第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题满分30分)

A

What do you see from a handful of seeds? Some see green plants, some see blooming flowers, or just seeds. But one group of Shanghai students saw an opportunity to make money.

Eight students from No 2 Secondary School Attached to East China Normal University started a virtual company selling different seeds and seed products. They successfully sold 28 pictures pasted with different seeds at a campus auction a week ago. The company, which has recruited around 20 student staff members, has earned over 2000 yuan in the past three months.

"We donated part of the money to a poor school in the countryside of Anhui Province. It's great to realize our ideal of ‘spreading love and culture with seeds’ after many tests and lots of hard work," said Senior 2 Shi Chen, CEO of the company.

Just like any other company, Shi's didn't develop smoothly. Shi and her young colleagues used to sell fresh flowers and old books, and later found seeds might be something that their company could engage in. They bought seeds of various plants and flowers at low prices from a local farm and sold them in schools or on streets. The creative students also made accessories and pictures with different seeds.

With little business knowledge, the students had to learn new skills as the leaders of different departments, such as public relations (PR), sales and marketing. They persuaded a joint Sino-French company near their school to give them training in business management. They also asked some local businessmen to act as their consultants.

"They helped us overcome our shyness. We also learned quite a lot of business theory. I found communication skills and teamwork are very important for my job," said Senior 1 Qian Yifei.

The 16-year-old was elected as PR manager thanks to her talent for speaking. She is also in charge of after sales service, dealing with complaints and providing suggestions.

As the head of the company, CEO Shi has a lot more to think about. First of all, she has to learn how to make her colleagues work efficiently as the company only opens at weekends due to all their studies. So she established a system to evaluate every one's performance, in terms of punctuality, efficiency, profits knowledge and so on.

"It makes the company more formal," she said.

21. What is the purpose of opening the company?

A. To earn money for their education fees.

B. To spread love and culture with seeds.

C. To see whether they can open a company.

D. To collect money to open a Hope School.

22. What does the word "it" (in the last paragraph) refer to?

A. Selling seeds.

B. To have a person as CEO.

C. Every colleague's performance.

D. To make her colleagues work efficiently.

23. According to Qian Yifei, what matters most in dealing with public relations?

A. Communication skills and teamwork.

B. Creative and critical thinking.

C. Educational background.

D. Business theories.

24. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The company is owned by 8 students.

B. The company is over-night successful.

C. The company gets a lot of help from others.

D. The company sells old books and fresh flowers.

Frankly,I appreciate myself very much. Yes,I admit I’m in many aspects not as good as other people, but I don’t think I’m always not good. When I find what I’ve done or written is okay,I’ll remain pleased with myself for quite a few days, and if I receive praise for it,I’ll even become so excited as to add a few words to reward myself.

True,I’m not modest at all.People may call me conceited (自负的).But I think otherwise.

I appreciate other people. I appreciate anything good. Isn’t it unfair to forget appreciating myself while appreciating others?

We Chinese generally tend to be modest, and we take pride in being so. For example,a Chinese man will call his own wife zhuojing, meaning “my humble wife”,and his own writings zhuozuo, meaning “my poor writings”.But if you call his wife a “rustic (乡村的) woman” or his writings“trash”,he would,I’m sure, declare he would make a clean break with you angrily. As a matter of fact, there is probably no difference at all between what is said by him and you.

I don’t think it’s wrong of you to freely praise yourself if you’re really worthy of praise. As we know, there is an old Chinese saying disparaging (蔑视) a melon seller, named Lao Wang, who keeps praising his own goods. Well, why can’t he praise his melons if they are really sweet and juicy?

Lao Wang sells melons for a living. How could he carry on business if he,by imitating the affectations (装模作样) of us intellectuals, were to show false modesty about his melons? He would sure enough die of starvation.

Self- appreciation is therefore a key to professional dedication and enjoyment of work. Needless to say,the same is true of those who make a living with their pen. One will lose confidence in writing when he stops admiring his own essays.

