5. 世界第70亿人在菲律宾降生!
On 31 October, 2011, a baby was born in a hospital in Manila, the Philippines. It’s a baby girl with 5.5 pounds, and the world’s population reached seven billion. United Nations Population Fund (基金会) staff gave a cake to the family of newborn baby girl named Danica Camacho. The birth came a day ahead of what the United Nations had proclaimed(公布) as The Day of 7 Billion.
The Philippines is the 12th most populous country in the world. Only 50 years ago, the Philippines’ population stood at 27.1 million. Today they are about 95 million. That’s a 250 percent jump. Such a country waits for the baby of Mary Rose Castin, the 21-year-old wife. “I didn’t realize there were so many people,” said Mary Rose when she was told that the world’s population was reaching seven billion.
The world’s population didn’t hit the 1 billion until the 19th century. But only just a hundred years later, we were 2 billion strong. Every day, 382,000 babies are born all over the world. Most of the births are in countries already struggling to feed a growing number of hungry mouths. By 2100, Earth will be welcoming its 10 billionth baby.
In the world of 7 billion, large populations necessarily need more houses. Medical care will also be a serious problem. An increasing population is an environmental problem in many countries. 6.“活取熊胆”引关注!
A company, Guizhentang, has had to face a storm of cr

iticism(批评). The company is in the bear bile business. They have bear farms in which bile is taken out and used in traditional Chinese medicine and for other purposes.
Bile is a liquid that is produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder(胆囊). In bears (and in humans too), bile is necessary to help digest fatty foods. Traditional Chinese medicine uses bear bile to treat pain, fever and vision problems. Bile for traditional Chinese medicine used to be collected by killing bears, but it was discovered that bear bile could be got by keeping the bears alive and just “milking” them by putting a rubber tube into the bodies of bears. Unfortunately, this is a painful process and the bears have to live a life of suffering.
Animal rights groups want this practice to stop. They say it is a cruel way to treat animals. Guizhentang disagrees. They say the practice isn’t harmful and that they are actually helping the bears. There are fewer Chinese black bears, from which the bile is taken, because human activity is taking over the forest the bears live in. The company says bear farms are a way to protect the species. On the one hand, we use many types of animals for food, clothing, medicine and for medical research. On the other hand, we should know that causing animals great pain is wrong.
There are man-made substitutes (替代品) for bear bile that work just as well as the real thing, so bear farms aren’t really necessary. If Guizhentang really wants to protect the black bear, they should perhaps think about getting out of the bear bile business.

7. 2012看“3D”伦敦奥运
The 2012 Olympic Games will take place in London. This summer, Chinese sports fans will be able to watch the exc

iting games in 3-D on CCTV. When you watch 3-D movies or TV, you have to wear a special pair of glasses. The 3-D glasses make the images from the screen look like they are there in the room with you.
Three-dimensional, or 3-D, means having three dimensions (维度): width, height and depth. 3-D technology is based on the way the human brain and eyes work. Because the pupils of a person’s eyes are about 6.5cm apart, when we look at something, each eye sees it from a different angle (角度). Our eyes send the two images to our brain, and the brain puts them together. The small difference between the image from the right eye and the image from the left eye allows us to see depth.
When we view media such as pictures and television in two dimensions, each eye gets the same information. That is because the image has no real depth, and there is only one way of viewing it. So the goal of 3-D technology is to get a different image into each eye of the viewer. It uses two film projectors. One projects a left eye image and the other projects a right eye image. The 3-D glasses allow us to see a different image in each eye.
While watching 3-D films, we feel that we are actually in the same environment as the things we’re watching. However, it also has its disadvantages. The 3-D glasses work by controlling the amount of light that reaches the eyes. It makes the screen look darker. What’s more, people with eye problems may get headaches if they spend too much time watching 3-D movies, because their brains need to work harder to “read” the images.

As space science develops, man has learned more and more about space. Space is not only amazing but also dangerous. While working in space, spacemen are facing danger as well as success.
Scientists have found out that the radiation(辐射)is the greatest danger to spacemen in space. When spacemen are working in space, they are in danger of the radiation from the sun and other stars, which is bad for their health. A small piece of these even knocked a spaceship window and caused some damage(损坏).
Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time. They are working to deal with space rubbish. Although space is really dangerous, it interests many people on the earth. 12. 防火安全教育
We all know the dangers of fires. It’s good and necessary for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. Here are some suggestions.
Put a smoke alarm(火警) in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.
Make escape(逃脱) plans. We should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.
Buy fire extinguishers(灭火器) in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them.
Practise for a fire. We do fire practice because we teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules:
★Don’t open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.
★Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be more dangerous than fire. The best air is near the floor because smoke rises.
★What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop! Don’t run! The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket(毯子) around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.

15. 消除“代沟”

Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days.
Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your par

ents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

It’s also one less plastic toy that needs to be produced, packaged and shipped to the toy store.
Here are some other ways to help save resources for the society:
★Use the other side of the paper.
★Use rechargeable (可再充电的) batteries for your electric toys, MP3 players, cell phones, and cameras.
★ Choose reusable travel cups instead of disposable (一次性的) paper or plastic cups.
★Take your own cloth shopping bags when you go shopping.

19. 房子,房子!
What will the house of the future look like? Could it have gardens on its walls, or a pool with fish for dinner? Architects believe that they are all possibilities. The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.
The tree house
Many architects in the world would like to build a “tree house.” Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even create fresh air for the home. The “root” (根) of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil (土壤) to the home’s temperature.
The Lizard house
Like a lizard (蜥蜴), changing color with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it’s in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy.
Meals at home
This design is perhaps as much about the future of food production as architecture (建筑风格). It has gardens on the outside wall of the hous

e. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them. So every day in the morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.
Learning from the past
Looking to the future isn’t the only way to be green. Sometimes, ancient techniques (古老的技术) can also help cut down energy use. For example, a chimney (烟囱) can be a useful air conditioner because it is easier of hot air to flow out at the chimney.
