It was not until I was 9 years old that I found out my father was ill. It was 1994, but I can remember my mother's words as if it were yesterday: "Kernel, I don't want you to take food from your father, because he has AIDS. Be very careful when you are around him." AIDS wasn't something we talked about in my country when I was growing up. From then on, I knew that this would be a family secret. My parents were not together anymore, and my dad lived alone. For a while, he could take care of himself. But when I was 12, his condition worsened. My father's other children lived far away, so it fell to me to took after him.

We couldn't afford all the necessary medicine for him, and because Dad was unable to work, I had no money for school supplies and often couldn't even buy food for dinner. I would sit in class

feeling completely lost, the teacher's words muffled as I tried to figure out how I was going to manage. I did not share my burden with anyone. I had seen people reacted to AIDS. Kids laughed at classmates who had parents with the disease. And even adults could be cruel. When my father was moved to the hospital, the nurses would leave his food on the bedside even though he was too weak to feed himself.

I had known that he was going to die, but after so many years of keeping his condition a secret, I was completely unprepared when he reached his final days. Sad and hopeless, I called a woman at the nonprofit National AIDS Support. That day, she kept me on the phone for hours. I was so lucky to find someone who cared. She saved my life.

I was 15 when my father died. He took his secret away with him, having never spoken about AIDS to anyone, even me. He didn't want to call attention to AIDS. I do.

B

Perhaps every old generation since ancient times has complained about young people, and today is no different. Isn’t it clear that compared with our glorious selves, kids these days are self-absorbed social network addicts?

However, this summer, my impression of today’s kids has been restored by the story of Rachel Beckwith. She could teach my generation a great deal about maturity and unselfishness —even though she’s just 9 years old, or was when she died on July 23.

At age 5, Rachel had her long hair short off and sent to Locks of Love, which uses hair donations to make artificial hair for children who have lost their own hair because of cancer or other diseases. After that, Rachel announced that she would grow her hair long again and donate it again. And that’s what she did.

Then when she was 8 years old, her church began raising money to build wells in Africa through an organization called charity: water. Rachel was astonished when she learned that other children had no clean water, so she skipped her ninth birthday party. Rachel set up a birthday page on the charity: water website with a target of $300. Instead of presents, she asked her friends to donate $9 each to charity: water. Finally Rachel raised only $220 — which had left her just a bit disappointed.

Then, on July 20, a serious traffic accident left Rachel critically injured. Church members and friends, seeking some way of showing support, began donating on Rachel’s birthday page —https://www.sodocs.net/doc/ec13024060.html,/Rachel — and donations reached her $300 goal, and kept rising.

But Rachel couldn’t hear that she had raised beyond the $47,544 that the singer Justin Bieber had raised for charity: water on his 17th birthday. “I think Rachel would have been overjoyed for she secretly had a crush on (迷恋) him,” Rachel’s mom said.

When it was clear that Rachel would never regain consciousness, the family decided to remove the life support system. Her parents donated her hair for the final time to Locks of Love, and her

organs to other children.

Word abou t Rachel’s last fund-raising spread. Contributions poured in, often in $9 each. The total donations soon topped $100,000, then $300,000.

This is a story not just of one girl, but of a young generation of outstanding problem-solvers working creatively.

24.W hat does the author think of today’s kids after he knew the story of Rachel Beckwith?

A. They can get problems settled effectively.

B. They are unselfish as grown-ups.

C. They are good at social network.

D. They have narrow minds and care about nothing.

25.Why did each of Rachel’s friends donate $9 to charity: water?

A. Because she began to raise money from her ninth birthday.

B. Because she set up her birthday page on June 9th.

C. Because she had asked them to do that.

D. Because she died at the age of 9 and they wanted to honor her.

26.The singer Justin Bieber was mentioned in the text, mainly because ______.

A. Rachel collected more than him who she admired

B. he had donated on Rachel’s page on his 17th birthday

C. Rachel would have been overjoyed for his donation

D. Rachel’s mom said she secretly had a crush on him

27.What does the text mainly talk about?

A. Rachel’s hair donations.

B. A lesson from Rachel.

C. The author’s impression of today’s kids

D. A kind girl, Rachel.

C

Think about the last time you felt afraid. Was it a fear of height? Did you oversleep on a weekday and fear you’d get into trouble at the office? In any case, you know what it feels like to feel fear.

But one woman doesn’t the woman, code-named “UM”, gave her first-ever interview after years of being studied by a team of researchers. The woman is given a code name because the researchers want to protect her from anyone who would take advantage of her inability to feel afraid.

UM can’t tell you what fear is because she’s never experienced it. “I wonder what it’s like to actually be afraid of something,” she said. The formal name for the disease is Urbach-Wieth disease, which is characterized by a hoarse(粗哑的)voice, small bumps around the eyes, and calcium deposits(钙沉积的)in the brain.

