Thanksgiving Day activities

INTRODUCTION

Thanksgiving is a harvest festival and a holiday celebrated in the North of America on the fourth week of November. It is also a day you give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude.

ACTIVITIE

(1) Families’ Activities

1. Watch the Parade

Families have enjoyed watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV since 1948 (and the parade was first held in 1924). Watching giant balloons, floats, and marching bands roll through the streets of New York City with your kids is a cozy and magical way to start the holiday. Make it even more fun by printing out our Thanksgiving parade bingo game! 2. Do a “Turkey Trot” Run or Walk

Everyone in your family can work up an appetite for your Turkey Day feast by participating in a community walk or run. There's probably a "turkey trot" or two in your area, and the registration funds raised typically benefit a good cause.

3. Play Touch Football

If you have a house full of sports fans, it might be tough to pry their eyes from all the televised football games on Thanksgiving Day. But striking up a family game of touch football (or any of these kid-friendly backyard games) is a much more memorable way to spend the day.

4. Have a Mini Pumpkin Hunt

Another fun group activity that's perfect for toddlers on up is a mini pumpkin hunt. It's one of our favorite pumpkin-themed activities. You can hide one or more mini pumpkins, indoors or outside, and let the family

loose — like an Easter egg hunt with an autumn twist. One other idea is to play "Fill the Cornucopia," asking kids to find all sorts of hidden items — such as apples, Indian corn, and small gourds — to fill a cornucopia or basket on the Thanksgiving table.

5. Research Your Family Tree

What better time is there to help your kids learn their family history than Thanksgiving? With their grandparents and other older relatives around, children can dive into their genealogy and fill in this printable family tree 6. Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen

One admirable way to spend Thanksgiving Day is serving food to less-fortunate families at a soup kitchen, church, or community center. If you can't help on the holiday itself, look into ways your family can pitch

in beforehand, such as collecting and sorting donated food or baking pies from the heart

7. Have a Board Game Tournament

A little friendly competition helps families bond on Thanksgiving — as long as everyone is a good sport! Pick from these 10 classic board games and play multiple rounds —or even a few different games —before crowning this year's family board-game champion.

8. Video-Chat with Faraway Relatives

Online chatting on a tablet or computer allows families to connect from across the country, and even around the world. If you have a loved one or two who are too far away to visit on Thanksgiving, chatting over Skype or another video-chatting service will make their day. (A good ol' phone

call is still nice, too!)

9. Make Crafts and Color

We know the possible scene at your house: Mom is busy cranking out a feast in the kitchen. Dad is watching football. The kids are bored or cranky or running wild with their cousins. Set the youngsters up with some simple craft materials so they can make these festive creations, or — even easier yet — break out the crayons and print out some holiday coloring pages to keep them entertained until turkey time.

10. Help the Hosts

It's never too early to teach kids how to lend a hand to the holiday dinner hosts (even if it's Mom and Dad)! Children can help with everything from

setting and decorating the table to mashing potatoes — and entertaining older guests, too. Everyone will admire how polite your little helpers are!

11. Give Thanks in Your Own Way

This is really what it's all about: Giving thanks for family, friends, the holiday feast, and other good fortune. Relatives and guests can give thanks for something verbally at the dinner table, write and exchange Thanksgiving thank-you cards, or find another unique way to give thanks. Showing gratitude in some way will help children learn about the true spirit of Thanksgiving. Happy Holidays!

(2) Indoor Activities

1-Pin-the-Tail-Feather-On-the-Turkey:

Like Pin-the-Tail-On-the-Donkey, but with a homemade turkey drawing on the wall, and craft paper tail feathers in your hand. Blindfold each “pinner,” and spin them around a couple of times before letting them go. To outsmart those smart people, it’s best to draw your turkey on a

large rectangular piece of paper, so they can’t try to feel for the edges of the turkey to figure out where the tail is.

2- Go Turkey:

Like Go Fish, but instead of placing the cards on the ground, put them in a turkey-shaped bowl for a little bit of fun.

3- Turkey Bingo:

If you have kids, help them create and decorate Turkey-themed bingo boards and have a family-wide bingo game. Make sure to have a special turkey prize for the winner, too—chocolate turkey anyone?

4- Thanksgiving Boat Game:

If you have little kids, this might be a fun one to play that won’t get too competitive. Each child will get a milk carton “boat” and a balloon. Have them insert the balloon into the boat and blow up the balloon. Everyone lets go of the balloon at the same time, and the expelling air propels the boats all around the map. Once they get the hang of it, this game will keep young children entertained for hours.

