INTRODUCTION

A. A Brief Introduction to Katherine Mansfield and Her Short Stories

Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) was one of the modern British short story writers. Her short stories play a vital importance role on the world short stories stage. Besides, she was a prolific writer. During her 34-year lifetime, she altogether completed 93 stories, which contributes a great more to the world literary, no matter the style of her short stories or the themes which express in her works. Even though she never declared that she was a feminist, the female protagonists are the soul in most of her works. This thesis will mainly focus on exploring the psyche of these women and the formation of their psyche from the perspective of psychoanalytic feminism.

Katherine Mansfield originally named Kathleen Mansfield Beauchant, she was born in Wellington, New Zealand, 1888, the third daughter of a middle-class colonial family, and she altogether had two elder sisters, a younger sister and a younger brother. Her father, Harold Beauchant, was “a successful merchant and banker”(Li 223). Her mother, Burnell Dyer, was a well-educated, typically traditional Victoria woman who influenced her a lot more on her soul even though she seldom took care of her children as a mother should do, she impressed her children deep in their heart from what she did in her daily life. Childhood played an important role on Katherine Mansfield?s writing career. Mansfield was born in a middle-class family, because of lacking the bounds of her parents, she spent her childhood freely, so she got a good opportunity to get in touch with the people who came from different stratum, which also paved the way to her later
