范文1

It's always wiser to cope with prank in calm than to lose one’s temper, and that is what I learned through my personal experience.

One day, when I walked into the classroom, I saw on the blackboard an old, fat, pig-faced boyish girl wearing a pony tail with my name beside it. Undeniably, I was furious at this picture, but instead of losing my temper and scolding the person who played the trick on me, I chose to laugh it off.

Although I knew exploding with anger might express my feelings immediately, it wouldn’t help me identify the teaser. What was worse, this might content him and lead to another practical joke. In contrast, laughing it off could convey my indifference. At least, I didn't cater to his pleasure of making fun of other students. If I threw my rage aimlessly, this would end up with not only pain but pointless argument. By comparison, telling that it hurt people for lack of respect to play such silly tricks might contribute to my classmates’ deep reflection on this incident.

I was very happy that I kept the situation under control. In fact, I got an apology from the joke maker for his rude behavior. Imagine what would it be like if I had indulged myself into anger and despair? I firmly believe the naughty student won’t do this ever again and I am pleased with the way I handled the prank. If asked to choose from losing my temper and laughing it off next encounter, I would always go for the latter. (261 words)(9+9+4)

范文2

Stepping into the classroom one day, I saw awkward faces staring at me with a string of sympathy and somehow gloat. Confused and curious as I was, until I saw a hideous cartoon of me emerged on the blackboard. Embarrassment and indignity flooded over me instantly, although no discomfort could be perceived from my facial expression.

Leaving it ignored was my decision instead of intervention with furry, because in terms of interpersonal relationship between peers, the former reaction could probably construct an accessible social identity of a student, hence a larger contact circle. In contrast, furious response to this deliberate humiliation was highly likely to undermine the personal image due to the tendency of violence.

From the perspective of community, paying no attention to the insult could create an inclusive society on campus. On the contrary, any negative reaction in response to it might result in further increasing teasing because the attempt of disgrace would have been fulfilled eventually.

Section A

Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and a question about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.

1. W: What do you think of my new dress? I bought it yesterday just for 20 dollars.

M: Wow, that was really a bargain. It fits you well, especially the color. But to be honest, your shoes don’t really go with it.

Q: What does the man think of the woman’s new dress?

2. M: What have you done with my study, Alice? I can’t find anything.

W: I really couldn’t stand the mess in that room any more, so I cleaned it this morning. Doesn’t it look more organized and beautiful, honey?

Q: What did the woman think of the man’s study?

3. W: John, I’m glad I ran into you. I’ve been trying to call you but you’re never home. Where

have you been hiding lately?

M: Actually I’ve been very busy recently. I’m getting ready to go to the United States, and I have a million things to do.

Q: Why couldn’t the woman get the man on the phone?

4. M: Okay, Jane, you see, I need to talk to your dad. Could you take a message for me and give it

to him as soon as he gets back? It’s very urgent.

W: Yeah. May I ask who is calling, please?

Q: Where are the two speakers talking?

5. W: I think our basketball team’s got a good chance of winning the championship this year.

M: What? Are you kidding? Have you seen them play recently?

Q: What does the man imply?

6. M: How many rooms do you want in a house?

W: Well, to begin with, one bedroom for each of the children and one for us. And I want a bathroom, a big kitchen and a living room with lots of sunlight in it. Yes, altogether seven rooms.

Q: How many children do they have?

7. W: Tomorrow is the deadline to hand in the term paper. Are you sure you’ve corrected all the

typing errors in this paper?

M: Perhaps I’d better read it through again.

Q: What is the man most probably going to do?

8. M: I have been running the sports ground every morning for nearly a month. But the scale

shows no hint of losing weight. I wonder if it is worth it.

W: You see, usually it seems very hard when you are starting out. It may work one month later. Q: What does the woman mean?

9. W: Prof. Kennedy has been very busy this semester. As far as I know, he works until midnight

every day.

M: I wouldn’t have troubled him so much if I had known he was so busy.

Q: What do we learn about the man from the conversation?

10. W: Sorry, sir. The flight is somewhat behind schedule.

M: Thank you. You will tell us as soon as you know something definite, won’t you?

