Long ago in a small Italian town, a businessman owed a large sum of money to a moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, loved the businessman’s beautiful daughter. He suggested a bargain.

The moneylender told them that he would put a black pebble ( 鹅卵石 ) and a white one into an empty bag. The girl would then have to pick one from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become the moneylender’s wife and her father’s debt would be gone. If she picked the white pebble, she need not marry him and her father’s debt would still be gone. But if she refused to pick, her father would be thrown into jail.

They were standing on a path full of pebbles. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick her pebble from the bag.

What would you have done if you had been the girl? Refuse to take a pebble? Say the moneylender is cheating? Or pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself to save her father?

The girl did none of the above. She put her hand into the bag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she let it fall onto the path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. She said, “I’m sorry I was so careless. But don’t worry. If you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will tell which pebble I picked.” The moneylender dared not admit his dishonesty and had to let them go. The girl found a perfect solution to her problem.

Two men, both seriously ill, lived in the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time lying on his back. He was depressed and just wanted to die as soon as possible.

Every afternoon when the man by the window could sit up, he would describe to his roommates all the wonderful things that he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed started to live for those periods when his world would be brightened by all the activities and colors of the outside world.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers of every color of the rainbow. As the man by the window described all these in detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the beautiful scenes.

One morning the man by the window died peacefully in his sleep. After the body was removed, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. There the man took his first look at the world outside. But it faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse why that man described so wonderful things outside this window while what he saw was just a blank wall. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

People often ask me, “How did you raise two talented artists?”There’s no simple answer to this question. From the beginning, children come to us with different personalities. But we parents are the most important influence in their early life.

One aspect of healthy childhood is having lots of child-centered play throughout the early years. Play is the most important vehicle that children have for coping with(应付) life and making

sense of it. Matt played pretend games for hours every day for many years---making up stories and taking on roles. Not only did all the play help build a strong sense of inner security in Matt, it also built up his ability to imagine and invent new ideas. These years of child-centered play helped Matt become an actor today.

Schools are another big influence in our children’s life. Children spend about half of their waking hours in school and what happens there has a big part to play in the inner confidence and social responsibility that they develop. I sent both my sons Kyle and Matt to a public high school where community participation, respect for differences and learning concern for others were part of their daily school life. The school had an excellent drama program. Matt’s high school drama experiences gave him a rock solid(坚实的)start in the theater. The school’s painting program also helped Kyle shape his future career.

I believe that schools should be places not only for academic learning, but also where young people build confidence and learn to become responsible citizens. It is a pity that today’s schools, driven by standardized tests, have no time for activities that can’t be tested. We should insist that our schools focus on not only academic lessons, but also the all-round child-----so that all our children can become healthy and strong and enter adulthood as responsible and caring citizens.

Every year, we ask Southwest Florida residents to nominate (提名) great moms in our

“She has managed more than a year of operations, recovery and the terrible news that Nick’s cancer was back and had spread,” her friend Amanda Turner wrote in her nomination essay. “She still manages to sign the boys up for soccer and basketball classes and she tries to give them some sense of normalcy (正常状态) of the family.”

Heather knew the pains that cancer brings. She worked with cancer patients as lead nuclear medicine technologist for Lee Memorial Health System. A long list of people backed up her, including some complete strangers. The support from the community brought Nick some relief.

“It gives me great comfort to know that Heather and the boys will always have the support of friends, neighbors and the community. Thank you,” Nick wrote in his blog. In that post, he also wrote about Heather being nominated for Mother of the Year. “I would be honored if she got your votes.”
