Unit 9 Shopping

1. Reading for Information

1) basement 7) basement

3) third floor 9) third floor

4) ground floor 10) second floor

2. Describing the Cartoons

1) ①b ②a ③d ④c

2) ①Two youngsters are coming out of a health food store. One of them is having some

ice-cream. He explains to his friend that the health food store sells junk food (candy, sweets, etc.) secretly. Normally a health food store only sells wholesome, healthy foods.

②A big woman is climbing onto a floor refrigerator trying to find the freshest milk. Her

handbag is on the floor. A shop assistant is standing beside her and looks puzzled. He says: “Madam…the dates on the milk are all the same.”

③This scene takes place in the paint department of a large store. A woman is holding a

bottle of paint in her hand. She wants to show that the pain t doesn’t spray, so she sprays it.

But unfortunately this time the spray works and it sprays directly onto the shop assistant’s face. Now the shop assistant’s face looks black.

④A woman is standing in front of an ad. The ad has two magnetic bar codes and says:

“TODAY ONLY”, “MARKED DOWN TO”. It is intended to tell consumers that there is a sale. But it doesn’t provide any more information than that. Obviously people don’t know what is on sale or the actual price, since the magnetic bar codes can only be read by electronic scanners. So the woman looks confused.

3. Getting to Know Each Other’s Shopping Habits

Samples

― I go shopping once a week and buy some food, such as fruit, cookies, and some stationery. I usually go shopping with my roommates. I enjoy window shopping when I have time. I get the information from newspapers, TV commercials and also my friends. If my friends recommend a particular brand, I’ll buy that myself. I think a private source is more reliable than ads.

― I usually don’t spend much time shopping because I don’t have a lot to buy while at school. My mom does most of the shopping for me before I come to school each new semester, such as clothing, shoes and other daily use items she can think of. At school, I often buy fruit, candies, cookies, drinks, exercise books, stationery, etc. These things are available at campus stores and shopping of this kind can be done on the way to the classroom or back. Sometimes I’ll go down town to buy books and CDs, probably once a month. Very often with my classmates or high school friends who are studying in the same university as I do. I just buy what I need immediately or what I think is good. Shopping is not very important to students, I think.

4. Where would You Like to Make Your Purchase?

Samples

―I would definitely like to make my purchase in a supermarket, because compared to other types of shops, supermarkets are more convenient and consumer-friendly. Numerous kinds of commodities are available in a supermarket, which grants us abundant options that we cannot find in any grocery or roadside stores. What’s more, in supermarkets, customers are free to look at and pick up the things they like and are allowed to return goods to the shelves if they decide not to take them after a second thought. This form of consumption avoids some embarrassment which is likely to take place in a department store between shop assistants and consumers. In a word, as a purchaser, I find shopping in a supermarket the easiest, the fastest and the most comfortable. So I prefer to go shopping in supermarkets rather than in other kinds of stores.

―I prefer to go to a department store, or rather a shopping mall. There are varieties of goods for you to choose, and you can always find something you want. Unlike supermarkets, which only provide cheap and common items, department stores have many more categories.

Besides, the latest fashions can only be found in department stores.

―I think it depends on what you are going to buy. I don’t always make my purchase in just one place. I usually buy some daily necessities in a supermarket, such as food, stationery and so on.

Since we've got so many supermarkets around us, it's very convenient. And you can freely choose what you like. But when it comes to clothing or something quite important, I'd like to go to the department store because of its comfortable atmosphere and the reliable quality.

In addition, you'd better listen to the introduction from the shop assistants while buying something expensive.

She likes to go to the grocery store around 9 o’clock in the morning when it is not the rush hour. When she goes to the market, she doesn’t like to bargain with vendors, she thinks it’s a waste o f time. According to her, the money saved is not worth the effort. Time is money!

For major purchases, we usually go together as a family, so that I can have a word as to which brand to buy. Once we bought a TV set. During the process of decision making, my mother wanted to buy a TV set made by a local factory so that we could have better service if anything went wrong with it. But I insisted on buying a different brand that was of better quality. But the manufacturer was in another city. I tried to convince my parents that with a high quality product, it would save us a lot of trouble and time in maintenance. And if the quality was poor, we wouldn’t feel happy to enjoy the good after-sale service. Finally, my parents agreed with me and bought the one I suggested.

