Have you ever heard the old saying, "Never judge a book by its cover"? This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence of others . Some people have minds that shine only in certain situations. A young people with an unusual gift in writing may find himself speechless in the presence of a pretty girl when he speaks . He may not be able to find the right words . But don't make mistake of thinking him stupid, with a pen and a paper, he can express himself better than anybody.

Other people may fool you into overestimating (过高估计) their intelligence by putting up a good front. A student who listens attentively and takes notes in class is sure to make a favorable impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may score near the bottom of the class. It all boils down to this: you can't judge someone by appearance. The only way to determine a person's intelligence is to get to know him. Then you can see how he reacts to different situations. The more situation you see, the better your judgment is likely to be. So take your time. Don't judge a book by its cover.

Football is, I believe, the most important game in England: one has only to go to one of the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for one side or the other.

To a stranger, one of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He has pictures of them and knows the results of large numbers of matches. He will tell you who he expects will win such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times his age.

Most schools in England take football seriously – much more seriously than nearly all European’s schools, where lessons are all that are important, and games are left for the children themselves. In England, it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy’s mind with facts in classroom, it also means the training of character by means of games, especially team games, where the boy or girl has to learn to work with others for the team instead of working for himself alone. The school therefore plans games and matches for its pupils. Football is a good team game; it is good for both the body and the mind. That is why it is every school’s game in England.

64.In Paragraph 1, the underlined word ― this‖ means _________ .

A.people often shout at each other in a football match

B.people, rich and poor, young and old , often play football

C.football is the most popular game in England

D.people usually go to the important matches

65.People often ______ one football team or the other by shouting.

A. beat

B. win over

C. support

D. laugh at

66. What does education mean in England?

A. Filling a boy’s mind with facts.

B. Teaching how to work with others for the team.

C. Training character by means of games.

D. More than the teaching of knowledge.

67. From the passage, we learn that ________.

A. Football is popular mostly among English children

B. schools in England make use of football for the training of body and mind

C. football is more important than lessons in England

D. other European schools consider football unimportant

D

When hunting for a job in a weak economy(经济), every detail counts. It’s no longer good enough to be a qualified applicant, so job clubs can be of much help.

What is a Job Club? Job connection clubs are small groups of people across America who meet regularly to talk about job searching and career. These clubs support the success of all members. Looking for work chances is made easier when you’re not alone. Job clubs are rooted in the belief that each member has something valuable to contribute and that everyone will benefit from the advice and encouragement.

Why start or join a job club? Job searching can possibly be a lonely and discouraging process, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Becoming part of a local j ob club can offer valuable help. It may also bring a strong sense of confidence that gets you going in the right direction. When you know that your fellow members expect to hear regularly about your progress, you’re more likely to have a positive attitude towards the club meeting. To support your success, the club will provide practical suggestions, including specific (特定的) discussion topics to get you started and keep you encouraged along the way of overcoming the difficulties in a job hunt.

What are the topics of a job club? While the form of club activities may be the same, the different topics of discussion mean that no two meetings are exactly alike. You’ll deal with a number of matters — where to find proper job directions and how to get your calls returned; preparing for interviews; effectively applying for the right opportunities to satisfy your desire; facing rejections bravely and turning failure into success.

Each member will update the group on his or her progress, and you’ll end each meeting with a suggestion from each member to carry out specific tasks during the week that follows. There’s no shortage of t opics to talk about.

68. The reason to start the job clubs is that they can _______.

A. provide a suitable job for every member

B. meet their needs to get together freely

C. attract many people with various topics

D. offer useful suggestions to job hunters

69. The advantage of job clubs is to make job hunters more _______.

A. confident

B. qualified

C. local

D. valuable

70. Which of the following can be used to replace ―facing rejections‖ in the passage?

A. Defeating difficulties.

B. Achieving success.

C. Accepting failures.

D. Losing face.

71. We can find this passage in the following EXCEPT in _______.

A. a newspaper

B. a magazine

C. a news report

D. a guide book

E

When something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say, ―Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault. ‖ or ―I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault; the car broke down. ‖ It is probably not

your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key t o success.

Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a differ ent person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.

This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on ―whose fault it is. ‖ Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

72. According to the passage, winners______________ .

A. meet with fewer difficulties in their lives

B. deal with problems rather than blame others

C. have responsible and able colleagues

D. blame themselves rather than others

73. The underlined word ―remedy‖ in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _____ .

A. avoid

B. accept

C. improve

D. consider

74. When your colleague brings about a problem, you should ___________. .

A. find a better way to handle the problem

B. blame him for his lack of responsibility

C. tell him to find the cause of the problem

D. ask a more able colleague for help

75. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. A Winner’s Opportunity.

B. A Winner’s Secret.

C. A Winner’s Problem.

D. A Winner’s Achievement.

Dear Xiao Wang,

I have received and read your letter, in which you mentioned that you wanted to lose weight by dieting.

It is only natural that young girls at your age hope to look beautiful. However, in my opinion, health is more important than beauty. For a student, studying is the first thing to consider while appearance is the second. So do not let others' opinions affect your normal life. However, if you do want to lose weight, it is a good idea to do it by getting more exercise and changing unhealthy eating habits. The most important thing is that you keep a healthy state of mind, as it will help with your studies, and will also help you overcome difficulties in dieting.

I hope my advice will be helpful to you and I'm looking forward to your next letter.

Yours,

Li Hua
