The importance of learning basic skills

In the face of various and complicated requirements of employment market, some students begin to question the significance of learning basic knowledge and skills, just as what is exposed in the cartoon above.

However, it is absolutely wrong to hold that idea. Owing to the fact that we are

living in a competitive society, the development of our society demands that we arm

ourselves with basic skills and up-to-date knowledge so as to keep up with the pace of our society. An investigation shows that millions of people spend time and energy

grasping skills and technology so that they can keep a favorable position in job market or enhance their opportunities. While focusing on creativity, innovation, management and leadership skills, we should never forget the fundamental importance of the more basic, essential skills.

It is universally known that opportunity is important,

but you could do nothing with it if you are not equipped with competitive forces, such basic reading and calculating skills, to seize it.

Which Is More Important

As can be seen from the picture above, there is a conversation between a son and a father. The father told his son that it is more important to empty the dustbin than to worry about disposing of nuclear waste, that is to say, small things go first when dealing with big things. I’m definitely on the father’s side in this and I’m sure I’m not alone.

A case in point is the successful launch of ShenZhou

10 spacecraft, which excites everyone and makes every feel proud of China. Behind this great event there are a host of detailed things, called petty things, conducted by millions of scientists, who have devoted themselves to the mission. It is the petty things that contribute to the success, which reminds us of the significance of small things. We also take

ourselves for example. It is acknowledged that before running we must learn to stand and walk building up a solid foundation for running. Although walking is considered as a trifle while running is treated as a great thing, walking is the first step.

As an old saying, One can’t Make a By Success without Bing Self reliant. So we should keep it in our mind that before accomplishing important tasks, perform small tasks. Only in this way can we make the highest eminence.

The Importance of the Basic Learning Skills

As what is vividly shown in the picture, many college students have the same doubt as the one in the picture that is whether that stuff will be outdated when they graduated and began to work. That stuff, as we can see from the picture, refers to the basic learning skills such as mathematics we learned when we were in primary school. It also reveals a phenomenon in the college that there are a great

number of students, who question the practicability of their subjects because they are too simple to be helpful with their occupation afterwards.

Does that mean these subjects are useless? Definitely not. These subjects are like the foundation of a building. Though they are commonplace even invisible, they are of vital importance. Mastering these basic skills we can grasp the fundamental elements of learning ability. As an old saying goes like this, high buildings rise from the ground. Only if we lay a solid foundation, we can’t set up a high building. Or in another word, do you think it is feasible to let a person learn English without learning a, b, c?

With all was said above, we can draw a conclusion that the basic learning skills are quite essential to both our whole study and the work we will take after graduation. Thus we should pay more attention to the basic subjects and master the ability required at the further career.

Nowadays, going abroad for studies is enjoying a striking popularity among adolescents. Importance should be attached to studying abroad.

There are a great many advantages of studying overseas. First and foremost, living and studying abroad offers students a different perspective of the world. On a university campus, international students are likely

to encounter their counterparts from various countries and areas and are exposed to diverse ideas and values. What is more, overseas experience is the best opportunity for the real-life use of foreign languages. Generally peaking, it is my view that although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful,

the payoff is worthwhile. In the first place, in addition to knowledge, overseas students can gain

precious experiences that those who stay at home will never have. Furthermore, overseas experience, frustrating and painful as it may be,

is conducive to the growth of adolescents.

There has been a heated discussion about libraries at the age of information among people. Some people, especially the younger generation, challenge the value of conventional libraries. When they need any information in their studies or work, they can turn to their computers for help. For this reason, they do not need to go to a library for borrowing or returning one or two books.

While others, including most old people as well as scholars, value libraries. They love libraries because they can enjoy peace and quietness in an isolated spiritual world. And they also have access to rare

academic works needed for their studies in the libraries.

In my view, conventional libraries are still available though there is still much room for improving. At the Age of Information, as long as knowledge is respected and cherished, libraries won’t extinct from our lives. On the other hand, libraries should not refuse the latest information technology, which will enable them to regain those young readers.

In recent years the problems which are caused by the inequality of education opportunity have attracted the public's attention. For instance,

the backward teaching facilities

and dilapidated school buildings in rural areas are in sharp contrast to those advanced facilities and

well-equipped classrooms in urban areas, students from poor families cannot go to universities because of the high tuition.

There are several factors which contribute lo these problems. First, the distribution of resources is unbalanced between rural and urban schools. Second, educational loans for poor students are far from enough. Third, the inequality in some schools' admission policies also turns many students away.

The education inequality can result in many bad impacts. On one hand, it can affect people’s future employment. On the other hand，it is the root of many social problems.

To change this situation, I think, we should take the following measures. Firstly, the government's spending on education should be increased and

the allocation of public resources gives priority to rural and weak urban schools. Secondly,

the implementation of the government financial aid system for students should be accelerated. Thirdly, the government should speed up education reforms to ensure everyone has equal access to schools.

Hiring Celebrities as Mating Professors

Via Internet or other means of mass media，it is common to team that some super stars are employed

as guest professors of a university. Whether it is helpful to hire personages for a university's development causes hot debate from the very beginning.

There are two voices: Some people think that stars’ social influence can do good to the enrollment of a university and raise its social degrees of approval. Besides, universities should open to society and take advantage of various social resources, inclusive of celebrities' life experience and struggling adventure. However, others hold the opposite viewpoint. They think that a professor under a star's name is just advertising stunt, and has no practical meaning to the development of the university. It

also diverts students attention from their academic study.

In my view, just as a coin has two sides, the inviting of celebrities as guest professors has both good and bad effect. Thus I think colleges should evaluate the possible results thoroughly, and their choices should be based on the improvement of teaching standards

and students' development. Universities should also take the features of their relevant disciplines into consideration before hiring some celebrity as a visiting professor.

We Shouldn't Totally Turn to the Internet Nowadays, Internet has become

an indispensable part in our life, and we use it for various purposes, such as searching useful information and chatting online. However, now more and more people turn to the Internet for help whenever they have trouble in finding solutions to their problems, and this phenomenon has aroused the public's attention.

Relying on the Internet to solve all our difficulties can have bad impacts on us. On one hand, since we can always settle the troubles by searching solutions

Giving Children Cell Phones

More and more children are showing up at school each September with cell phones. Many parents buy cell phones to their children because it is a nice safety measure. Generation Gap

Though many aspects of our social life have been improved, the generation gap between the youths and the olders remain and even grows wider.

western civilization, the youths do not blindly follow what the elders say, that causes the gap. The young are creative and revolutionary, always go along with the trend and like changing. While the old, accustomed to everything of the past, are hostile to change. Also with more and more different beliefs

Should Food Be Banned on the Subway?

Currently, some cities are considering a food ban on subways, which has sparked heated discussion. Some people say food should be banned because of the trash and rats they attract. And, garbage

from discarded food can cause track fires.

Beyond sanitary and mechanical concerns, food can also cause fights, as was discovered last week by one

passenger who criticized a woman eating steamed stuffed bun on the subway.

However, some others are opposed to the idea. They argue that people like eating in the train in the morning because they don't have enough time to eat at their houses or restaurants. Sometimes that may be the only time or meal a transit rider may be able to eat especially when traveling long distances. Besides, there are people, for example diabetics, who do require food at various times to maintain blood-sugar levels.

Personally, I'm against the ban because of the huge inconvenience it would cause to commuters, and the expense involved in enforcing it. Still, I believe we should have a little common courtesy. I think we all have responsibility to try to treat our subway system and fellow riders with respect, and that extends to food as well.
