1 Introduction

“Low -carbon Economy” means people can get more products by expending less natural resources and making less pollution. The development of “Low -carbon Economy” creates the chances for the research and development on low-carbon production technology and eco-design and manufacture of low-carbon products. The design and manufacture of products create a modern living environment for human beings, but meanwhile, some wrong actions, such as unreasonable designs, unsuitable material chosen and over packaging, can consume more energies and resources and cause a series of of environment consciousness, human beings pay more attention to the life quality and place prime emphasis on their safety, health, environmental protection and energy conservation. This paper discusses some thoughts on eco-design of packing of products and gives some ideas about it by analyzing the present situation and developing trend of domestic and foreign research on the packing of products.

2 Understanding of the Eco-design Idea on the

Packing of Products Eco-design of packing of products means people must merge environment factors into product design; it can improve the performance of environment of products in their all lifecycles, reduce the environmental influence and prevent pollution at the source [1]. Eco-design is also called green design, environmental design, and product design at all lifecycle, and so on. The basic idea is to take environmental factors and measures of preventing pollution into the designs, take the improvement of environmental performance as the aim and the starting point and try our best to reduce the effect of packing of products on environment. It reflects a rethinking on the damages to environment and ecology which are caused by the developing of

Abstract : The concept of the eco-design of packing of products in Low-carbon Economy is given. We analyze the research situation of eco-design at present, and then discuss thoughts and methods of eco-design, which include packaging modularization, dematerialization, energy-saving and bio-simulation.

modern science. At the same time, it also shows the moralities and social responsibilities of the designers.

3 The Present Situation of Research on the

Domestic and Foreign Eco-design of Packing

of Products

There are four stages in the development of eco-design in western developed countries. The first stage is “the Improvement of Product” in the last 90s century which refers to improve the performance of product to protect the environment. The second stage is “the Redesign of Product” in 2000. People renewed the parts and used the noon-toxic materials in this stage. The third stage is “the Innovation of the Concept and Function of Product” in 2010. In 2030, it will come to “the Innovation of System”. The western developed countries are going into the third stage in eco-design field. Pursuing Eco-design is a consensus accepted by the governments, enterprises, businesses and all the people. International organizations, colleges and research institutes participate actively in the exploration of the theories and practices about eco-design and UNEP will transfer the attention to environment issues to solve the basic problem(the product itself)of environmental pollution gradually . This organization points out that people should look for the balance between the ecology and economy and pay more attention to the issues of environment during the product development process[2]. Colleges and research departments have developed a series of ecological design tools, methods and resources. Western Europe has the most advanced technology about it, such as Delft University in the Netherland has a high reputation on the study of the eco-design. The Environment and Sustainable Development Research Centre which are specialists in British University of Surrey are doing a research on advanced and dynamic industrial ecological design. Besides, some study institutes, such as Cannon Corporation, Toshiba Corporation, Hitachi Corporation, Fuji Corporation and Sony Corporation from Japan , German Siemens, AEG and BASF , is also paying attention to the ecological efficiency and environmental efficiency in product technology development. The products they made not only have the ecological efficiency, but also have the environmental efficiency. They do it for keeping their market in the future. However, our country is still in the first stage (a transition stage from traditional design to ecological design) and different districts have different stages, for example, some eastern coastal areas of our country have been in the second stage, but few western areas still cannot reach the standard of the first stage.

4 Some Thoughts on Eco-design of Packing of

Products

With the development of times, while product packaging designs satisfy the basic functions, the environmental awareness of people about it are of strategic importance and people emphasize protection of natural ecology and the full use of resources in the product packing[3]. This is the important study for current product packing designers and the developing direction of packaging designs in the low-carbon economy. The designing ideas emphasizing the balance between ecology and economy are as follows:

4.1 Design of Reusing Modularization Structure

The packing of products can lose their functions gradually after transportation and use of the products and most of them will become wastes. So if people don’t recycle, use, reusing them, they will be the major pollution sources. After a serious of considerations, I give some advices about them, for example, people can put products into the crates. After those crates are transported to destination by trucks, people can change crates into the floors of trucks. Another example, people should make a unified module plan on the dimension and size of the packing of the large home appliance. The packing of

products can be convertible into the simple furniture or packing other products. This reusing structural design can’t waste the limited resources at least and show their use value by the greatest extent and avoid the pollution which is caused by dealing with the packing.

4.2 Using Fewer Materials to Design the

Perfect Packing

People know that the products will be useful, convenient and competitive with good packing designs; meanwhile, people must recognize that they must cut down on the amount of packing materials, reduce cost and avoid waste [4].There are some ways to practice it: people can compress the volumes of the packed products, simplify the structures of packing and reduce unnecessary waste in packing design process .This action is to achieve the best packing efficiency and reduce the pollution and wastes of the packing of products after the products are consumed. Nowadays, many people pursue the luxurious packing of products; this idea causes a great wasteful use of packing. Such as the packing of some moon cakes, the packing volumes get bigger and bigger and are added some irrelevant products in the packages. The design isn’t in accord with the request that people should reduce the packing materials. The packing of products should be economic and economical and the styles should be brief and practical. The light, thin, short and small design style has become a main direction and can

4.3 Power Saving Designs with Natural

Materials

The major natural materials of packing are wheat-straws, twigs of the chaste tree, reeds, willow twigs and bamboo woods and so on which are not important in people’s mind, but people still use them nowadays, because they are environment protection materials.People can give these materials their own glamour and make the best use of them in packing by designing, developing and utilizing. Using appropriate materials meets the requirements of environmental protection and can reduce the consuming of irreproducible and the consumption of highly energy consuming to save our resources and reduce the pollution. For example, Zongzi packing (traditional Chinese rice-pudding) is an excellent traditional packaging design. Reed leaves (Zongzi packaging material) decompose and disappear quickly in nature after using. Another example, bamboo wood’s price is low and it can renewable .This is a nonpoisonous, odorless object which can be degraded completely and has good buffer role and aeration capability.

4.4 The extension and development of thoughts

on bionic design

The Application of biological principles and the study of value of packaging used natural materials can extend and develop the ideas about eco-design of packing of products. Along with the ideas of environmental protection propagating, requests to product design people need are vastly different from the past. Now people purse both good qualities and shapes of products. But meanwhile, they also focus on ecologic environmental protection of products. The designers promoting bionic design can create products which have complete functions, ingenuous structures and reasonable material application and at the same time they can endow products with life. Then designers can explore the new way and values of "ecological packaging"[5]. Let design return to nature.

5 Summary

In conclusion, designers put the ideas of eco-design into practice today. To a certain degree, these actions can reduce the influence on living environment of mankind. But we must recognize that we can’t solv e the problems of environmental

pollution and realize the eco-design, if we only depend on designing. So we also depend on the perfect related laws and rules, strengthen the training of environmental awareness of designers and enlarge the knowledge about the idea of low-carbon packaging for the main consumers.
