22.Soldiers returning home from World War II were usually eager to go on with their lives. For most, that meant starting a family. Between 1946 and 1960, 63 million babies were born in the United States, up 22 million from the fifteen-year period before that. this big jump in the birth rate came to be known as the baby boom (婴儿潮). Before the war, American children were raised very strictly. They were often told to be "seen and not heard." After the war, however, young parents raised their children according to different ideas. Dr. Benjamin Spock's Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care, published in 1946, emphasized flexibility (灵活性) in raising children. Spock encouraged parents to listen to their children and respond to their wishes. New parents quickly made Dr. Spock's book the best-selling book in US history. By 1952, sales had reached 4 million copies per year for the next eighteen years. Critics (批评家) who believed that the old ways of raising children were best accused Spock of being too permissive. They thought his ideas would spoil children. But Spock opposed strict discipline because he thought there were was "no such thing as a bad boy." 22.Some couples choose not to learn the sex of their baby before he or she is born because the moment people hear "boy" or "girl" they begin to make assumptions (设想) about a child. One couple in Sweden decided to take that logic a few steps further, and are refusing to tell anyone whether their child is a boy or a girl. The child – called Pop, to protect his or her identity –is now two years old, and only a few close relatives know the sex. “We want Pop to grow up more freely,” Pop’s mother said. Pop wears dresses, and also “male” styled pants and Pop’s hairstyle changes often. Nordenstrom, who studies hormonal (荷尔蒙) influences on gender, says, “It will affect the child, but it’s hard to say if it will hurt the development. I don’t know what they are trying to achieve. It’s going to make the child different.” She says if Pop is still “genderless(无性的)” by the time he or she starts school, Pop will certainly receive a lot of attention from classmates. “We don’t know exactly what determines sexual identity, but it’s not only sexual education,” says Nordenstrom. “Gender-typical behavior, sexual preferences and sexual identity usually go together. There are hormonal and other influences that we don’t know that will determine the gender of the child.” Pop will soon welcome a brother, or a sister. Pop’s parents will not reveal the sex of that child, either, except, perhaps, to Pop.

C 1. What did the couple in Sweden do to their child?

B. They didn't want anyone to know the sex of their baby before it was born.

C. They are refusing to tell the sex of their child.

B. The parents want this name to bring the child good luck.

C. It is a very

meaningful name. D. The name makes it hard for others to tell the sex of the baby.

A 3. What can we learn from what Nordenstrom said?

A. It's hard to tell whether the influence on the child will be good or bad.

B. The child will become abnormal (反常的).

C. The child is neither a boy nor a girl because it is "genderless."

D. Hormonal influence will determine the gender of the child.

D 4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

22.Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools everyday by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free tim e digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets,

dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.

B 1. Which of the following statements is NOT true? ___________

A. People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.

B. People who work in London prefer to live in the country.

22.I teach economics at Harvard (哈佛大学) three times per week. Last Monday, at the beginning of class, I cheerfully asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been so good. He had his wisdom teeth (智齿) removed. The young man then asked me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. His question reminded me of something I’d read somewhere before: “Every morning when you get up, you have a choice abo ut how you want to approach life that day,” I said. “I choose to be cheerful.”“Let me give you an example,” I continued. “In addition to teaching here, I also teach out at the community college, 17 miles down the freeway from where I live. A few weeks ago I drove 17 miles to that college. I left the freeway and turned onto College Drive. I only had to drive another quarter mile down the road to the college. But just then my car died. I tried to start it again, but the engine wouldn’t turn over. So I put my flashers (闪光灯) on, grabbed my books, and ran to the college.”“As soon as I got there I arranged for a tow truck (拖车) to meet me at my car after class. The secretary in the office asked me what has happened. ‘This is my lucky day,’I replied, smiling.”“Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day?”She was puzzled. “What do you mean?” “I live 17 miles from here,” I replied. “My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn’t. Instead, it broke down in the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance of here. I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class. If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn’t have been arranged in a more convenient way.”“The secretary’s ey es opened wide, and then she smiled. I smiled back and headed for class.”I scanned the sixty faces in my economics class. Despite the early hour, no one seemed to be asleep. Somehow, my story had touched them. Or maybe it wasn’t the story at all. In fact, it had all started with a student’s observation that I was cheerful.

Some people think parents are the best teachers. Though I see some reasons in it, I cannot totally agree.

We all know that parents are the first teachers for their kids. And they really can teach their kids a lot. But, we have to admit that not all parents are good teachers. Maybe some parents themselves have serious problems. Just as, some criminal or immoral problems. Those parents are supposed not to have any kids, cause they are not qualified to have. Themselves have already become the burden of the society. It is hard to image that what a bad effect will they bring onto their kids.

On the other hand, some parents cannot find the right way to teach kids tell rights from wrongs, though they mean to be nice to kids. Their intentions are good, but things come out to be different. For which we can not blame the parents.

Besides, parents are not the only best teachers for kids. Teachers in school have a great effect on students too. Teachers teach. Not only knowledge from text books, but also skills from the reality. Teachers provide a large range of

My father was not a sentimental man .I don’t remember him ever oohing or aahing over something I made as a child .Don’t get me wrong. I knew that my Dad loved me, but getting all mushy—eyed was not his thing .I learned that he showed me he loved me in other ways . There was one particular moment when this became real to me… I have a box in my home that I call the“Dad box ”. In it are so many things that remind me of my Dad. I pull that picture out every once in a while and remember.I remembera promise that was made many years ago between a young man and his bride on their wedding day. And I remember the unspoken promise that was made between a father and his daughter. . . 。。 2、the traditional place of the farm woman 第二段: However, the law that all property belonged to the husband, including property that had belonged to the wife before her marriage ,left women with no independent social status. If a woman left her husband or was driven away by him. She could take nothing with her but the clothes on her back, however much she had brought to the marriage. If she earned money outside the home, her husband could collect her pay .This law was changed in many nations in the late nineteenth century ,but there was no serious change in attitudes toward women’s place in society until the Second World War. After World War I there was a general rebellion of youth against “old fashioned” ideas ,particularly patriarchal family relationships .The Depression further broke up and displaced families, even in socially stable rural areas. The workload in