25.We know from the first three paragraphs that the author________.

A.is modest in some way B.is pleased to be a good writer

C.is too conceited D.thinks it unfair to appreciate others

26.What do we know about the author’s attitude towards Chinese modesty according to Paragraph 4?

A.Supportive. B.Negative C.Neutral. D.Careless.

27.The author mentions the example of Lao Wang to prove that______.

A.Lao Wang is very proud of himself B.melon sellers should praise their goods C.reasonable self- appreciation is good D.writers should learn from Lao Wang 28.The purpose of the passage is to encourage readers to be________.

A.modest B.considerate C.respectful D.confident

C

About 97% of the world’s water is salty and is found in our oceans and seas. But, as we

can’t drink seawater, how can it be important?

Every part of our seas and oceans contains an amazing number of animals and fish that live at different ocean depths. Most of the different species of animals and fish depend on simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae (海藻) drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produce over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important seawater is!

Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain. The algae are eaten in large amounts by microscopic animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately balanced.

The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man. People once thought that the oceans w ere so big that it didn’t matter if we dumped rubbish into them or caught huge quantities of fish and whales for food. But we now know this is not true and fish stocks in the oceans have started to drop.

Thankfully, the world is taking steps to protect the future of our oceans by introducing international agreements to protect marine habitats. Most countries have introduced fishing restrictions to protect fish stocks in the oceans and new techniques are being pioneered to cope with pollution. Finally, the importance of protecting oceans is being made known to more people. This is just the beginning of a long process to protect the oceans for our future. We depend on the oceans for fish which are an important part of the human diet. How important seawater is!

29. Which of the following is the proper order of the food chain?

A. small animals→algae→microscopic animals→large animals→man

B. algae→microscopic animals→large animals→larger animals→man

C. small animals→algae→large animals→microscopic animals→man

D. microscopic animals→algae→large animals →larger animals→man

30. People used to think that the rubbish thrown into the sea ________.

A. wouldn’t harm the fish in the sea

B. would change the balance of the food chain

C. would be broken down in the s ea

D. wouldn’t do much harm to the sea

31. From the passage, we learn that _________.

A. most fish and sea animals live at the surface of the seas

B. it is very difficult to break the balance of a food chain

C. excessive fishing has caused the decrease in fish stock

D. it won’t be long before the problems concerning oceans will be solved

32. What would be the best title of the passage?

A. The importance of seawater.

B. Life in the oceans.

C. How to protect food chains.

D. How to deal with seawater pollution.

D

Scientists said on Thursday they have for the first time detected gravitational (引力的) waves, ripples (涟波) in space and time hypothesized (假设) by physicist Albert Einstein a century ago, in a landmark discovery that opens a new window for studying the cosmos.

Discovering gravitational waves would be a huge deal for physics, cosmology, and our understanding of the universe at large. But if you’re not a scientist studying one of the mentioned fields, it’s possible you’ve never h eard of these mysterious ripples. So what are gravitational waves and why is the discovery so significant?

Gravitational waves are disturbances in space-time, the very fabric of the universe, that travel at the speed of light. The waves are sent out by any mass that is changing speed or

direction. The simplest example is a binary (二元的) system, where a pair of stars or compact objects (like black holes) orbit their common center of mass.

We can think of gravitational effects as curvatures (曲率) in space-time. Earth’s gravity is constant and produces a static curve in space-time. A gravitational wave is a curvature that moves through space-time much like a water wave moves across the surface of a lake. It is generated only when masses are speeding up, slowing down or changing direction.

The new discovery was made by a group of more than 1,000 scientists from universities around the United States as well as in 14 other countries. Director David Reitze announced on Thursday at a press conference that they detected gravitational waves.

While opening a door to new ways to observe the universe, scientists said gravitational waves should help them gain knowledge about mysterious objects like black holes and neutron stars. The waves also may provide insight into the mysterious nature of the very early universe.

