ACT英语26分到36分之精读训练方法Rhetorical skills(我们习惯称之为阅读题)相比Usage/Mechanics(我们习惯称之为语法题)是ACT English中较难的部分,它决定了我们的English 成绩能否从优秀变为卓越。这种能力训练不同于技巧掌握,进阶之路绝不轻松。所以指望“轻松搞定”或“快速提升”的读者,恐怕要对本文失望了。接下来就为大家分享一些精读的训练方案,感兴趣并且有毅力的同学,可以自我练习。

很多同学Rhetorical skills题目错误的原因就是做题的时候根本没有看文章,事实证明不看文章阅读题错误率是非常高的。对阅读题型分类本身没有太大的意义,因为所有的这些题目本质上就是考察大家是否读懂了文章和获取了有效信息。所以提高Rhetorical skills正确率的唯一方法就是精读文章。

【读不懂读的慢的原因】

首先,句子看不懂(障碍就是单词和语法结构,所以句子翻译任务就是解决这个层面的问题)

e.g. Opponents of assisted migration cite as two deterrents the cost and the likelihood that human interference could turn a species into an invasive pest.

上面句子是一道ACT语法真题,很多同学并没有读懂句子导致做错题。这个句子造成大家理解的难点就是宾语后置的一个语法结构。主干部分的正常语序应该是:

Opponents of assisted migration cite the cost and the likelihood as two deterrents.

名词”likelihood”后面接了一个同位语从句解释这个可能性是什么。原句的翻译如下:

反对人类辅助动物迁徙项目的人指出了两个缺点:一个是高昂的费用,一个是人类对迁徙的干预可能使物种变成外来入侵的害虫。

其次,理不清句子之间的关联,段间的关联。

【如何解决问题?】

首先,对长难句进行结构划分和翻译

划分句子结构是一种高效的训练手段。虽然很多同学会很排斥这种枯燥的练习,但是只有通过划分句子结构才能梳理清楚存在问题的语法结构,从而最终实现理解句子的目的。例如,造成大家理解困难的语法结构可能有:较长的后置定语,倒装,嵌套从句,状语从句省略,比较句...... 翻译句子是检验大家能否理解句子的最好方法。

其次,梳理句子之间的逻辑关联,段与段之间的逻辑关联。

尝试阅读的时候做出预测,验证预测,修正预测。

已知S1,S2两个句子,S1和S2之间的逻辑关联只可能从两方面展开:S2 support S1 (what, why, how);

S2 和S1共同support前一句,两句话之间是并列,递进,转折的关系。

举个例子

已知S1:

Lily invented a drug that can help people keep fit without dieting.

接下来我们来预测作者可能写什么。

按照第一个方向,S2解释说明S1,那么有以下三种可能:

what is the drug?

why did Lily invent the drug?

How did Lily invent the drug?

如果S2并没有进一步解释S1,那么有以下三种可能:

This drug can also keep people from getting old. (并列)

More importantly, This drug can keep people happy. (递进)

However, the drug turned out to be useless. (转折)

为什么要做逻辑预测?

这样阅读是一个Active reading的过程。带着问题去阅读更容易获取有效信息,把握文章的段内结构和全篇结构。

更容易理清楚句间的逻辑关系,理解每个句子的功能,进而更准确迅速概括出段落大意。(这些问题正是rhetorical skills题目所考察的)

枯燥的练习正式开始:我们以2016年4月73E的English Passage 1为例: The Min: A Ship from the Desert

In 2004, a team of archaeologists discovered the remains of an ancient shipyard. In a series of caves at a site named Wadi Gawasis in the

Egypt’s desert. The team found a wealth of well-preserved planks, anchors, oars, and other sailing equipment. [A] These objects were determined to be approximately four thousand years old.

We have long known that ancient Egyptians sailed the freshwater Nile River. However, until Wadi Gawasis was excavated, there had been little evidence that we had also sailed the ocean. [B] Hieroglyphic inscriptions suggested that some of the excavated objects had been used in an expedition to the ancient Red Sea port of Punt, about one thousand miles from Wadi Gawasis. Planks pocked with holes bored by shipworms, creatures that live only in salt water, supported the hypothesis that ancient Egyptians has ventured into the ocean.

Florida State University professor Cheryl Ward, a maritime archaeologist, drew up plans for building a ship like those the ancient Egyptians had sailed. The completed ship, sixty-six feet long and sixteen feet wide, would be named Min of the Desert in honor of the Egyptian god who’s likeness adorned many Wadi Gawasis artifacts.

Four shipbuilders constructed the Min by using many of the same tools, materials, and techniques, that the shipbuilders of Wadi Gawasis

had used. [C] Like the ancient Egyptians, the modern builders used mortise-and-tenon joints, when the end of one plank is fitted into a slot in the adjoining plank. Ward compared building the Min to putting together a jigsaw puzzle because the two processes are analogous.

In December 2008, an international crew of twenty-four people made a weeklong ocean voyage in the Min to test: the shipJs seaworthiness. [D] During the voyage, the Min was able to sail roughly seven miles per hour. about twice as fast as Ward has expected. Though it was not always smooth sailing, Ward recalls almost colliding with a reef the Min was found to be more than adequate for a voyage to Punt.

1.Can We Know the Universe? - Reflections on a Grain of Salt Carl Sagan Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge. Its goal is to find out how the world works, to seek what regularities there may be, to penetrate to the connections of things - from sub-nuclear particles, which may be the constituents of all matter, to living organisms, the human social community, and thence to the cosmos as a whole. Our intuition is by no means an infallible guide. Our perceptions may be distorted by training and prejudice or merely because of the limitations of our sense organs, which, of course, perceive directly but a small fraction of the phenomena of the world. Even so straightforward a question as whether in the absence of friction a pound of lead falls faster than a grain of fluff was answered incorrectly by Aristotle and almost everyone else before the time of Galileo. Science is based on experiment, on a willingness to challenge old dogma, on an openness to see the universe as it really is. Accordingly, science sometimes requires courage-at the very least, the courage to question the conventional wisdom. But to what extent can we really know the universe around us? Sometimes this question is posed by people who hope the answer will be in the negative, who are fearful of a universe in which everything might one day be known. And sometimes we hear pronouncements from scientists who confidently state that everything worth knowing will soon be known - or even is already known. Let us approach a much more modest question: not whether we can know the universe or the Milky Way Galaxy or a star or a world. Can we know ultimately and in detail, a grain of salt? Consider one microgram of table salt, a speck just barely large enough for someone with keen eyesight to make out without a microscope. In that grain of salt there are about 1016 sodium and chlorine atoms. This is a 1 followed by 16 zeros, 10 million billion atoms. If we wish to know a grain of salt, we must know at least the three-dimensional positions of each of these atoms. (In fact, there is much more to be known - for example, the nature of the forces between the atoms - but we are making only a modest calculation.) Now, is this number more or less than the number of things which the brain can know? How much can the brain know? There are perhaps 1011 neurons in the brain, the circuit elements and switches that are responsible in their electrical and chemical activity for the functioning of our minds. A typical brain neuron has perhaps a thousand little wires, called dendrites, which connect it with its fellows. If, as seems likely, every bit of information in the brain corresponds to one of these connections, the total number of things knowable by the brain is no more than 1014, one hundred trillion. But this number is only one percent of the number of atoms in our speck of salt.