5- Pick Two:

With a bag of Scrabble tiles, deal out 7 tiles to each player (I find this

works best with one bag per four players). Place the remaining tiles in the middle, face side down. Each player must arrange the tiles, as you would in Scrabble, in a free-form fashion in front of them (no board), so there are essentially four different mini Scrabble games going on. Once a player runs out of extra tiles, they shout out “pick two,” and every player takes two new tiles from the center pile. Throughout the game, you can rearrange your tiles as needed. The person who uses up all the tiles first (with real words that make sense) wins.

(3) Outdoor Activities:

1- Turkey Hunt:

Like hide and go seek, but better. For added fun, make the person hiding dress up as a turkey, or at least wear a turkey headdress.

2- Bowling with Butternuts:

A fun game from Martha Stewart. What child doesn’t love bowling? Make sure you choose a pumpk in “ball” that is small enough for the youngest kids playing the game to pick up.

3- Photo Booth:

This can be both situated indoors or out, depending on what you prefer,

but we suggest outside where your characters can stand near harvest decorations (think cornstalks and hay bales), or near a beautifully colored tree. If you want to set it up inside, create a mural, maybe with the ocean and the Ni?a, Pinta, and Santa Maria in the background, to hang on the wall. Make sure you supply a native-American costume and pilgrim costume that will fit your guests.

(4) Popular Activities

1. Turkey and Trimmings

From the first Thanksgiving to today's turkey burgers, turkeys are an American tradition dating back centuries. According to the National Turkey Federation, 95 percent of Americans eat turkey at Thanksgiving. Regional twists offer variations on the traditional roasted bird, including coffee rubbed turkey from Hawaii, salt encrusted turkey from New England, and deep fried turkey from the South.

2. Time Out for the Pigskin

Throughout the United States, football on Thanksgiving Day is as big a part of the celebration as turkey and pumpkin pie. Dating back to the first intercollegiate football championship held on Thanksgiving Day in 1876, traditional holiday football rivalries have become so popular that a reporter once called Thanksgiving "a holiday granted by the State and the Nation to see a game of football."

3. Parading Around

The first American Thanksgiving Day parade was held in 1920, organized by Gimbel's Department Store in Philadelphia, not Macy's as most people believe. The NYC Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade tradition actually

began in 1924, and has grown into an annual event of balloons, bands, and floats, enjoyed by more than 46 million people each year in person and on TV.

4. Making a Wish

Does your family fight over the wishbone from the Thanksgiving turkey? Known as a "lucky break" the tradition of tugging on either end of a fowl's bone to win the larger piece and its accompanying "wish" dates back to the Etruscans of 322 B.C. The Romans brought the tradition with them when they conquered England and the English colonists carried the tradition on to America.

5. Giving Thanks

Last, but certainly not least, Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for the people and blessings of the past year. From pre-meal prayers to providing holiday meals to the homeless, the holiday is truly a celebration of praise and thanksgiving.

Using Language Reading, listening and writing

4 Unit 1 A STUDENT OF AFRICAN WILDLIFE It is 5:45 am and the sun is just rising over Gombe National Park in East Africa. Following Jane's way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave like humans. Watching a family of chimps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and waits in the shade of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off. Then we follow as they wander into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family. Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. However, the evening makes it all worthwhile. We watch the mother chimp and her babies play in the tree. Then we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night. We realize that the bond between members of a chimp family is as strong as in a human family. Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behaviour. She spent years observing and recording their daily activities. Since her childhood she had wanted to work with animals in their own environment. However, this was not easy. When she first arrived in Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a woman to live in the forest. Only after her mother came to help her for the first few months was she allowed to begin her project. Her work changed the way people think about chimps. For example, one important thing she discovered was that chimps hunt and eat meat. Until then everyone had thought chimps ate only fruit and nuts. She actually observed chimps as a group hunting a monkey and then eating it. She also discovered how chimps communicate with each other, and her study of their body language helped her work out their social system. For forty years Jane Goodall has been outspoken about making the rest of the world understand and respect the life of these animals. She has argued that wild animals should be left in the wild and not used for entertainment or advertisements. She has helped to set up special places where they can live safely. She is leading a busy life but she says: "Once I stop, it all comes crowding in and I remember the chimps in laboratories. It's terrible. It affects me when I watch the wild chimps. I say to myself, 'Aren't they lucky?" And then I think about small chimps in cages though they have done nothing wrong. Once you have seen that you can never forget ..." She has achieved everything she wanted to do: working with animals in their own environment, gaining a doctor's degree and showing that women can live in the forest as men can. She inspires those who want to cheer the achievements of women. WHY NOT CARRY ON HER GOOD WORK? I enjoyed English, biology, and chemistry at school, but which one should I choose to study at university? I did not know the answer until one evening when I sat down at the computer to do some research on great women of China. By chance I came across an article about a doctor called Lin Qiaozhi, a specialist in women's diseases. She lived from 1901 to 1983. It seemed that she had been very busy in her chosen career, travelling abroad to study as well as writing books and articles. One of them
