As I grew older, my dad and 1 grew further apart. We always had totally different opinions. He thought that college was a waste of time, but for me it was important to finish college. A few months ago, I heard that my 84-year-old dad was in poor health. When he called and asked whether I could move from Colorado bank to Tennessee to help him,I knew he was seriously ill. I am his only child and so it was time to meet my father's requirement.

Two weeks after moving back,we bought a boat and started fishing again. Fishing was one of the few things that we did while 1 was young and that we both enjoyed. It is strange but true that as we are fishing we are able to put things that have kept us apart for so many years behind us. We are able to talk about things that we have never talked about before. Fishing has heen healing the old wounds that have kept us apart.

It is not important how many fish we catch. It is about enjoying the relationship that we have not had for years. I' m 62 and he is 84. When we are on the lake fishing, it is like enjoying life. People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.

Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.

"We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions," Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth."

According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.

The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of. expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.

It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. "The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack said. "Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes

more and mouth less."

In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

Would you want a doctor who got high marks in medical school just for trying hard?

Apparently many college students would have no problem with that. They believe students are owed a good grade simply because they put a lot of effort into a class.

The researchers asked over 800 undergraduates if they agreed or disagreed with some statements. For example:“If I have completed most of the reading for a class,I deserve a B in that course.”“A professor should not be annoyed with me if I receive an important cal l during class.”

Just 16% thought it was OK to take that phone call. But 66% agreed that a professor should

consider effort and not just the quality of a student's work when deciding grades. And 40%

thought they should get a B,the second highest mark, just because they did most of the reading for class.

Some experts aren't surprised that students often see no difference between effort and results.Social critics like to say that in children's activities these days, everyone gets an award just for trying,so no one will feel rejected.

Yet competition to get into the best colleges is fiercer than ever.Students may worry that low grades will keep them out of graduate school or a good job.

And there may be another explanation: pressure from parents to get a good return on the family's investment. These days, college can cost more than a house.

A former teaching assistant recently wrote to The New York Times about his experience

with grade expectations. He would try to explain it this way when students asked for a top grade just for studying hard in chemistry class.

What if a baseball player came to spring training and worked harder than all the others, but still could not play well? Would the team accept him anyway, just because he tried so hard?

The students would say no.But most of them would still ask for an A.

A Part A Reading Aloud The modern city is a new kind of nature, man-made nature. It reflects back an image of ourselves through the things we have designed. But for the designer, the world is not enough. Plans for a new, improved version are always on the drawing board. At the Home Exhibition in London, people come and go, dreaming about new labor-saving devices, new possibilities, new designs for living. Not everything here is a design classic, but everything here has been designed to meet a need, fulfill a desire, or simply to raise a cheer at the breakfast table. What was it like growing up in a big family?/ How did you like growing up in a big family?/ What was growing up in a big family like? Answer 1: I love having such a big family. There were many sweet memories about those years growing up with my brothers and sisters. We played games together and went to school together and it was our family tradition to give everybody a surprise on his or her birthday. But at times, it could be a little crowded as we all live together in a small house when we were young. What was the most difficult part?/ What was the hardest part?/ What was the toughest part?/ What was the most difficult thing?/ What was the hardest thing?/ What was the toughest thing? Answer 2: I think it was that we didn’t have enough money to make sure that everybody ate well and dressed well. My elder brothers and sisters had a little tougher life than we did, because they had to work a lot to help with the family income. Are younger children luckier than the elder children?/ Are younger children more fortunate than the elder children? Answer 3: Yes. I think for the most part, the younger ones are luckier, because they have more people to look up to and tell them right from wrong, which is a great help. As for the elder children, they have to help support the family and look after the younger ones. So usually, they have more responsibilities.

(1)After an hour or so we began to feel very frightening. (frightening 改为frightened,因它表示某人感到害怕,而不是令人害怕)(全国卷) (2)Charles said,“As soon as I see a realy tall building,I want to climb it. (realy 改为really 或real,若改为really,则修饰tall;若改为real,则修饰building)(全国卷)(3)Last Sunday, police cars hurry to the taller building in New York. (taller 改为tallest,因从含义上看此处应是最高级)(全国卷) (4)As a result, people in the modern world generally live much more longer than people in the past. (去掉more,因为longer 本身已是比较级,不能再受more 修饰)(全国卷)(5)Therefore,there are still some countries where people have shorter lives. (Therefore 改为However,因此处语意转折)(全国卷) (6)People in industrial countries can expect to live for twice so long as people who lived a few hundred years ago. (so long as 改为as long as,其意为“与……一样长”)(全国卷)(7)In some places you may borrow many books as you want. (many 之前加as,因 as …… as 结构不完整)(全国卷) (8)I told Mother,Father,Sister and all my friends here that a great time I had. (that 改为what)(全国卷) (9)I never knew a ride down a river could be so much exciting. (去掉much,因much 不能用来修饰形容词的原级,尽管它可用来修饰比较级和最高级)(全国卷)(10)I‘m sure we’ll have a wonderfully time together. (wonderfully 改为wonderful,因它是放在名词前作定语)(全国卷)

We often think of themselves as the centre of their family. As for the program, eight “dos” have worked out for the students to follow. For an example, we are advised to remember our parents’ birthdays. Beside this, it is necessary that we should also tell our parents what we are going to do when we go out.

(1) We stopped to rest for a while and to drink some waters from a stream. 1. Three friends and I was driving on a highway. While we were going at least 50 miles per hour, we passed over a car. It had broken down, stopped on the side of the road. My friend slows down, and pulled behind the other car. He got out of the car immediate and before I knew it he was helping the other person push the car down the road to a spot where wasn’t so close to the passing cars. From the way they were pushing the car, it looked as if my friend was pushing them all by himself. I thought my friend help a complete stranger like this was a great thing, but I won’t forget his good nature or character. 2. Dear Brad, I’m very glad to hear from you. In your last letter you ask about the post-80s in China. Actually I am the boy who belongs to this group. Comparing with our parents, life for us is getting much hard. The job market is tough and the house is expensively to afford. Now many girls prefer to marry with a man who owns a house and a car. Therefore, I don’t think love built on house and cars is true love, and I doubt how long it will last. As a matter of fact, though situations are tough today, a lot of we post-80s are making great efforts live a good life. I believe we will have a nice future. Li Hua 3. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, Some of us are having problems about our parents, as they often look into our school bags or read our diaries. I fully understand why we are comfortable about it, but it is no need to feel too sadly. Our parents are checking in our bags or diaries to make sure we’re not getting into troubles. They have probably heard of some horrible stories about other kids and thinking we might do the same. Or perhaps they just want to connect with us and are doing it all wrong. My suggestion is: Tell them we want them to trust us as many as we’d like to trust them. If you don’t think you can talk to them, write them a letter and leave it lie around --- they are bound to read it. Thank you!
