英文读书报告(BOOK REPORT)的格式

1. Introductory Paragraph

The first sentence should state for which instructor and class the book-report is being written.

The second sentence should state the title of the book and the author's name.

The third sentence should tell how many pages the book has and the name of the publisher.

The fourth sentence can state basic bibliographic information about the book.

Bibliographic information means not only the author and title but also what company published the book, what year it was published in and any other relevant information such as the edition and if the book has been translated, simplified or abridged. (see

copyright page and the back of the title page.) The next sentence should state the reason(s) you decided to read this book. Why did you choose this particular book? Typical reasons might be:

o You like the author.

o You like this type of book ( mystery, western, adventure or romance, etc.). o Someone recommended the book to you.

o It was on a required reading list.

o You liked the cover.

These reasons do not have to be complex. Most people choose the books they read because they like the author or somebody recommended it to them. If you chose the book because you like the author, then state why you like that author.

An optional sentence can be used if the cover (back cover) of the book gives you any additional information then add a sentence with that information.

o Was the book a best seller?

o Are there X million copies in print?

o Did it win any major awards?

2. Main Character(s) Paragraph

The first sentence of this paragraph should state who the main character or characters of the book are, and why they are important. Refer to this person or these persons as the Main Character or Main Characters.

You will need at least a complex sentence for this, and probably more than one sentence.

3. Other Characters Paragraph

You should compose at least one sentence for each of the other prominent or important characters in the book. State the name of each of the other important characters, and the key role that each one plays in the book

Most books have five or six prominent characters besides the main character, so simply listing each one and stating their role in the book will give you a good sized paragraph.

4. Plot Summary Paragraph

This is perhaps the hardest paragraph to write in five sentences or so. If you have to write a bit more don't worry. Here are the main points to cover: o State the type of book (Mystery, Western, etc.).

o What place or country was the book set in?

o What time period was the book set in? (19th century, the present, ancient Rome, the 23rd century).

o Other physical locations which are important, like: ships, airplanes, houses, or buildings.

o Other notable attributes of the book. (Was it violent, scary, fast paced, etc.). o What is the main character trying to do?

o What is the outcome of the book?

o etc.

Make sure you cover all of the major parts of the plot. You might have to go back through the book, chapter by chapter, and make a few notes.

5. Personal Impressions and Conclusion Paragraph

Simply talk about what you liked or did not like about the book. Use this paragraph as your conclusion. It should summarize your overall impressions of the book and bring the report to a close.

o Start with a sentence that states that you are now writing a conclusion. (For example: "My final thoughts on 'A Fine Balance' are that it is a fascinating book but I am not entirely sure if I completely understood the thematic message of the book."

o Restate your reasons why you liked and/or disliked the book using different words.

o Write two sentences that talk about the books good points and weak points. o Write a sentence or two about what you learned from the book.

o Close with a sentence that states whether you would recommend the book to others.

Don't be afraid to give your own honest impressions of the book. After all, if you've read the book thoroughly, you are entitled to your own interpretation

of it.

Typically, your book report should not exceed two double-spaced pages, and it should be somewhere between 600 and 800 words in length.

Catcher in the rye wrote a 16 years old boy,called Holden ,who was born in a rich middle class family .He escaped from school after being expelled in the fourth time .Then he went to the United States of New York city in one day and two whole story tells ahout his such a special experience. It not only vividly depicted a delicate restlessness of the middle class children’s depressed, lonely and cynical spirit world,and the psychological characteristics of adolescents’ a mass of contradictions, but also criticized the the hypocrisy in the adult society.

The beginning of the story from Pencey school.

Pencey middle school is very famous and has a great popularity in people's minds, however, the hero describes the pencey middle school follow as " Pencey is just as other schools,it can’t cultivate talents at all. And I don’t see any outstanding , intelligent and excellent students." Besides, he also said there are a plenty of thieves in pencey middle school. In holden's opinion, the most unforgivable thing in that school is fuilled with hypocritical people, especially the is very he sees ordinary parents,he just say hello to see the rich and powerful who drive a good car, he will talk with them enthusiasmly in a long time. Besides the disgusted Acle and Mr Rudd tower. The reason that Holden leaves pencey is not for he failed six subjects, but there are a lot hypocrite

There is no happiness in Holden's if he can feel happy, it is only a few people to give him. His reject good things, although it is a real concern. When his

history teacher Spencer tells him that his parents are the best felt very disgusted, he heartily hates the word "better". While it's hard for me to imagine, as a child,why he could think so ugly about the world? Though there are many ugly things in this world, too. He even thinks some tiny little things very hateful. When he sees a boy who is just like a guy in the street and get together with his girlfriend. He even boring to hate Christians. In Holden's eyes, all sorts of things is just a fake death of farce.

When Holden sees the ugly side of life, he tells his loneliness without any reservation. This kind of loneliness is not a simple sadness in the sense of solitude, but it is not a person can really understand him. Although he hates Mr Rudd tower, he would also like to dance in front of him. On the other hand, his spiritual world is innocent, he hates all phony things while seeks sincerity and love and he himself is a person full of love. He loves children, because children from falling into the cliff referring to the adult world which he associates with hypocrisy and ugliness. He doesn’t want children to

step into the adult world; he wants them to stay innocent forever. That is why when he sees the word “fuck you” on the wall of Phoebe’s school he is so angry that he even wants to kill the guy who wrote it. His degeneration is in essence a kind of resistance, because he doesn’t want to wallow in mire with those guys he despises. “Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody'saround--nobody big, I mean--except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff--I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be.”This paragraph is the most famous part from the to some extent,it reflects why the book is named by Catcher in the rye.

Holden was those of a very troubled person who deserved our sympathy more often than our praise. A

close look at what Holden did, nonetheless, revealed that he possessed very strong moral, compassionate instincts. The Catcher in the Rye left many useful points to us for cogitation. Having seen the

liberty, equality, wealth and happiness of his people deprived by the colonials, he encouraged his fellow Americans to fight against tyranny and protect their rights. He took up his favorite weapon, the pen, to explain carefully and coolly why America should not be directly taxed by the British Parliament. Gradually, Franklin became the one of the strongest voices for the interest of the colonies. Thanks to his courage and leadership, the colonies were eventually brought together, and a new nation started to emerge. Franklin accepted every duty thrust upon him as a faithful statesman. In 1776, the 71 year-old Franklin helped write the Declaration of Independence. The same year, he sailed to France to secure

Book reports can help learners improve their reading comprehension and enhance their ability to analyze the story and the characters. Generally speaking, a book report is usually composed of three major parts. They are:

information about the writer (his name, the books he has published, the years of his birth and death, the publisher of the book)

a summary of the book (the story and main characters)

some comments on the book (personal interpretation of the meaning of the book)

When giving the information about the writer, the learner writer should include some historical and social background to which the book is related. To make things clear, the learner writer should read some reference materials, such as biographies of the writer and histories of the period in which the book was

written.

A book report should contain a summary of the book under discussion. The summary should be concise, clear and easy to understand. The learner writer should make sure that the summary be subjective and center on the major theme of the book. As for the tense of the book report, it depends on the subject matter of the book. If it is a novel or a play or a science fiction, the present tense is more appropriate while the past tense is required for nonfiction such as history books.

The third part and also the most important part of a book report is the comment. In this part, the learner writer's job is to evaluate the book according to his or her own personal interpretation and discuss the merits (优点) and demerits (缺点) of the book, the social and/or historical significance of the book. If the learner writer is competent enough to discuss the writing style of the author, he or she should feel free to do so.
