B.It proves to be a big success.

C.It now offers free food to people. D.It's popular among the local people. 22.Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________.

A.the crops that will be harvested this fall B.people's attitude towards the project C.which communities live in the area D.how the food selection was made 23.What's Margarett Harrison's attitude towards the potential problems the forest may face?

A.Concerned. B.Cautious. C.Optimistic. D.Uninterested.

Once upon a time, there was an empty storybook. The book looked great, with an impressive cover, but all its pages were blank. You can imagine how people felt when they picked up the book with great hope. The y would always throw it away at last.

Not far from there,a lovely inkwell(墨水池) had been full of ink for years, but forgotten and left in the corner by his owner. Complaining about their bad luck, the inkwell and the storybook just spent their days.

As S.Kamakshi and her friends play kho kho on the playground of the Chennai Higher Secondary School in Thiruvanmiyur, a distant eye is systematically watching them. The CCTV camera(监控摄像机) here has been installed(安装) as part of an experimental project.

According to A.P.Subramanian, assistant headmaster, the public school has four cameras. The cameras have been in place for close to 45 days. Headmistress K.B.Gomathi says that since only two night watchmen guard their large campus, the modern technology helps greatly in terms of security. Four more cameras, she says, will be installed. Its role in keeping discipline(纪律) is only an added advantage.

When asked about how they felt about the cameras, students listed things they could no longer do—they would not be able to drop litter on the playground, they would no longer be able to get into fights. Beyond all that though,N.Shalini and her friends say that if someone fell down and injured his leg while playing on the field, they would be conscious of the fact that their teachers would come to his aid immediately.

Jeyapriya R.,a teacher at the school, however, raises a fundamental question. For how long can students be disciplined by a camera? Discipline, she says, has to come from the inside of an individual's mind.“But when students have a quarrel, and parents come asking,we have the evidence to show them,”she adds.

Unlike public schools, private schools in the city have been using CCTV cameras for a few years now. A jeeth Prasath Jain, headteacher of Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram, says that his school's 80 cameras were installed five years ago an d have been helpful in keeping a watch on the children.“We abstain_from installing cameras in classrooms because we do not want to rob the student and the teacher of their freedom. They have been installed only in the movement areas and the labs,”he says.

Educationist S.S.Rajagopalan, however, says, “This system is based on the mistaken assumption that children will behave only when watched,” he says. Children,he adds, are very likely to misbehave in a controlled atmosphere, and must be given the freedom to be children.

28.The Chennai Higher Secondary School will install more CCTV cameras mainly to ________.A.keep the students' discipline B.improve the safety of the campus

C.use more advanced technology D.avoid complaints from parents

29.N.Shalini will probably agree that CCTV cameras ______.

A.can help children in danger B.will limit students' freedom

C.prove to be almost useless D.raise her fear of crime

30.The underlined part “abstain from”in Paragraph 5 can best be replaced by “________”.A.avoid B.suggest C.admit D.consider

31.Who takes a negative attitude to CCTV cameras in school?

A.A.P.Subramanian. B Jeyapriya R.

C.Ajeeth Prasath Jain. D.S.S.Rajagopalan.

Health campaigns aimed at keeping teens and others from drinking and driving, smoking and other risky behaviors often use shame and guilt to get their messages across. But a new study finds anti-drinking advertisements can actually lead some audiences to increasing binge drinking(酗酒).

“The situation is worse than wasted money or effort,”said researcher Adam Duhachek.“These ads finally may do more harm than good because they have the potential to cause more of the behavior they're trying to prevent.”

“The conventional wisdom from people who design these ads is,‘If we scare people enough it's always going to be a good thing.’”Duhachek said.“But we've shown there are circumstances where they are not only effective, but cause a strong negative reaction that leads people actually to drinking more than they would if they were exposed to the ads.”

They tested two advertisements that showed the back of a person hugging a toilet bowl(抽水马桶)after a night of drinking. One advertisement, the guilt-inducing one, included information about the negative consequences a person's drinking could have on friends and

family, such as causing car accidents. The other shame-inducing advertisement showed what friends and family would see, including watching the drunk person get into a car accident or get arrested.

To work out why the advertisements might increase drinking, the researchers asked participants how likely they thought it was that they and others would suffer the negative consequences of drinking, such as getting into fights or getting sick. Students who saw the advertisements were less likely to think they were at risk than other groups.

In another part of the study, students who had looked at the advertisements tended to rate their friends as being at risk of the negative consequences, but not themselves.

Duhachek's advice:If you want to positively influence drinking, make sure the campaigns convey both the terrible con sequences and an inspiring message.“If you're going to try to arouse fear, temper (使缓和)it with the idea that the danger can be avoided,”he said.“It's always best to use a carrot along with the stick.”

32.According to Duhachek, the present anti-drinking advertisements usually ________.A.are a good use of money and effort

B.lead to the results the designers intended

C.attempt to frighten people out of risky behaviors

D.cause people to feel ashamed and guilty

33.Duhachek supports his argument by ________.

A.telling an interesting story about drinkers B.presenting the results of his study C.describing an accident D.testing the idea by reasoning 34.Which of the following would Duhachek agree with?

A.Carrots can reduce the negative effects of drinking.

B.Severe punishment should be given to drinkers.

C.Drinkers should attend alcohol-addiction programs.

D.Both inspiring messages and danger should be conveyed by advertisements.

35.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Anti-drinking advertisements lead to more drinking in some people.

B.Anti-drinking advertisements lead to more car accidents.

C.People feel guilty after viewing anti-drinking advertisements.

D.Many people think they are at greater risk from drinking than their friends are. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Here are tips for a successful speech from a professional speechwriter:

No speech should last more than 20 minutes. 36 The Sermon on the Mount, a collection of sayings and teachings of Jesus, for example, lasted hardly more than three minutes.

Focus on one topic. We're human and tend to have lots of thoughts, opinions and ideas. You have to make proper selection. 37 Include and expand only those that explain and support your viewpoint(观点).

38 It's important to remember that your words must be hearable and understandable the first time out.

Humour is vital. 39 Ronald Reagan always wanted to joke at the start of a speech because he needed the quick victory of laughter. It helped him relax. It also helped the audience relax.

Don't forget to say thanks. You should always, at the beginning of the speech, thank the person who invited you and introduced you. 40 While you're doing it, the audience gets a chance to daydream and settle down. They're going to daydream at some point anyway, and it may as well be before yo u get to the heart of your remarks.

A.Choose your words carefully.

B.And saying thanks at the beginning has a practical purpose.

C.First you have to work out what you're going to say.

D.Every speech needs it, and you need it, too, probably at the beginning.

E.Stick to one subject—the future of the soccer club, for example.

F.This process takes time, so start once you begin thinking about the speech.

G. The more important the message is, the less time it requires to say it.