The scientists said that because gravitational waves are so radically (彻底地) different from electromagnetic waves they expect them to reveal big surprises about the universe.

33. Discovering gravitational waves would be a huge deal for _______.

A. medicine.

B. literature.

C. cosmology.

D. philosophy.

34. The author explains the term of gravitational waves _______.

A. by classifying

B. by giving cause and effect

C. by making a comparison

D. by presenting a definition

35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. Scientists can get further information about the universe by studying gravitational waves.

B. Scientists expect gravitational waves to reveal big surprises about the universe.

C. Gravitational waves are so radically different from electromagnetic waves.

D. Scientists from all the world work together to study the mystery of the solar system.

Think for a moment about the teachers you've had at junior or senior high school. Which one did you like best? And why? Were the teachers you liked best also the ones who were the best teachers, in your opinion? 36 And then begin to read further.

Some very common answers to this question are that teachers need to love their students, that they need to have expert knowledge of their subjects and that they should devote themselves completely to their work. All of these ideas are, of course, true to a certain extent. 37

It's impossible for anyone to love everyone he knows, and teachers deal with a very large number of students over the years. On the other hand, teachers should certainly be able to make their students feel that they're interested in them as people. 38 A deep knowledge of the subject is especially important. 39 That's to say, a teacher needs to be trained in the skills of teaching. These skills include how to control a class. Finally, teachers have to devote a lot of time and energy to their work, of course. However, because they're also models that their students must follow, it's important that they should be well-balanced people with interests outside their school work-families, friends, hobbies, etc. 40

A. They're perhaps a little too simple.

B. Students ask too much from teachers.

C. Well-qualified teachers should be educated and capable.

D. Consider for a minute the qualities that make a teacher outstanding.

E. A teacher who only lives for work is likely to become narrow-minded.

F. Equally important is the ability to pass that knowledge on to the students effectively.

G. They also pay attention to the development of both their brains and their characters.

Nowadays, there are a lot of films and TV plays that are adapted to popular novels or classical work. Some people think better to read the original, while others are against it.

I think reading the original is too much better than watching its film or TV version because I can experience more after reading the original. Just as a famous saying go, there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eye. Different people have different feelings about the book or a certain role. But in the film or TV version, though we can get a main idea more direct, we may miss some wonderful, even important plots. And we are easily misled by the actors or actresses, so they act according to their understand of the book.

In a word, I think reading the original is much better than watching its film or TV version.

Recently_our_class_had_a_heated_discussion_about_the_Winter_Morning_Jogging_ Activity_in_our_school. Opinions are divided on this topic.

Most students are in favor of this activity. They believe that the activity in winter can not only help improve physical health but develop a strong will. Besides,it's a good way to relieve stress. On the other hand,a minority of the students are opposed to it. They think the activity is too dull. In addition, there is so much heavy study and it's so cold outside that they would rather stay in the classroom to study.

As far as I'm concerned,I support the activity because it benefits us greatly. The modern society requires many qualities of us,so bookworms can't keep up with the times any longer.

A Well, parents, surprise! Lots of us are using Twitter and Facebook to find rides, and not just to school. It’s awkward to call a friend and ask for a ride, and half the time they’ll say, “Sorry, my car is full.” But with Twitter, you just tweet #Ashleys Pool Party and look for other people heading the same way. It may sound risky, but many teens stay within their own social circles to find rides, and don’t branch out beyond friends when asking on Twitter. For me, I only rideshare with people I know, but to some young people, especially those taking longer trips, stranger danger is less of a concern. The sharing economy got big during the recession(经济衰退). It allows people to access more goods and services using technology, while also allowing them to share cost. And that technology, for me, is what the car was for my mom, a gateway to more freedom. According to the researchers at the University of Michigan, 30 years ago, eight in ten American 18-year-olds had a driver’s license. Today it’s six in ten. So it’s not that surprising that on my 16th birthday I wasn’t rushing to get a license. All I wanted was an iPhone. Juliet Schor (Sociology professor at Boston College) knows people of my age love being connected and for young people driving means they have to disconnect from their technology, and that’s a negative. So if they could sit in the passenger side and still be connected, that’s going to be a plus. To me, another plus is ridesharing represents something more than trying to save money. I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other. My generation shares their cars and apartments the way neighbors used to share cups of sugar. For the system to work, some of us still need our own cars. But until I get my own version of the silver Super Beetle, you can find me on Twitter. 21 The writer usually rideshares with _____. A. anyone heading the same way B. people he knows