PASSAGE II

3. An Effective Complaint Letter

Dear Mr. Harrison

Jan. 10, 2005, I purchased a Speedo Vacuum Cleaner Model XYZ from The Floor Store, 212 Main Street, Columbus, N. J. 1) (A copy of the receipt is enclosed.) 2) Unfortunately, I have had problems with both the product and the service I have received.

Specifically, I have the following complaints: 3)

First, the vacuum doesn’t work efficiently to pick up dust or dirt on either bare floors or carpets. Even after I have gone over the same area several times, the dirt remains. The power shuts off by itself when the vacuum has been running for several minutes, then comes back on after 30 to 60 seconds.

Second, when I went back to at the Floor Store, I was told that because the vacuum was on sale, I could not exchange or return it, which I was not told when I made the purchase. I was also treated rudely by the salesman, Robert Rule, and then by the manager, Alfred Adams.

I am requesting that you provide me with a new vacuum cleaner, on condition that if this one

proves to be unacceptable, I will receive a refund. 4) I also ask that you investigate the business practices of the First Store, as they are poor representatives of your company.

I can be reached during the day at (806) 827-9318 or after six in the evening at (806)

Yours truly,

S: I’m sorry. What’s wrong with it?

C:I bought it here a week ago. I have hardly used it, but it doesn’t work any more. Here is the receipt.

S: What’s the problem?

C: There are two things wrong with it. One is that it won’t rewind. The other is that the sound is not clear. It’s very noisy.

S: Let me see. No, you are right. It doesn’t work very well. But I’m afraid I will have to ask the manager. Could you please leave your name and telephone number so that I can contact you later?

C: Yes, this is my business card. But would you please give me a copy of the receipt I gave you and write down my two complaints? I would like to have a new tape recorder. I don’t want that one back.

S:I’ll get you a copy immediately and I’ll write your complaints on it. I’ll tell the manager you want a new tape recorder.

C: Thank you.

Supplementary Activity:

Directions: There are five consumer rights. See which group can get all of them correct.

Key:

1. The right to choose

2. The right to information

Consumers have the right to accurate and complete information about all products in order to make a free choice.

3. The right to safety

Consumers have the right to expect that anyone trying to sell them services or products has taken the consumers’ health and safety into consideration.

4. The right to be heard

Consumers have the right to register dissatisfaction and have a complaint heard when their interests are badly served.

5. The right to consumer education

5. What to Buy

Samples

-- I would first buy a set of Jin Yong’s novels without doubt. Though I have already had a good knowledge of his famous novels and even some details of the characters in his books, I

really appreciate his books and would like to have a set of my own. It is well worth buying for me, and it is just like an old friend who can remind me of my happy childhood occasionally. Besides, I’d like to buy some DVDs and some books which I have been dreaming of. I like movies, old and modern as well as those classic novels.

--To me, a mobile phone nowadays has truly become a necessity especially for students away from home for the sake of convenience. With this in hand, contacting parents and friends is nothing difficult but can be done at any time and at any place. We can share news and feelings so we won’t feel lonely. I am among the kind of people who miss their parents when far away from home. Because of this, I would like very much to get my mum a mobile phone since her old one has long been “going on a strike”. If I do so, both of us will be happy.

-- My choice is a camera! Since our university has five beautiful campuses, and each has it own beautiful scenery, especially Yuquan campus and Zijingang campus. So what I want to do is to take pictures everywhere on campus, not only of the nice views, but also of all my lovely schoolmates and teachers, and of all the unforgettable stories happening around us. So when I finish my 4-year college life, I do have something to keep my memories fresh for all my life. To me, college years are the most precious time in my life. I really don’t want to have nothing to look back on after years.

--I’ll buy a television (maybe a small one) that can be put in the dormitory. My reasons are as follows: Our college shouldn’t be the so-called “ivory tower” which is not associated with the whole society. Students should be concerned with the outside world and they really are. In addition, they sometimes need to escape from study and relax themselves. In this respect, TV can be a good helper. We receive information from both eyes and ears whereas newspapers can never have the same effect.

