When I entered Berkeley, I hoped to earn a scholarship. Having been a straight-A student, I believed I could take tough subjects and really learn something. One such course was World Literature run by Professor Jayne. I was extremely interested in the ideas he presented in class.
When I took the first exam, I was shocked to find a 77, C-plus, on my test paper. English was my best subject.
I went to Professor Jayne, who listened to my arguments but remained unmoved.
I decided to try harder, although I didn’t know what that meant because school had always been easy for me. I read the books more carefully, but got another 77. Again, I reasoned with Professor Jayne. Again, he listened patiently but wouldn’t change his mind.
One more test before the final exam. One more chance to improve my grade. So I redoubled my efforts and, for the first time, learned the meaning of the word ―thorough‖. But my efforts were no good and everythin g went as before.
The last hurdle (障碍) was the final. No matter what grade I got, it wouldn’t cancel three C-pluses. I might as well kiss the scholarship goodbye.
I stopped working hard. I felt I knew the course material as well as I ever would. The night before the final, I even treated my self to a movie. The next day I decided for once I’d have fun with a test.
A week later, I was surprised to find I had got an A. I hurried into Professor Jayne’s office. He seemed to be expecting me. ―If I gave you the As you expected, you wouldn’t continue to work as hard.‖
I stared at him, realizing that his analysis and strategy (策略) were correct. I had worked my head off, as I had never done before.
I was speechless when my course grade arrived: A-plus. It was the only A-plus on the course. The next year I received my scholarship. I’ve always remembered Professor Jayne’s lesson: you alone must set your own standard of excellence.

London Bridge is a bridge between the city of London and Southwark in London, over the River Thames.
2000 years ago, the Romans built the first wooden crossing over Thames. The Saxons continued the tradition, although through accident and warfare the structures were partially destroyed on many occasions.
In 1209, the Normans constructed a stone bridge with 19 small arches. Finally it was full of houses, shops and even a church on the top, which with repairs was to last for the next 800 years.
In 1831, King William Ⅳopened the strong modern bridge with five arches which was used throughout the Victorian period, and survived the two world wars of the twentieth century. In 1973 it was sold, transported and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. It consists of a concrete frame with stones from the Old London Bridge.
The current London Bridge was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson. The senior engineer was Alan Simpson, the superstructure (上部结构)was designed by team led by Michael Leeming, and foundations by a team led by g. The bridge was constructed by John Mowlem and Co from 1967 to 1972, and opened by Queen ElizabethⅡon 17 March, 1973. It consists of three spans of concrete box girders(大梁), a total of 928 feet (283m) long. The bridge was built to be functional and immortal, and, it is obviously less decorated than other Thames bridges. The current bridge was built in the same location as Rennie’s bridge, with the previous bridge remaining in use while the first two new girders, and the previous bridge was destroyed to allow the final two central girders to be added.
The current London Bridge is often shown in films, news and documentaries showing the crowds of people traveling to work into the city from London Bridge Station (south to north). A recent example of this is actor Hugh Grant crossing the bridge north to south during the morning rush hour, in the 2002 film About a Boy.

I used to catch myself saying, ―If I had more money, then I wouldn’t have to worry about …‖ But do you know what? I don’t have to worry anyway. I can control my income. I can contr ol my outgo. I can make choices that can reduce any of my worries. I also realize that things always work out. So why worry? I choose not to worry.

FOR more than 120 years, people have set their clocks to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, 格林尼治时间) based on the sun’s journey across the zero-degree meridian (子午线) at the Greenwich Observatory (格林尼治天文台) in southeast London.
However, GMT is not accurate enough for the modern world, according to scientists. So lead scientists from around the world met in Britain between November 3 and 4 to discuss whether GMT should be replaced by a new system of timekeeping based on atomic (原子的) clocks instead of the rotation of the Earth. The final decision will be taken by vote in January 2012 in Geneva, according to the report by AFP (法新社).
GMT was made the world standard fo r time in 1884. But it wasn’t long before scientists realized that the Earth’s rotation is not only unstable. This means GMT is not very precise, but is also slowing down.
In order to get the right time, scientists introduced UTC – Universal Coordinated Time (协调世界时) in 1972. This is based on about 400 atomic clocks from laboratories around the world and is very accurate. However, be cause of the tiny differences between the Earth’s speed and atomic speed, every few years scientists have to take one second away from UTC so that it is in line with the rotation of the Earth. These are known as ―leap seconds‖. This can cause confusion inside computers, GPS and cell phones, which need accuracy to the millisecond. Even a small mistake could cause disaster.
This is why some scientists say that worldwide time should be based entirely on atomic clocks. But there is also a problem. If GMT is abandoned, the difference between UTC and the Earth’s rotation(旋转)will get bigger and bigger, about one minute of error every 60 to 90 years. ―About 7,000 or 8,000 years later our midnight could happen when UTC clocks were showing noon‖, said Dong Shaowu, an expert with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, to Xinhua News Agency.
Clearly there is one big question at the heart of the UTC/GMT debate – should we measure time according to the needs of science or our daily lives?
