Thanks to medical and drug research, there are thousands of drugs that help people. Medicines can cure (治愈), slow, or prevent disease, helping us to lead healthier and happier lives. But there are also lots of illegal, harmful drugs that people take to help them feel good for a moment.

Drugs are chemicals that change the way our bodies work. When you put them into your body, drugs find their way into your bloodstream and are transported to parts of your body, such as your brain. In the brain, drugs may affect your senses, and sometimes reduce physical pain. The effects of drugs can be different depending upon

the kind of drug taken, how much it is taken, how often it is used, how quickly it gets to the brain, and what other drugs and food are taken at the same time.

Although people can feel good when they take illegal drugs at first, in the end the drugs can do a lot of harm to the body and brain. Many people take drugs just for the pleasure they believe they can bring, or because someone tried to convince(说服) them that drugs would make them feel good. Some teens believe drugs will help them think better, be more popular, stay more active, or become better athletes. Others are simply curious (好奇的)and think one try won’t hurt. A few use drugs to gain attention from th eir parents. Some teens use drugs because they’re depressed or think drugs will help them escape their problems. The tr uth is, drugs don’t solve problems — they simply hide feelings and problems. When the effect of a drug wears off, the feelings and problems remain, or become worse. Drugs can destroy a person’s life.

21. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first two paragraphs?

A. Some drugs are helpful to humans.

B. All drugs are harmful to people.

C. Drugs can reach your blood rather than the brain.

D. The same drug has the same effect on all people.

22. The underlined word “depressed”in the last paragraph probably means _____.

A. excited

B. surprised

C. satisfied

D. unhappy

23. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?

A. How drugs work in people’s bodies.

B. How many teens take drugs in the world.

C. The reasons why people take drugs.

D. The bad effects of taking drugs.

Smokers may have started smoking because their friends did so or because it

seemed cool. But they keep on smoking because they became addicted to nicotine, one of the chemicals in cigarettes. Many people don’t quit smoking because they think it’s too hard. It’s true, for most people quitting isn’t easy. After all, the nicotine in cigarettes is a powerfully addictive drug. But with the following approaches, you can overcome (战胜) it.

Put it in writing. People who want to make a change are often more successful when they put it in writing. So write down all the reasons why you want to quit smoking, such as the money you will save or the strength you’ll gain for playing sports. Keep that list where you can see it, and add to it when you think of new reasons.

Get support. People whose friends and family help them quit are much more likely to succeed. And if you’re having a hard time finding people to support you, you might consider joining a support group, either in person or online.

Throw away your cigarettes. People can’t stop smoking with cigarettes still around them. Even throw away the cigarettes you have stashed in the secret pocket of your backpack. Get rid of your ashtrays (烟灰缸) and lighters (打火机), too.

Wash all your clothes. Get rid of the smell of cigarettes as much as you can by washing all your clothes and having your coats or sweaters dry-cleaned. If you smoked in your car, clean that out, too.

Reward yourself. As you already know, quitting smoking isn't easy. Give yourself a well-deserved (当之无愧的) reward! Set aside the money you usually spend on cigarettes. When you've stayed away from tobacco for a week, 2 weeks, or a month, buy yourself a treat like a new CD, a book, or some clothes. And every smoke-free year, celebrate again. You earned it.

24. According to the text, some people begin to smoke probably because _____.

A. their friends force them to

B. their family support them

C. their life is hard

D. they think it is cool

25. The underlined word “stashed” in paragraph 4 means _____.

A. hidden

B. shown

C. played

D. told

26. When you want to give up smoking, you can do all the following EXCEPT _____.

A. list as many reasons for quitting smoking as you can

B. believe you can succeed all by yourself

C. get rid of the smell of cigarettes on your clothes

D. reward yourself when you succeed a little

27. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. How to keep healthy

B. How to give up smoking

C. Smoking is harmful to us

D. It’s hard to quit smoking

For many years, artists have flocked to Paris, France, to paint or to learn to paint. Perhaps artists first went there because of the city′s beauty. They went to paint

pictures of the broad, tree-lined streets, the great churches, and the graceful river bridges.

And the people of Paris had always welcomed new ideas. In this city, artists felt free to experiment with new ways of painting.

As soon as famous artists painted in Paris, students came to learn from them. People came to buy paintings. People called art dealers set up galleries where paintings were bought and sold. Others kept shops that sold artists′paints and supplies.

Students and artists who were not yet famous could live in Paris for very little money. They learned by studying great art in the museums, and they learned from one another. They held art fairs, hanging their paintings outdoors along the streets.

Today, New York City and Florence, Italy, are also famous art centers. But the world’s main art exhibits are still held in Paris. Important judges of art live there. Why do so many people enjoy smoking? Some think that it is a pleasure, some believe that it can refresh themselves. In fact, smoking is a bad habit. It does great harm to our health, not only

to the smoker himself, but also to others. For smokers, it is a great waste of money, and causes all kinds of diseases. Besides, many fires are caused by careless smokers.

Today, more and more people are beginning to realize the harm of smoking and decide to give it up. If you are not a smoker, don’t start.