2017-2018学年高二年级周练二英语试卷

江西省安义中学2017-2018学年度上学期高二英语第二次周练试卷 第一节阅读理解 Life is not easy in senior high school. You’ve got the pressure of studies and exams. From time to time, you may feel depressed and frustrated. When depression strikes, you have to take measures to fight it. One of the strangest ways to fight depression is to eat salt, scientists have found. Salt acts as a natural anti—depressant (抗抑郁剂), researchers say. While too much can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease, not enough can cause “psychological(心理的) d epressions”, a study has reported. The study, by researchers at the University of Iowa in the US, discovered that when rats are deficient in salt, they don’t do activities they normally enjoy. The recommended daily salt intake for an adult is four grams, although experts say the body needs only half as much. However, most adults in the developed world consume(消耗)around ten grams a day, mainly because their diets contain high salt amounts. Today, 77 percent of US salt intake comes from processed and restaurant foods, like frozen dinners and fast food. The minerals in salt are required by the body—in small quantities—to help move liquid in and out of cells. But too much can cause diseases, for example high blood pressure. Today scientists are finding that salt is an addictive substance—almost like a drug. One s ign of addiction is using a substance even when it’s known to be harmful. Many people are told to eat less salt due to health concerns, but they have trouble doing so because they like the taste and find low-salt foods tasteless. Humans have a long histor y of eating salt. In the Stone Age, people didn’t need to find salt, because they hunted most of their food, and ate a lot of red meat, which has plenty of salt in it. But when people began to farm, about 10,000 BC, they started to eat mainly grains like rice and wheat, and very little meat. Then they had to find another way to get salt. 1. What does the underlined word "deficient" in the third paragraph mean? A. enough B. far from enough C. more than enough D. plenty 2. The major role of salt is to ____________. A. help the body work well B. help fight against depression C. help people get rid of an addiction to drugs D. help people enjoy sugary substances 3. Which of the following statements is true? A. People have trouble reducing salt because they don't know it is harmful to eat too much of it. B. Before 10,000 BC, human beings did not need salt. C. The richer the country is, the more salt is eaten there. D. Taking more than 4 grams of salt a day can be harmful for an adult's health. 4. What kind of food should people eat more of? A. Frozen food B. Fast food C. Red meat D Low--salt food 第二节:七选五 Everyone knows that the Frenchmen are romantic, the Italians are fashionable and the Germans are serious. Are these just stereotypes(刻板印象) or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeed or fail? At least one group of people is certain that it can. A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (企业家) in the UK found that 70% felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public. Britain is hostile (敌意的) to success, they said. It has a culture of jealousy(嫉妒).__5__ Jealousy is sometimes known as the “green-eyed monster” and the UK is its home. Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people together and gave each an imaginary amount of money.__6__ Those given a little were given the chance to destroy the large amount of money given to others— but at the cost of losing their own. Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this. __7__. But there is also opposite evidence. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently reported that the UK is now the world's fourth largest economy. That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success. People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either. “It is not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper, a professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. “It’s people using their success in a way that seems proud or unfair or which separates them from their roots.” _8__ They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours. By their own efforts they become millionaires.__9__ It hardly seems worth following their example. If they were more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them. A. This seems to prove that the entrepreneurs were right to complain. B. The one who owns most money in the end is the winner.