6. A Shopping List

Sample 1

1. Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, apple juice, orange juice, green tea, black tea, coffee,

milk, mineral water: Drinks are apparently necessary in a party, and since people have different preferences, many different kinds of drinks are listed.

2. toy guns, BB bullets, balls, pokers: These are for entertainment activities.

3. balloons, colored ribbons, artificial flowers, colorful paper: These are decorations for the

classroom to create a happy atmosphere.

4. strawberries, apples, oranges, chestnuts: Seasonal fruits and healthy nuts are always welcome

in a party.

5. pencils, ball-pens, accessories: These are prizes for winners in small games.

Sample 2

1. cookies, chocolates, candies, potato chips, melon seeds: Food and especially snacks are always

necessary for a party.

2. Chinese knots, lanterns (if possible), balloons: Decorations can help create a warm,

united and amicable atmosphere especially for a class with students from different parts of the country.

3. CD Player, some CDs of pop singers: The party will be surely boring without music and all

these can be prizes for the winners of the games later on.

Part Four Writing and Translation

1. Knowing About Translation

2. Translation Practice

1) Real bargains are beneficial to customers. Consumers are willing to buy products of (a) high quality at a low price. However, some bargains in some shops are poor in quality. Consumers will be cheated if they buy them. Therefore, one has to be careful in buying bargains. It may take him a lot of time to hunt for real bargains. In addition, what the purchasers should pay attention to is that they shouldn’t buy things they don’t need though the y are bargains. Otherwise, they are just wasting money.

2) Shopping is closely related to media. A lot of the consumers buy products under the influence of advertisements. These ads provide people with all kinds of information about different items. No wonder manufacturers spend a lot of money to advertise their products through various media. Nowadays, Internet, as a new medium, is playing a more and more important role in shopping. It is faster, easier and more convenient. Shopping on the Net is likely here to stay.

3. Writing

1)

On Bargains

Sample 1

Bargains are products that are reduced in price. Some bargains are real bargains, because they are cheaper in price but the quality is quite good. Some bargains are of very poor quality because the shopkeeper merely marks prices higher than normal and then marks them down. This is, in fact, a trick to cheat customers. I think this kind of bargain is bad and should be prohibited.

But I like real bargains. It is important to be able to buy goods you want with less money. But it takes a lot of time, you have to hunt for bargains. Once I bought a pair of leather shoes at half price.

I felt very happy. But sometimes I feel cheated when the shop assistant says that the original price was 300 yuan, for example, but now it’s only 100 yuan and I know he is not telling the truth. Some customers who cannot resist the temptation will buy the product. Later when they find out that they have been cheated, they will be very angry.

In a word, bargains are good if they are real bargains. However one has to be careful in buying bargains. It’s also wise never to buy anything you don’t really need just because it’s cheap. (211 words)

Sample 2

There are a lot of bargains in stores and shopping centers, as we can find when we go shopping. I think these bargains are good for consumers even if the price has been reduced only a little.

There are many reasons why there are so many bargains. Some shops mark down prices in order to attract customers, some in order to defeat their rivals in the market competition, and some to sell their goods as quickly as possible. Though they cut prices, shops can still make money from the goods. But we, the customers, can spend less money on the same commodities, so we welcome bargains.

Though the re are a lot of bargains, we shouldn’t buy things if we don’t need them. Otherwise we are just wasting money. We should buy only what we really need. If we can do that, bargains can really be useful for us and we can really save money.

So I think bargains are good and we need them. However, we should always be careful when we are tempted by a bargain. It pays to be an intelligent shopper. (184 words)

2)

Media and Shopping

Sample 1

Nowadays shopping is closely related to media. When you read the morning newspaper, when you watch TV, or listen to the radio, you see and hear many advertisements about various products. The advertisers make every effort to stimulate consumers to purchase. I like watching ads on television, not only because they provide information but also because they are often cleverly or beautifully designed. Sometimes I buy a brand only because I have seen it advertised on television. So I’m like most people. My shopping behavior is influenced by the media.