Q: What can we learn from the conversation?

Section B

Directions: In Section B, you will hear two passages and one longer conversation. After each passage or conversation, you will be asked several questions. The passages and conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

Levi Miller’s life changed during an ordinary dinner with his family. That evening, director Joe Wright called to offer the 11-year-old the starring role in Wright’s upcoming movie Pan.

The phone call led Levi to leave his home in Australia to film in London, England. His mother quit her job to accompany him.

Levi began performing when he was 2 or 3. He joined in some of his older sister’s dance shows. He wanted to share the applause she was getting. When he was 5 or 6, he won a drama competition as Peter Pan.

But Levi still had a lot to learn on the set of his first movie. First, he had to change his accent to sound like he was from London. He learned about life in London during World War II, which is when the movie takes place. He also needed to figure out how to cry on cue. His trick was to think about his dog, who had died not long before.

At first, Levi felt very awkward around the famous actors he worked with. Since that first experience, Levi has continued acting on screen.

Sometimes child stars end up making bad decisions as they grow up. But Levi is determined that he won’t do the same. He wants to do the right thing and to help his mother. And he has hobbies besides acting: playing guitar, rock climbing and hanging out with friends.

But Levi also loves the possibilities that acting provides. He says, “Every time you go on a set,

it’s a whole different world, and I love that.”

(Now listen again, please.)

11. How old was Levi when director Joe Wright offered him the starring role?

12. What was the number one thing that he had to learn on the set of his first movie?

13. What does Levi love besides his hobbies?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

You and I can usually distinguish one face from another easily, but can computers accurately do the same? Previously, many thought it wasn’t possible, but advances in facial recognition software have proven differently.

Some facial recognition systems use a digital image and measure various points on the face. Measurements include the distance between the eyes, the width of the nose, the length of the jaw line and more. A detailed map, or faceprint, of the face is developed, stored and later used as a basis for comparison and matching.

Some government agencies, airports and banks use facial recognition technology for security purpose. Apple and Facebook use it to provide their users with added convenience. Other companies use it to assist them in better recognizing their customers’ needs. For example, some stores are checking into the use of the technology to spot return customers. Then they can offer special deals, based on the customers’ buying patterns.

While some systems are used with the knowledge of the individual, others aren’t, and that raises concerns. For many, though, convenience outweighs the concerns, meaning that facial recognition technology is likely here to stay.

(Now listen again, please.)

14. What is mainly used as a basis for comparison and matching?

15. For what purpose do companies use facial recognition technology?

16. What might be the future of facial recognition technology according to the passage?

Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

M: Hey, look at how many people liked and commented on my funny post about Bill.

W: That post isn’t funny! It’s just bad.

M: Of course it’s funny! If it weren’t funny, why would so many people have liked it?

W: A lot of students enjoy bullying Bill, so of course they go along when you do it.

M: My post doesn’t bully Bill! It’s just a harmless little joke.

W: Bill didn’t seem to think it was harmless. Did you see how upset he was when he checked his phone after class?

M: Bill is just too sensitive. He needs to learn how to take a joke. Well, the things I say aren’t bad compared to what other kids do. Did you see Sam push Bill halfway down the stairs this morning?

W: Yeah, that was bad, but that doesn’t excuse the bad things you say. Continual joking can feel

even worse than a single bad action.

M: Look. This is just the way kids at our school treat each other. Do you remember the way Sam made fun of me last year? I learned to live with it, and so can Bill.

W: Yes, but I’m sure you still remember how much that whole thing hurt. Why would you want to make someone else go through the same thing?

M: Do you really think my post hurt Bill that much?

W: Maybe not by itself, but the constant bullying is certainly hurting him. This sort of thing can affect people’s grades and their emotional health.

M: I’m still not totally convinced that what I posted about Bill was that bad. But maybe I won’t post anything else about him this week.

(Now listen again, please.)

17. What attitude do the two speakers and their classmates take towards the post about Bill?

18. How does Bill feel about the post by the man speaker?

19. How did the man speaker respond to the way Sam made fun of him last year?

20. Which of the following statements can be concluded from the conversation?

That’s the end of the Listening Comprehension.