In the case of UM,the disease has transformed the part of her brain that controls the human response to fear. In the interview, UM talks about an event in her life where she was held at knifepoint and gunpoint, “I was walk ing to the store, and I saw a man on a park bench. He said. “Come here, please,” so I went over to him. He grabbed me by the shirt, put a knife to my throat and told me he was going to cut me. I told him, “Go ahead and cut me,” I wasn’t afraid at all. And for some reason,he let me go.”

Doctors who have been studying UM’s condition for years have been trying different things that could strike fear into her. They finally figured something out—increasing UM’s carbon dioxide levels.Extra carbon dioxide concentration in the blood is known to cause fear and panic in health individuals. C. stop the brain from responding quickly

D. stop the brain from functioning normally

31.What will probably happen to UM from the last paragraph?

A. Dying of the Urbach-Wieth disease

B. Experiencing another danger

“Heaven is where the police are English, the cooks are French the mechanics are German, the lovers are Italian and everything is organized by the Swiss.Hell is where the.police are German, the cooks are English, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss, and everything is organized by the Italians.”

Obviously the national stereotypes(模式化的思想)in this, old joke are generalizations, but such stereotypes are often said to "exist for a reason".Is there actually a sliver of truth in them? Not likely,an international research team now says.

"National and cultural stereotypes do play an important role in how people see themselves and others, and being aware that these are not dependable is a useful thing,"said study author Robert McCrae of the National Institute on Aging."These are in fact unfounded stereotypes. They don't come from looking around you,"McCrae said.

If national stereotypes aren't rooted in real experiences, then where do they come from? One possibility is that they reflect national values, which may become known from historical events. For example, many historians have argued that the spirit of American individualism has its origins in the experiences of the pioneers on the Old West.

Social scientists such as psychologist Richard Robins have given several other possible explanations for stereotypes and why they may be incorrect.Robins notes that some stereotypes may have been correct at one point in history and then remained unchanged while the culture changed.

We may be "hard-wired",to some degree,to keep incorrect stereotypes, since we are less likely to notice and remember information that is different from our stereotypes.Generally, according to Robins, when we meet people who are different from our stereotypes,we see them as unique individuals rather than typical national or cultural groups.

32.What is the function of the first paragraph?

A. To make a comparison between the characters of different countries.

B. To introduce the topic of national stereotypes.

C.To exemplify the argument against stereotyping.

D.To analyze the strengths and weaknesses of people in different countries.

33.Which of the following best describes McCrae's attitude towards national stereotypes?

A. Critical.

B.Indifferent.

C. Supportive.

D.Uncertain.

34.According to social scientists, why aren’t national stereotypes always correct?

A.Because they are formed by individual historians.

B.Because people tend to have false idea about other cultures

C. Because what was true in the past may not be true at present.

D. Because generalizations are made through personal experience.

35.What does the underlined word "hard-wired" in the last paragraph probably mean?

A.Forgetful.

B. Anxious.

C. Helpless.

D. Fixed.

写作

Film or book, which do you prefer ?

Last week our class held a discussion about the two art and cultural expression forms. Nowadays, many literary works have been adapted into a movie, Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. Besides, the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow. Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they can get more detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the language in the book is possibly more lively and beautiful.

Personally, I agree with the second view. Actually I have more reasons for it. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a situation of my own, and whats more, I am able to better understand the authors ideas. In a word, to read the original work is better than to see the film based on it.

Edwarda’s father, Joe O’Bara, and Kaye took care of their daughter—reading to her, playing her music, making sure she was turned every two hours, bathed, given insulin(胰岛素)and given nourishment through a feeding tube—until their deaths in 1976 and 2008, respectively. After that, Edwarda’s sister Colleen O’Bara took over. Her family’s unending care for her became a story told across the world. And visitors from across the world traveled to the Miami Gardens home every year, sometimes appearing at the doorstep on random days, other times for Edwarda’s yearly birthday party, a cheerful affair with decorations, balloons and cake. Through it all, Edwarda remained in a coma. But to her family and followers she remained alive. Colleen O’Bara described her as “the best sister in the whole wide world.” “She taught me so much, especially after she was in the coma, ” Colleen O’Bara said, “She taught me so much about unconditional love that I couldn’t say I had it before. She taught me about patience that I didn’t have before. I learned so much from taking care of my sister. It’s like I grew up overnight. ” In an announcement of Edwarda’s death posted Thursday on a website, Colleen O’Bara wrote: “Yesterday while taking care of Edwarda I noticed her looking directly a t me and gave me the biggest smile I had ever seen. She then closed her eyes and joined my Mom in Heaven. ” 1. How old was Edwarda O’Bara when she died? A. 56. B. 57. C. 58. D. 59. 2.