To a certain degree, people trust media more than themselves. They might buy something that does not look perfect, but because it was advertised in the media, they will buy it. Perhaps people trust the media too much, and just listen to what the ads say.

However, the media help stimulate consumption. Consumers are informed quickly and they are urged to buy and spend their money. (156 words)

Sample 2

I think media such as TV, radio and newspapers affect people’s shopping behavior greatly. The most common way is through advertisements or commercials. We can see or hear ads everywhere, in newspapers, in streets, on buses or on the radio. We are usually interested in these ads and often want to buy the products advertised. This is just what the manufacturers hope for. They spend a lot of money to advertise their products through various media. The ads can provide you with a lot of information about the various items. So ads are beneficial not only to manufacturers but also to shoppers.

In modern society, computers have also become a new medium. People get information about the products on the Internet. This is a faster, easier and more exact way for both shopping and advertising than any others. I think the Internet will play an increasingly important role in people’s shopping.(151 words)

Unit 7 The Joy of Travel

Unit 7 The Joy of Travel Transformative Travel Twenty-five years ago I felt like a wreck. Although I was just 23, my life already seemed over. The future appeared as much like a wasteland as the emptiness I could see while looking back to the past. I felt lost, without choices, without hope. I was stuck in a job I hated and trapped in an engagement with a woman I didn't love. At the time, both commitments seemed like a good idea, but I suppose it was the fantasy of being a successful, married businessman that appealed to me far more than the reality. I decided to take a class just for the entertainment value. It happened to be an introductory counseling course, one that involved personal sharing in the group. We were challenged to make commitments publicly about things we would like to change in our lives, and in a moment of pure impulsiveness, I declared that by the next class meeting I was going to quit my job and end my engagement. A few days later I found myself unemployed and unattached, excited by the freedom, yet terrified about what to do next. I needed some kind of transition from my old life to a new one, a sort of ritual that would help me to transform myself from one person into another. So I did something just as impulsive as my previous actions: I booked a trip for a week in Aruba. In spite of what others might have thought, I was not running away from something but to something. I wanted a clean break, and I knew I needed to get away from my usual environment and influences so as to think clearly about where I was headed. Once settled into my room on the little island of Aruba, I began my process of self-change. I really could have been anywhere as long as nobody could reach me by phone and I had the peace and quiet to think about what I wanted to do. I spent the mornings going for long walks on the beach, the afternoons sitting under my favorite tree, reading books and listening to tapes. Probably most important of all, I forced myself to get out of my room and go to meet people. Ordinarily shy, I now decided that I was someone who was perfectly capable of having a conversation with anyone I chose. Since nobody knew the "real" me, the way I had always been, I felt free to be completely different. It took me almost a year to pay off that trip, but I am convinced that my single week in Aruba was worth three years in therapy. That trip started a number of processes that helped me to transform myself. This is how I did it: I created a mindset that made me ready for change. I expected that big things were

Unit 9 Music In-Class Reading Music to Your Gear

大学生笔译比赛测试题 (测试时间为2小时) 姓名:分数: 一、汉译英(共50分) A Bite of China, a mouth-watering late-night documentary television series featuring delicious Chinese food, has attracted countless viewers, and moved many to tears. Given its subject matter and time slot, A Bite of China was initially considered a "weak player" on TV. Surprisingly, the documentary became popular immediately after airing, and has made viewers go beyond thinking about delicacies. "Man is what he eats," said Ludwig Feuerbach. From its very beginning, A Bite of China is not just a documentary about food. "The scenes of digging for bamboo shoots, hanging hams, catching fish using a net, opening a steamer filled with white steamed buns, and pulling wheat dough into thin strands for noodles move us to tears. What a lovely China!" a viewer said. A Bite of China is a serious documentary providing a unique view of Chinese as well as the relations between people and food and between people and society from the perspective of food. The touching documentary reminds some people of their mother, and makes some realize that every grain comes from hard and laborious toil. Some people see patriotism in the documentary, and some consider it a great cultural export. How did this documentary achieve a tremendous influence beyond its subject matter in such a short time? "
