A

It was a quarter past nine as Marie hurried into the off ice building where she would be working. Her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided she would start out half an hour earlier the next day. Once inside the building, she had to stand at the lifts and wait several minutes before one arrived. When she finally reached the office marked ―King Enterprises(公司)‖, she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no answer. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no reply. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had had the interview with Mr. King, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking. At the far end of the room, somebody must have just told a good joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any mind to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his work, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. King, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marie realised that the

day’s work in the office began just before Mr. King arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35, so that his staff knew exactly when to start working.

24. What is probably the best title for the passage?

There are hundreds of things that your parents controlled for you when you were a child. And it’s a good thing, too —kids need this kind of protection and assistance, because they aren’t mature enough to take care of themselves and make careful decisions on their own.

But eventually, kids grow up and become teens. It’s totally normal for teen s to create their own opinions, thoughts, and values about life; it’s what prepares them for adulthood. But as you change and grow into this new person who makes his or her own decisions, your parents may have a difficult time adjusting themselves to it.

In most families, it’s this adjustment that can cause a lot of fighting between teens and parents.Teens get angry because they feel parents don’t respect them and aren’t giving them space to do what they like, and parents get angry because they aren’t used t o not being in control or they disagree with the teens’ decisions.

It’s easy for feelings to get very hurt when there are conflicts like these. And more complicated issues can cause even bigger arguments, because your parents will always be intent on protecting you and keeping you safe, no matter how old you are.

The good news about fighting with your parents is that in many families the arguing will lessen as

parents get more comfortable with the idea that their teens have a right to certain opinions. It can take several years for parents and teens to adjust to their new roles, though. In the meantime, concentrate on communicating with your parents as best you can.

Sometimes this can feel impossible —like they just don’t see your point of view and never will. But talking and expressing your opinions can help you gain more respect from your parents, and you may be able to reach a compromise(妥协)that makes everyone happy. Keep in mind, too, that your parents were teens once and that in most cases, they can relate to what you’re going through.25.Why do parents always want to control their children?

A.They are afraid to lose their children.

B.They want to protect their children.

C.They don’t believe the ability of their children.

D.They can’t accept their children are growing.

26.The author suggested that teenagers ________.

A.fight with their parents bravely for their rights

B.obey their parents without any doubt

C.communicate with their parents actively

D.persuade their parents in as many ways as possible

27.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A.most parents will give in while fighting with their children

B.the conflict between parents and teenagers can be solved

C.the only way for teens to get freedom is to leave home

D.only few parents do well in facing the growth of their children

C

A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.

Researchers have di scovered that ―night milk‖ contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.

The study, by researchers from New York, the U.S., involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.

Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of cows’ milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.

Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium(钙) content, which helps people to relax.

Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

28. According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk_______.

A. were less active

B. started sleep more easily

C. woke up later

D. were more anxious

29. Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?

A. It’s used in sleeping drugs.

B. It’s been tested on mice for ten times.

C. It can make people more energetic.

D. It exists in milk in great amount.

30.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Night Milk and Sleep

B. Milk Drinking and Health

C. An Experiment on Mice

D. Fat, Sugar and Health

31. How does the author support the theme of the text?

A. By providing research results.

B. By stating arguments.

C. By explaining statistical(统计的) data.

D. By giving examples.

D

Picture the scene: You come home after work feeling too exhausted to cook –only to find a delicious meal worthy of a Michelin-starred restaurant waiting for you. It sounds like a fantasy, but it could be about to come true thanks to a robot chef developed by British scientists.

Those scientists have come up with a set of robotic arms so smart that they are capable of cooking meals all by themselves. The device will be sold from as early as 2017 as part of a purpose-built high-tech kitchen.

Scientists at Moley Robotics spent almost 18 years developing the hands. According to its creators, t he arms can chop, stir, whisk and baste well enough to recreate almost anything you would care to eat, whether it is a simple home-cooked supper, or a complicated creation designed by a world-class chef. The hands move a little slowly, hovering(盘旋) strangely above the work surface whenever they are not busy, but they imitate human movements closely enough that they can do things such as wiping a spoon on the edge of a pan to prevent drips(溢出).

Mr. Oleynik, who is leading the project, said, “All the things which are possible with the hand are

possible here. There is no limitation. A lot of people want to go to Michelin-starred restaurants, but they are quite expensive and may be quite far from the home. This is an opportunity for people to enjoy very good food, and for a reasonable price. ”

The only cuisine that is off the robot’s menu at the moment is sushi, which requires extremely steady pressure and nimble fingers to make, but the team plan to conquer that as well by the time it goes on sale.

32. People go to Michelin-starred restaurants in order to______.

A. appreciate car tires.

B. escape from work

C. see the new robot chefs

D. enjoy delicious meals

33. What does the underlined word “they”in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. British scientists

B. Household wives

C. Cooks at restaurants

D. The robot chef’s arms

34. Which kind of food C AN’T the robot chef cook at present?

A. Sushi

B. Beef

C. Bread

D. Sandwich

35. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Hands of a robot chef can perform exactly like a cook.

B. It is uncertain when the robot can cook all kinds of food.

C. Michelin-starred restaurants are suitable for many people.

D. Robot chefs are available at shopping malls.
